Changing to Armour

Has anyone changed from T3 (or T4, I guess) to Armour? How did you

change over? Did you go from an equivalent strength of the one to the

other in a few weeks or longer? I was taking 45mcg of T3, and my

doctor has me changing over two weeks to 60mgs of Armour. According

to the Armour site, an equivalent dose of Armour would be about

120mgs. Can I go to this dose over several weeks, or do I need to

spread it out more? My doctor only told me to go to 60mgs and then

wait four weeks to have my TSH tested. I'd like to ask him if I can

go up some more now that I've transitioned to the 60mgs (I've been on

it a week). Is this wise?

Thanks for any help!

,

I am about to make the switch too.

It is my understanding that if you were not having hyper symptoms at

your current dosage, you change to the equivalent, so you could go

straight to the equivalent.

Your dosage is equivalent to even more actually, to 2 1/2 grains Armour

(160mg). Each 60mgs has 38mcg T4 and 9mcg T3. If you convert the Armour

dosage into T3 only (divide the 38mcg by 4 and add to the 9mcg), each

grain Armour is 18.5mcg T3. Divide 45 by 18.5 and you have 2.43 grains

(160mg).

yes I am sure you can increase Armour another 30mg. I needed to increase

very fast from 60 to 90. No reason to torture yourself.

I went from Synthroid to Armour. The doc just figured out the equivalent and

gave me that.

Hi Ginny

What made you change to Armour once you discovered the synthetic T4 and T3 were improving your symptoms? You might wish to try adding another half grain in a couple of weeks considering you were on such a high dose of synthetic T4 and T3, and keep adding the extra half grain in the same way until you find your sweet spot. If you experiment by adding a bit more T4 or T3 at this early stage, you are not going to know whether Armour alone will work, and it is only when you have taken the dose of Armour that you feel should be making you well again, but it isn't, that you then decide whether any synthetic additions are needed or not. Give it time, but make sure you are taking at least 200 mcgs Selenium daily.

You should check that you do not have any of the associated conditions that go along with being hypothyroid. You will find these in our web site www.tpa-uk.org.uk under Hypothyroidism, and then in the drop down menu under 'Associated Conditions'. Have you had your ferritin (stored iron) checked to see whether this is low and also, get your B12 checked.

Hi everyone,

I am reasnably new to group and wondered if anyone could help me.I have been taking T4 150mcg and T3 30mcg for some months now and gradually began to feel an overall improvement in hypo symptoms.I am now changing to Armour and have taken 1 grain for a week and am now taking 1 and a half grains but already can feel some of my hypo symptoms returning.Presumably my T4/T3 ratio is now lower than before and Shelia has advised me to increase by half a grain every 3 to 4 weeks. Is it possible for me to add say 10/20mcg of synthetic T3 to my Armour dosage just until I get to correct dosage over the next couple of months or is this not advisable?I feel that apart from increased exhaustion I am blowing up like a balloon!

Any comments, and or help would be greatly appreciated.

Best wishes,

Ginny
