what lynda said is a definite possibility. you can take your thyroid medicine

every day but if you're consuming too much soy, then your medicine may not be

able to work the way it should. soy DOES interfere with thyroid medication.

Here's some links so you can check it out for yourself:

http://thyroid.about.com/cs/soyinfo/index.htm

http://www.soyonlineservice.co.nz/soytest.htm

I used to consume so much soy it wasn't funny. I was vegetarian most of my life.

I'm sure it contributed to my thyroid problems.

i would suggest you work with a nutritionist or dietician who will look at your

health issues, as well as your personal likes and dislike, in order to help you

find a healthy way of eating which would promote weight loss. I don't know what

your story is, but I hear some desperation to lose voice, and I certainly

understand that. I've been there.

I went to a dietician/nutritionist years ago, and she helped me more than I can

possibly say. Most doctors don't know beans about nutrition; most of them don't

even take one class in college on nutrition. My doctors had me on 800-1000

calorie diets. My nutritionist said that was WAY not enough energy for me; it

was throwing my body into starvation mode so I couldn't lose weight.

After years of being desperate to lose weight, I finally decided to trust

someone-this nutritionist. I went from 300 pounds to 135 pounds. Granted, I

don't think i had a thyroid problem at this time. but after years of struggling

to lose weight, it finally happened. She showed me a way i could eat healthy and

not be hungry.

Having a thyroid problem can make things a little trickier, in my opinion. There

are certain foods we should avoid: soy and other goitrens (are you aware of

them?). many of us on this forum struggle with losing weight because of our

thyroid problem. I think that's all the more reason to seek the professional

help of a dietician.

I saw mine at the local health department because I was in college and couldn't

afford anyone else. it cost me like a buck or two every time i saw her, and it

was worth every penny (and more!).

Anyway, that's my two cents. all i can say is it worked for me.

Hang in! Hugs, Sheila

You are on medifast shakes?? I was on that several years ago when I was a

teenager and I am almost postive that it was told that those drinks are not good

for you that is why my mom took me off of them- Yes they help you lose weight

--LOTs of weight but once you stop taking the shakes you weight comes back--

fast! My aunt also was taking them she weight I guess around 200 pounds and she

went do to 130 pounds- once she stoped taking them she went back up and now she

is at 230 pounds- I hope you can find another way to lose weight- I heard the

adkins diet is good- I just recently started doing the adkins diet so I am not

sure yet on the results- I will keep you updated- and about the crying I am not

sure why that is going on- When I took medifast I dont recall it making me do

that- I cant remember- being heavy all together is so depressing so it may be

depressing you becasue of that- I weight 250 pounds and I am depressed because

of it- But I keep walking and think in my head each day

that goes by is a day closer to me being skinny-- that is truthfully what gets

me through the days! keisha

Too many carbs puts me in a crying jag. If you find Atkins to strick you might

want to check into The Carbohydrate Addicts Lifespan Program by and

Heller. It is a restricted carb diet but one meal a day you can eat a

carb in proportion to the rest of you food selections.

How long have you been on medifast? Normally you lose weight in about one month

and it goes fast- But like I said once you stop taking the shake it will come

all back and more- I hope you can find other ways to lose the weight, I will

pray for you- I know exactly whre you are coming from I have been heavey most of

my life and it really does suck! I will tell you there is a drug called at The

GNC store- called Herbal Phen fen's it is not bad for you- I was on that for a

while and I lost 70 pounds in 3 months!!! But I will tell you---- you realy wont

eat! nothng hardly! I would eat a kids meal from mcdonalds ever day once a day

only-- and you will sleep all the time-- It makes you tired an drained- It is

like 28.00 per bottle the bottle last for two weeks! I had to stop taking it

because I foundout i had high blood pressure- But it more then likely will

interfer with your thyroid meds- Every thing seems to interact with the meds in

some way-- lol-- and honestly your thyroid meds are so

much important- it really controls your body and on how it does- I hope things

work out for you-- what area are you from?? I am in indiana- well hope things go

good for you- keisha

yeah you are right, it is doc prescribed- I know years ago my doc went out of

business because of it- You may want to do some research on line about it- I am

not sure- I have noticed those in exsperience doctors are not always right and

they dont always make the right decisions- they just like to make the big

bucks-- know what I mean- they may have came up with something to correct the

medifast I mean I havent heard about it in atleast 10 years- so I dont know-

Check out " The Paleo Diet " by Dr. Loren Cordain.

Full of wonderful information, easy to read, and

recipies. This book goes into detail regarding

human physiology and what we are designed

to thrive on!

It has made a tremendous improvement in my

life....

How much do you weigh now? I can't believe you are only on

900 calories a day. Are you being supervised by your doctor?

If you do not get adequate calories for your weight, you will

continue to store those calories and then some.

Your body will interpret this restriction as " famine " .

and everything you take in will be saved for later.

Making it even harder to lose. Your metabolism

will slow down in an effort to " conserve " energy until

the famine has passed.

Your body needs a fair amount of calories to just do

what it has to. Like keeping warm, and repairing

muscle, digesting, walking, growing etc....

It is very important to supply the right calories

for these functions to take place. And then if

you are very active, it requires even more.

Perhaps a change in attitude regarding food is

needed. After all, it is ONLY FUEL.

Kim, everything Chriss said here is right on target!

Like i said in a post a couple of days ago, when i saw my

dietician/nutritionist, she told me that the doctors who were telling me i

needed to be on an 800, 900, 1000 calorie diet were basically putting my body in

starvation mode.

i was 300 pounds at the time. maybe more. the scale only went up to 300 so who

knows. anyway, she said a 300 pound person who wants to lose weight HAS to

consume more energy (calories) than 150 pound person who wants to lose weight.

Now, she didn't have me counting calories or fat or anything else. She had me

look at the pyramid and told me approximately how many servings of each i needed

to be eating. and i forget how many calories that was equivalent to, but it was

crazy. It was over 2,000 though. I thought she was nuts, but she just asked me

what did I have to lose? I had listened to the doctors and followed their diets

and their advice and it never worked. I was scared I was going to just gain,

gain, gain, and never stop, but she assured me that would NOT happen. She said

doctors just tell their patients to go on these diets without being trained. She

said the reason i never lost weight is because my body was not getting enough

energy to do all though basic functions and went into conservation mode. it was

going to hold onto every ounce of fat i had!

It worked. I went from 300 pounds to 135 pounds.

What Chriss said about having a change of attitude is right on, too! Before I

thought food was bad, bad, bad! Food is fuel. It's energy. My

nutritionist/dietician helped me change a lot of attitudes, and boy did that

help a lot, too.

I'm not trying to sound preachy to you, and I'm not trying to tell you what to

do. It's your choice. It's your body; it's your life. All i know is NOTHING ever

worked for me before.

I don't like to give out advice, but I believe dieticians and nutritionists can

be very helpful. They can educate us; they can support us; and they can help us

find a way to lose weight and still be healthy. i believe they can help you.

My two cents...from someone who was as obese as they come....Hugs, Sheila

Ethiopians also have the opportunity for movement in their day.

No TV, video games, cars etc... Not to mention the fact that do

NOT eat what they are not intended by nature to eat.

Lack of water is primary to their condition. They cannot

grow what they need or nurture livestock in their environment.

Consider the health problems that they have because of

NO calories....Their bodies literally feed off of themselves.

Of course you HAVE to lose, but weight is not the only

thing that is lost!

I would not strive for the Ethiopian diet.

It is very simple really. It just takes commitment.

And in some of our cases some medical intervention

with thyroid meds.

But, the bulk of it is our choice. If we had the same

attitude about food as other less developed places

we too would be better off. But for us it represents

too much. We use it for comfort, and for social purposes

When we are bored, when we are stressed, when we

need a reward, what do we do? We EAT....

By attitude, I meant something like this....

Next time you are hungry....

Don't ask yourself what you WANT.

Ask yourself what you NEED...

What have you not given yourself enough of. Protien, vegis, water etc....

And then decide what to feed yourself.

i have no attitude towards food.. yes it is supervised i have dr call ins

twice weekly plus a health advisor ect.. thing is on 900 (they actually

recommend 500 calories) anyone should lose weight.. doesnt matter if you go

into starvation mode you HAVE to lose at that set calories the worst hypo

you only lose 3 pounds a month.. which is whats happening to me :( (gastro

bipass surgeries only get like 300-400 calories for like 6 weeks a day)

nutritionist/dietician helped me change a lot of attitudes, and boy did that

help a lot, too.

Have you read J. Shomon's website?? She has alot of info for weight loss

and stuff for hypo people. It says on that site that you have to have a certain

amount of calories per day in order to lose any weight. As far for gastric

bypass surgery - my friend had that done and the only reason they are only allow

to eat certain foods is because if they over eat they will get sick. There

stomach is alot smaller then normal- I am not sure how much you weight I know

for someone who is around 250 pounds there calorie in take is somewhere in

between 2500 -3000 carlories a day. If someone only eats 500 carlories a day(

basically) starving there self - they may lose weight but they will also lose

other stuff as well and once they start to eat regularly they will gain all of

it back. and it will drain your body down. You need food in order to function on

a daily schedule. and to have engery. About the attitude on food that means,

I'll give you an example " : for me " I use to look at food in the

outlook as I cant have that I will gain more weight and I wouldnt want to eat

( But of course I did!) and then I would hate myself or the food at that time.

But I have learn over the several months since dianosed with hypo- that It isnt

what you eat -- it is how much of it you eat> I had to learn to limit myself. So

now I eat what I want but just not as much- and I feel better. I hope you find

something that works for you- keisha

supervised i have dr call ins

twice weekly plus a health advisor ect.. thing is on 900 (they actually

recommend 500 calories) anyone should lose weight.. doesnt matter if you go

into starvation mode you HAVE to lose at that set calories the worst hypo

you only lose 3 pounds a month.. which is whats happening to me :( (gastro

bipass surgeries only get like 300-400 calories for like 6 weeks a day)

NEW FOOD GUIDELINES REVISE FOOD AND EXERCISE RECOMMENDATIONS

---------------------------------

To meet the body's daily energy and nutritional needs while minimizing risk for

chronic disease, adults should get 45 percent to 65 percent of their calories

from carbohydrates, 20 percent to 35 percent from fat, and 10 percent to 35

percent from protein, says the newest report on recommendations for healthy

eating from the National Academies' Institute of Medicine. To maintain

cardiovascular health at a maximal level, regardless of weight, adults and

children also should spend a total of at least one hour each day in moderately

intense physical activity, which is double the daily goal set by the 1996

Surgeon General's report.

Because carbohydrates, fat, and protein all serve as energy sources and can

substitute for one another to some extent to meet caloric needs, the recommended

ranges for consuming these nutrients should be useful and flexible for dietary

planning. Earlier guidelines called for diets with 50 percent or more of

carbohydrate and 30 percent or less of fat; protein intake recommendations are

the same. The new acceptable ranges for children are similar to those for

adults, except that infants and younger children need a slightly higher

proportion of fat -- 25 percent to 40 percent of their caloric intake, said the

panel that wrote the report.

" We established ranges for fat, carbohydrates, and protein because they must be

considered together, " said panel chair Joanne Lupton, professor of nutrition,

Texas A & M University, College Station. " Studies show that when people eat very

low levels of fat combined with very high levels of carbohydrates, high-density

lipoprotein concentration, or " good " cholesterol, " decreases. Conversely,

high-fat diets can lead to obesity and its complications if caloric intake is

increased as well, which is often the case. We believe these ranges will help

people make healthy and more realistic choices based on their own food

preferences. "

The report stresses the importance of balancing diet with exercise, recommending

total calories to be consumed by individuals of given heights, weights, and

genders for each of four different levels of physical activity. For example, a

30-year-old woman who is 5 feet 5 inches tall and weighs 111 to 150 pounds

should consume between 1,800 and 2,000 calories daily if she lives a sedentary

lifestyle. However, if she is a very active person, her recommended total

caloric intake increases to 2,500 to 2,800 calories per day. If her lifestyle

fits the moderately active category as defined in the report, which is the

minimum level of activity to decrease risk of chronic disease, she should eat

between 2,200 and 2,500 calories daily. Using grams for the recommended ranges

of intake, she should consume 55 to 97 grams of fat and 285 to 375 grams of

carbohydrates per day.

The new one-hour-a-day-total exercise goal stems from studies of how much energy

is expended on average each day by individuals who maintain a healthy weight.

Energy expenditure is cumulative, including both low-intensity activities of

daily life, such as stair climbing and housecleaning, and more vigorous exercise

like swimming and cycling. Someone in a largely sedentary occupation can achieve

the new exercise goal by engaging in a moderate-intensity activity, such as

walking at 4 miles per hour, for a total of 60 minutes every day, or engaging in

a high-intensity activity, such as jogging for 20 to 30 minutes four to seven

days per week.
