Guest guest
I'm not sure if there is a 'should be getting' since everyone is different? -Amie Switching to cytomel from synthroid? Hi Everyone! I was given 50 cytomel yesterday instead of 75 synthroid. I asked to try T3 since synthroid wasn't relieving enough symptoms and some actually came back. Now I read that this is twice what I should be getting? Anyone else gone from synthroid to cytomel? How did you feel during the first few weeks, etc? Thanks,
Guest guest
Amie's right, the amount of medication depends on the individual not a handbook > I'm not sure if there is a 'should be getting' since everyone is different? > -Amie > > > Switching to cytomel from synthroid? > > > > > > Hi Everyone! > > I was given 50 cytomel yesterday instead of 75 synthroid. Guest guest
What I'm referring to is that 50 cytomel is equal to 200 synthroid. I was on 75 synthroid so then that would mean I would be getting over double what I should be getting sending me into hypo. > > I'm not sure if there is a 'should be getting' since everyone is > different? > > -Amie > > > > > > Switching to cytomel from synthroid? > > > > > > > > > > > > Hi Everyone! > > > > I was given 50 cytomel yesterday instead of 75 synthroid. Guest guest
Hi, I had my thyroid removed and I take a combination of both synthroid and cytomel. Your body needs both T3 and T4. Cytomel is T3 and synthroid is T4. I feel good. > I'm not sure if there is a 'should be getting' since everyone is different? > -Amie > > > Switching to cytomel from synthroid? > > > > > > Hi Everyone! > > I was given 50 cytomel yesterday instead of 75 synthroid. Guest guest
I take 25 cytomel and 50 of synthroid. That was to replace 88 synthroid only. I recommend cutting the cytomel in half and starting there. Take it for at least one week. If you feel ok and aren't experiencing hyper symtpoms or headache, increase so you are taking 3/4 dose. After another week you can go with the full dose. It may take 3-4 days for you to feel overmedicated, if that every occurs. For me, I could chest tightness when on too much cytomel. The headache was there initially as the excess T4 worked it's way out. Since this med is based on current throid output and weight, I will add my stats - have lots of antibodies, female, weight 145 to 150. Hope that helps. Guest guest
Hi Sherry! I'm confused. I was told 25 cytomel was = to 100 synthroid. So 25 synthroid and 50 cytomel would = 150 synthroid. That cytomel is 4xs as strong as synthroid. Do you see an endro or regular dr? What was your TSH when they offered you the addition of cytomel? So the 88 sythroid didn't work for you? I was just wondering how bad people feel to get T3. What convinces these drs to add t3. It amazes me so many of the books suggest 90% T4/10% T3 or 80% T4/20% T3 as the best treatment. This makes sence since we are trying to level out T4 AND T3. Yet the drs are pushing T4 only treatment. Also, they aren't prescribing per weight, yet all the books say to do this including the manufacturer of synthroid. Guest guest
Hi , Not sure I can completely answer your question. But it is hard to compare the two if the reason you need the cytomel is because of conversion problems, if you follow. How I got cytomel... I went to the endo from a PCP with a TSH of 3.0 and all the hypo symptoms. I felt terrible but my PCP said my labs were fine. The endo did some tests, discovered high antibodies and said the labs would not be very indicative because of this. He started upping my synthyroid and I did feel much better. No matter how much synthroid we added I still had a few lingering symptoms that would absolutely not improve. (lack of hunger, cold, thinning hair, weight, brain fog, and this ocassional cyclic depression/tearful episodes. He initially tried to dismiss this as a psychological issue, which I would not be oppossed to dealing with that if it were true - but these episodes come on and leave suddenly without environmental provacation. Two years prior I had explored this with a therapist and tried an antidepressant. It simply didn't work and the therapist couldn't find any psychological reason for it. No surprise here, but why was I suddenly cracking up and why was it cyclical - come and go immediately, I charted it even. When the endo saw me in one of these moods, he finally agreed to try adding cytomel. It has been over two years since this was added to the synthroid mix and I have never had one of those episodes again. And, I am not on any other medications or antidepressants or herbs. Go by the labs if you want, but I think this proves there was/is a conversion problem. Sherry > > > > I take 25 cytomel and 50 of synthroid. That was to replace 88 > > synthroid only. Guest guest
Hi Sherry! Thanks for the info. I finally got my endro to call back after a week and 4 calls to them. He's added 1 grain of Armour to my 75 synthroid. I'm not going with the pa and cytomel since she overmedicated me and admitted she was guessing at the dose. What's a PCP? Interesting what your dr said about antibodies. Were yours really high? Mine at <7 for one of the 2 antibodies. The other one is ok. So I guess we have to have our antibodies checked every year (after we get on a dose that makes us feel better) or so to see if it gets worse and increase meds? Is your thyroid enlarged too? Thanks for your time and info, > > > > > > I take 25 cytomel and 50 of synthroid. That was to replace 88 > > > synthroid only. I recommend cutting the cytomel in half and > > > starting there. Guest guest
Hi Wnedy, Good for you, I would have preferred trying Armour but could not get the endo to even consider it. I had to self-refer as it was so felt lucky to have a skilled doc that would work with me. Didn't want to press my luck further by moving on to another doc and the cytomel worked. (Armour is way cheaper than cytomel) PCP - the Primary Care Physician. He didn't know anything in this area but wouldn't admit it. It took me a while to question his response because I didn't know that he was so ignorant. Lots of people on the boards have found endo's to be difficult or unenlightened. Personally, I found the opposite to be true. Thryoid enlarged - no not right now. Think I may have had this when I was younger because remember choking on certain foods. Again, thought it was all in my mind - didn't know about goiters. Regarding antibodies - no need to check. If you know you have them it means the labs are most likely misleading. You will need to treat based on symptoms. The higher the antibodies, the more the labs will be off. Sherry >> Hi Sherry! >> Thanks for the info.
