you really need a better doc, I just don't think you have any more time to

be educating him/her.

Gracia,

I wish that could happen, but there just aren't any around here.. I

hate the fact that I have to do the work, but I would rather do the

work and have a doc. that will do the test I ask and pretty much

raise my meds. when I ask than a doc. that won't do anything and say

that's all I can do for you.....and that's what I have had in the

past... so if you have info to help me it would be appreciated

other wise please back off of getting another doc...

thanks

where do you live? I live in the woods of Maine, sometimes have had to

travel 3 hours to a helpful doc, but I also self medicated. I was

desperate and didn't want to lose my house etc. I found that I am as good

as the best doc I have seen. Maybe you would be better off taking the doc

a book like Hormone Solutions or Hormones Health and Happiness. You are

suffering needlessly. This is not rocket science. Most adrenal testing

won't tell you much. I work with a retarded man who has every symptom of

congenital hypothyroidism and 's, his adrenal testing came out low

and TSH " normal " so he is being treated with risperdal!

I'm in southern Ohio and I already drive 2 hours to get to the doc.

I have now & am grateful to have, since all the rest are just big

duds. There are actually none in my neighborhood, that's why I go to

central Ohio where I have been to all of those big duds until I

asked a doc. I already had to do testing and he said yes he would..

I agree some of the tests they do are BS. but I feel some are a

help. I have came across some articals just now and have found what

I was looking for.. or at least some of it..

What I was looking for was:

When you have low adrenal function you should be treatec for that

before you start on thyroid meds. because it could cause a crisis..

right!!!??!! ok, what I think is going on with me is the doc. didn't

do the test before starting me on synthroid and 3 days later I

started having hypoglcemia symptom episodes.. and having been

having them ever since, just not as often..

Glucocorticods (a adrenal hormone) are for raising blood sugar

anytime and during stress(meaning most of the time for everything)

and that's just not happening for me..

Tomarrow the doc. is doing adrenal testing. If he's not prepared to

do a saliva test that's what I will be asking for.. lol, I'm not

sure why yet, but.... I know the atch stim. test doesn't work on

me.. When I had cushings and that doc. was testing me, he did alot

of atch stim. tests and the test always came back just alittle high,

but when he did a 24 hour urine test, BAM, it came back 3 times the

normal amount, so he then could order the scan to find the tumor on

my left adrenal gland.. I believe I've been low ever since.. but I

don't think they're doing the right tests.. So, we'll see what

happens tomarrow..

About self medicating for adrenals,,,, scary stuff, I know first

hand what the out come could be (NOT GOOD or fun at all), so for

now I choose to do it the medical way, but if they can't see things

my way , well then that's different..

Stay with me..

take care

Oh yea, and the most reason of all I can't self medicate is I can't

afford it. I live on Soc. Sec. It's just not fisable for me to do

that..

BY the way Bev, you don't have to look any further than your bottle of

Synthroid for the adrenal thyroid connection - on every set of

instructions it clearly states that adrenal issues must be treated first

- all you need to do is show this to your soc and say " please

explain!!!!! "

This is why it is so hugely unbelievable that they don't do it - even

their blessed drug companies are telling them to........

good luck with your doc - I hope he listens to you,

Kerry

Are you kidding? It's not at all scary, this is what I am trying to tell

you, it is not rocket science. So part of the problem is your belief

system.

Cortisol only stays in the blood 3-4 hours, so it's real easy to tell if

helps or not, and of course you only use low dose. Are you taking any

DHEA?

Where does one get cortisol to self medicate? What form is it in? How do you

guesstimate how much to start with?

I have to agree with Gracia. Done properly there is not a risk. You

only use physiologic doses, not enough to cause your adrenals to shut

down. I've been taking Cortef in small doses for about five weeks

now, and it's not a problem. I also take 25 mg DHEA and 50 mg

Pregnenolone, adrenal glandulars and hydrocortisone cream.

What I am talking about are brain tumors..... After the Cushings my

docs. really pushed the ideas in my head that taking steriods would

cause brain tumors and that's real hard to get out of your head....

That's what I mean by scary.... A challenge is never scary... but a

tumor is,, been there done that..

not fun...

Yes, I do agree, but I just do things differently than what I would

call under the table.. I don't self medicate.. and I won't unless it

comes down to my test results coming back and it plainly says I have

low adrenal and I ask the doc. to give me meds. and he won't for

some reason.. I would really just have to convince him,, because I

just can't afford to self medicate, my insurance won't pay for it

unless my doc. presribes & I can't pay out of pocket no money..

I have very good insurance, and it's still cheaper for me to order cortef

from mastersmarketing than to use insurance. But I think you will have to

wait a long long time for tests to show something abnormal.

hydrocortone (cortef)

I buy 10mg tabs and they are scored so I break them, take 5mg 4X a day @8a,

11, 2p, 5. (approximate!)

Adrenal support doses are 10-30mg a day, these are safe doses as per

Jefferies MD who wrote Safe Uses of Cortisol.

no, cortef must be taken 4X a day, it is not long lasting. One movitater

is that you will feel good when you take it--I always look forward to it.

You can get deltacortil which is slow release and lasts 24 hrs. 5mg

delta=20mg cortef. Dosages are not the same. Hertoghe says that cortef is

better for mental complaints.

OMG

I have never heard of anybody not passing the test. The tests are a huge

obstacle to getting good treatment.

Actually there is a sure shot test (according to some people who i know have

failed it) for adrenals. It is not normaly done due to the difficult and

somewhat dangerous procedure.

The test is called insulin tolerance test or an ILT. During this test, they

inject you with insulin and intentionally drop your glucose level. After

that, they take blood samples every 30 minutes and check your cortisol and

growth hormone levels. The body's natural response to a severe drop in

glucose is to make more cortisol. Therefore, if your levels do not rise you

definitely have adrenal insufficiency. If you do get this test done make

sure the medical staff doing this test is proficient in giving it and

interpreting the results. This test can be dangerous because they will drop

your glucose to approximately 40 or a little below and then bring you out of it

with a glucose I.V. I hear that in the U.S MD in Houston, Texas are

well versed in how to give this test and its interpretation.

I can never remember to take my temperature at all! But I sure can

remember to take my pills. I take Armour three times a day, and do

not forget, ever. And, like Gracia, I do not forget to take my Cortef

either. It's just a matter of getting into the routine. On the other

hand, it's early days for me. I have only been on dessicated for

about a year in total. Quite possibly in the years ahead, I may

become lax about all this pill-taking-- maybe...

But yes, Deltacortril might be a better option for many people.
