Problems with thyroid meds

Hello,

I am new to this board and have many questions about the symptoms I

am having. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism about 1.5 years ago.

I had hair falling out, heart palpitations, chronic yeast

infections, always sick with something.

After I was diagnosed, my doctor put me on Synthroid 75 mcg and

Toprol to help with the heart palps. Well, the heart palps got worse

as did the hair loss. Of course, blood work was back in the normal

range, but I was having a racing heart, chest pain. It was awful. I

ended up seeing an eletrophysiologist who put me on Flecanaide to

help with the palps. This helped for awhile but then I started

getting horrible neck pain, chest pain, electrical shooting pains

through my chest. I went through a stress test, the whole deal and

everything keeps coming back normal. I feel anything but normal!!

I ended up realizing that it had to be the Synthroid. I dropped dose

all the way down to 25 mcg and felt good for a couple of weeks and

then started having same symptoms again.

I am now seeing a " natural chiropractic/nutrional doctor " who has me

on a supplement similar to Armour (T3 and T4). It too made me feel

great the first couple of weeks, but now those same symptoms are

coming back with chest pain, throat closing feeling and upper back

pain, electrical shooting pains through my back and chest. I know I

need a thyroid supplement to some degree, I just can't find that

right dose and feel like I am hurting my heart by all of these meds!

I guess the one good thing is that since I have been off the

Synthroid, my hair has stopped falling out!

Has anyone experienced anything like this?

Tina, what is the supplement similar to Armour? Is it a glandular that is

NOT Rx? You need to be on the real stuff Armour and then get Enough to

feel well. Do not dose to TSH.

I have been trying a natural supplement as well, and have been off of

synthroid

for many months now. I no longer have joint pain, my hair is improving

somewhat,

and I have more energy for the most part. Ive been using this new standard

process

supplement for around seven weeks, maybe a bit longer.

The results were more noticable in the first three weeks to be sure...

I have experienced some of the full throat feeling....but there is iodine in

this

new product, and I know that our thyroid gland will store whatever you give

it!

So, I backed off just a little...I was taking this three times per day, and

I simply

eliminated the last dose. Much better, and still experiencing the benefits

so far.

I am especially happy that the muscle weakness is lifting.

Gracia,

I actually am being followed by both my regular physician and the holistic

doctor at the moment. My regular physician is actually open to what I am doing.

My main problem is the " heart " symptoms I am having. Everytime I take too much

of anything or not enough whether it be in the form of Synthroid or natual

supplement, I either get chest pain and palpitations or my heart beats very slow

and palps if I do not get enough. It has been a nightmare for me. So right now,

I am giving the T-100's a chance. My regular physician thinks Armour make be too

much for my body to handle and may cause more heart palps. Still in the

experimental stages with the T-100s and hoping something will work soon. I am

also on vitamin supplements to strenghten by body as well.

Thanks for your input. How long have you been on Armour?

this is very common. I need to know what T-100 is!!!! The regular doc

might be a good guy and sounds good but probly doesn't have experience with

Armour. Chest pains and heart palps mean you need thyroid meds like

Armour. If you feel no better or worse on Armour, then you need adrenal

meds. Docs don't know about adrenals which is too bad. You cannot do

thyroid " lite " you need real medicine.

I have been on Armour for 6 years but needed it all my life (many years

lost). I also had a very hard time tolerating thyroid meds until I got

adrenal meds (cortisol) and some other hormones. Good book is Hormone

Solutions by Thierry Hertoghe MD

I lost alot of hair w/ theSynthroid medication. I stopped taking it about 4 mos

ago and not on any meds right now. My hair is not coming out from the root like

before. There is only a bit of hair on my comb now but...my hair is not growing

back. I have wide parts and on the back above the nape area is very sparce.

Thank God for ponytails that cover the spot. I have been using Biotin a nail

and hair enhancer but not sure if I'm seeing any results. Synthroid also

promoted much weight gain quickly. Write back to amor007(at)sbcglobal.net

the iodine retention seems to be a very individual thing - I take it

regularly (iodine solution) and never feel that I am taking too much or

that it concentrates in my Thyroid - so far anyway.

HI there,

sorry if you didn't receive replies - most of us probably don't have

time to write back to a private email - besides any info that we share

might help others so its good to post it on the board.

If you have been following the posts I'm sure you have read about adding

T3 to your meds, Synthroid alone can be real trouble for some. And you

might have adrenal issues as well - are you stressed?

Hair loss is a common symptom - I don't know why you would get it from

taking thyroid meds - are you certain that was the cause?

I would go further. Hair loss is more likely a symptom of insufficient

medication, not too much.

I would also suggest that if no one responded to your posting, perhaps

it is because it did not suggest anything specific or ask a question

that would prompt a response. It is not because there are special rules

or that folks here are rude. You simply posted a short list of things

typical for hypothyroidism. So, welcome to the list.

sorry if you didn't receive replies - most of us probably don't have

time to write back to a private email - besides any info that we share

might help others so its good to post it on the board.

HI Carol,

It is difficult to know what to suggest - what do you already take, not

just for your adrenals but in general?

Hi,

Liothyronine is synthetic T3 and is different from Armour .Armour contains

natural (extracted from pigs, cows) T3 and T4 along with other thyroid hormones.
