I don't know how long you have been on this dose but you have to wean very

slow. I have been on adrenal treatment for one year under a doctors care

and have had a few 's crisis and had to go to the ER. If you wean

too fast you could cause yourself to have an 's crisis even though

you may not have the full blown disease...you are on the same treatment as a

person with 's disease. It's VERY dangerous to just quite. I have

been trying to wean off since Feb. and I was only on 20mg a day total for 1

year. Each time I get to 5mg to 2.5mg I got into a crisis. I have had two

in two weeks and they are not fun! I'm not trying to scare anyone...just

sharing my expierience. The dose you have been taking I would say is

hurting your adrenals more than helping them. I do hope you are careful

when you wean off. The longer you are on a dose the harder it is to get the

body's adrenals to come back on. A dose as high as you are taking will

surpress the adrenals completly and cause them to shrink and atrophy over

time. I have been reducing by 5mg every two weeks until the last 5mg and

then you go to 2.5 for two weeks until weaned. Hope this helps!

Bev,

How long did it take to wean off? So far I have been weaning for 3 months.

My health is okay...just can't take any stress right now. It sends me into

an 's crisis. I have had two in the past two weeks and with 1 ER

trip. I am hoping to get through this soon as I am an adrenal junky and

can't do any of the activities I want to do.

Gracia,

You can say this is misinformation, but I am posting what I have been

through which is a fact of the disease. Please post a link or information

that supports your statement. I'm just sharing with others what I have gone

through while being on Cortisone treatment. I think it's important to share

the negatives and the positives. I will say that getting on it improved my

life greatly...just remember that adrenal fatigue is temporary and at some

point you have to wean off of it. This process can make one quite sick very

suddenly if you encounter stress during your weaning period. If you don't

catch it early enough after you expierience stress...you can going into an

's crisis. I do hope that in the end, my adrenals come back on and

work properly. We just don't know yet if they will.

Thanks!

Symptoms may include nausea and/or vomiting, dizziness and confusion

often accompanied by low blood pressure, drowsiness eventually progressing

to

coma, and severe headache akin to migraine. The patient may also complain of

extreme weakness, bodily pain and/or tenderness, and of feeling feverish,

& may be found to have tachycardia (fast heart rate), bradycardia (slow

heart

rate), or an irregular heart rate (palpitations).

My last crisis...I felt like I had the flu very suddenly...throwing up,

diarrhea, internal shaking, severe muscle weakness to the point I felt I

could not walk, labored breathing. What was interesting was my blood

pressure started dropping and then suddenly went VERY high...150/90 (this is

when I left work for the ER)...it was 115/80 something earlier that

morning.... Within mintues of getting a Cortisone shot, I started getting

relief... in an hour, I felt normal again.

Hi LaCretia,

The normal time is one year and that's what the docs. had me do, one year. I

think I might have some insuffiency but the test don't show it. But, I'm going

to have my doc. give me a blood work paper for when I have the attacks to go

into the ER and have them take blood & test it to see if it's just when I have

the attacks. I had one this past weekend, what a doosy it was, felt like I was

going to die. If I would just show up at the ER they would not test for what I

need to be tested for is why I don't even bother going there now. Boy, I know

what you mean about being an adrenal junky, I used to be to and it has been very

hard adjusting to doing not very much at all. WHEW!!!!!!! I really don't

believe I'm adjusted yet & it has been since 1991 since I had my adrenal gland

taken out.

take care

Thanks!

LacCretia,

I have never taken cortef. When I had the surgery for the cushings and only had

one adrenal gland left they stared me on predinsone right away. I was on the

highest does(I can't remember what it was now, been too long ago) for a couple

of months to see if I was ok, then he would reduce the amount every couple of

months , always making sure I was going to be ok, and like you said the mg. got

so low I had to break the med. in half then quarters and then I was off of it. I

had the surgery in 12-1991. I went to a addisons support group and started

reading and you were right. I read some pretty nasty things that I don't want

to go through.

thanks

I think at the very end after I got down to the quarter of a pill I started

taking 1/4 every other day.

LaCretia, we all got your point, move on. This is a

hypothyroid group. If you've got pertinent information

relating to Hypo then share it otherwise ...

Keep the bickering with Gracia outside the group. It's

annoying and distracting from what the rest of us are

trying to do - gain a better, clearer understanding of

hypothyroidism and its treatment. Your bickering is

clouding it up.

Enough's enough.

The worst info on adrenals that I have seen has come from s patients.

They are relying on endos who seem to be unaware of all the other hormones

produced by adrenal glands. Doctors who understand adrenals are at

http://www.brodabarnes.org I am kind of thinking that you will have to

get sick and tired of being sick and tired.

Gracia

> LacCretia,

> I have never taken cortef. When I had the surgery for the cushings and

only had one adrenal gland left they stared me on predinsone right away. I

was on the highest does(I can't remember what it was now, been too long ago)

for a couple of months to see if I was ok, then he would reduce the amount

every couple of months , always making sure I was going to be ok, and like

you said the mg. got so low I had to break the med. in half then quarters

and then I was off of it. I had the surgery in 12-1991. I went to a addisons

support group and started reading and you were right. I read some pretty

nasty things that I don't want to go through.

Adrenal insufficiency/s/ adrenal hyperplasia are VERY MUCH related to

hypothyroidism. They go hand in hand. Doctors do not know this and many

people die b/c of it.

Mike, what bickering?????

The discussion about the thyroid/adrenal conection has been very

polite and informative on both sides.

Adrenal funtion information is very pertinent to thyroid dysfuntion.

It looks like you are the only one annoyed and distracted. I think

you would be much happier if you just unsubcribed from this Group

instead of insulting a most valued member!

I know we would be.

I am with Pamela on this too. There are medical conditions that are

inter-related due to the source of hormones that drive them. I would much

rather listen to BOTH sides of an argument, and take what I can from

people's OWN experiences - rather than dismiss one that may not support my

own view, or one that I may have no interest in at all.

I would much prefer someone point out a possible danger or pit fall to me,

than to let me happen upon it by accident because they did not care to speak

up.

Bev,

Sorry to get back to you so late. Did I understand that right...1 year to

wean off? What was your weaning schedule like? I'm curious...I'm down to

2.5 now and doing ok this week. Why did they remove your adrenals? It

seems that you were on the same treatment but, I didn't understand why they

removed them? I have had two crisis in the past 3 wks though. Now I'm

having cracked lips which is a sign of low B12 and I'm constantly going to

the bathroom... low salt I suspect. I drank a large helping of salt water

this morning and it really helped!

That's the same I have been doing except at the end I'm on 2.5 mg for two

weeks then off! One more week and I'm off! We'll see if I make it without

a crisis!

Sorry you feel that way, we were having a discussion, not an argument. This

is related to hypo... they can go hand in hand just as you pituitary and

hypothamulas is involved. Gracia is very well educated and gives a lot of

excellent advise here. I just wanted to share the negatives of taking such

a treatment. I have Hashi's and later found that I had an adrenal problem

which I think is relevent to discuss here since I see a tremendous amount of

postings on the matter. Also, the adrenals should be treated before the

thryoid which never happens. They are linked and thus important to discuss.

Many still suffer here because there doctors don't ever test their

adrenals to begin with. No matter how much thyroid medication I received, I

was still sick... later we found my adrenals were caput.

I feel it's a shame when others flame someone for just sharing their

expierience with a certain treatment protocol. I also take Armour for my

Hashi's which is well controlled. If you remember, I was responded to

another lady who is taking adrenal treatment and was taking too high of a

dosage. I got flamed considerablly for this...even though I can post links

to the facts I posted that support what I was saying.

Gracia,

I was just sharing my expierience with others. I'm sorry you feel the need

to put someone down instead of just guiding them to the correct information.

I have seen you on this board for a while and respect your opinion. I

don't want to waste others time reading posts that don't help them and I'm

sure they don't want to read arguments. I thought we were having a

discussion not a debate. Your statement about patients relying on

endos who seem to be unaware of all the other hormones produced by the

adrenal glands was insulting...which is sad. I'm sorry you feel all endo's

are bad. Personally, I don't see an endo at all... so you are wrong about

that. Anyway, thanks for sharing your opinion anyways. Like I said... I

won't waste anymore time on this. Some others were reading this and came

back with very good information that helped me and I appreciate that.

Thank you Gracia...

You are very correct...good point and it's important to study the entire

endocrine system...not just the thyroid.
