Dear Marcella,

I'm taking timed release T3 the past year and a half. My doctor said I'd

lose the weight soon after starting the medicine but it didn't come off

without work. After four months of medicine and no appreciable weight

change, I joined Weight Watchers. That was a year ago last February. It

took me nearly a year to lose 30 pounds following their Points System. It is

easier when I'm on high levels of the WT3. When I have to cycle off the

medicine, it gets harder and in fact, I often gain 2-3 pounds until I go on

the next cycle of medicine.

In the past three months I've lost another 5 pounds. I did the WW program

and still am on WW Lifetime Maintenance to keep myself at a good weight. I

follow it about 85% of the time. I had to actively count points, watch my

food intake levels, learn how to eat a lot to satisfy my appetite but pick

low points foods to stay within my daily points range. I think slow weight

loss is better because now it's easier to keep off the weight; I definitely

do not want to yo-yo! I walk some and do Pilates to burn calories but I'm

not super gung-ho with exercise because it aggravates my knee and hip.

I haven't taken DHEA. Can't seem to find any help in it yet. Perhaps I'm

not taking the right amount or the form my body likes.

I think no one has answered because no one knows. Everyone is different. I

took Armour (with it's T3) last spring and summer. I felt fabulous until I

overdosed. But I gained 5 pounds at first and then finally lost it. My

appetite increased for a while. I take DHEA but can't tell if it makes me

feel better. There just isn't aa pat answer to your question.

Perhaps it would help if you told us more. For example, are you taking

straight T3 and if so, why just T3 and not T4 or Armour? What do your labs

show?

Hello to all:

I have posted a note 2 or 3 times and I never seem to get an answer

from anyone regarding the questions I asked, so I am just going to

ask l and hopefully some people may answer. How long did it take

before you took DHEA and T3 before your energy came back and before

you were able to lose weight? Thats it. Thank you.

I think it's a great misconception that you will start losing weight as

soon as you start taking meds to fix hypothyroidism. In most cases

people will quit gaining and may lose 5-10 pounds, but other than that,

you have to work at it. I don't take DHEA or T3, but my energy levels

increased about two weeks after I was on the correct dose of synthroid.

Everyone is different, but you should see a change in less than six

weeks.

Please help by just answering this

questions...

Thank you for your answer. Actually if you look up the page on the

board I do have a couple of posts that already tell all. My T3 is at

3.0 but apparently my T4 is ok. Please read my previous post with

all the figures. Thanks and I appreciate any input you have.

-Thanks . I exercise almost everyday. I do Aerobics, palatis,

yoga, hip hop class and Curves 3X week (circuit trainning). I too

joined WeightWatchers in the fall only to not lose anything. I am

now on a very low calorie diet, actually Cambridge Diet and I cannot

lose a pound. To me this tells me that something is absolutely

wrong. I only began my meds last week, but I am so frustrated about

this weight. I was hoping someone would actually give me an

approximate time. I guess that won't happen. Thanks for your help.

Dear Marcella,

If you've only just begun your meds, you will probably need some more time for

them to help your body change. You're on T3, right? I know before I got on

medicine, I was on low calorie diets, doing the Bill , Body For Life

program, exercising every day yet I gained! There is something so very

important about getting the right type of medicine for you into your body!!

Once I found the WT3, it began to make it possible for me to lose. Give

yourself time. I can hear your frustration with the weight but give yourself

time for the medicine to start helping you.

To your best health,

Low-carbohydrate diets seem to work better for people with

hypothyroidism than low-calorie diets.

This is my experience too, and I also only take oroxine. Most of my

symptoms improved radically over the first few weeks, once I started

medication about 18 months ago... no more cramps, didn't need 18 hours sleep

a day, depression lifted, periods settled down immediately. I've lost maybe

15 pounds over that 18 months because I have more energy to exercise (a

little gentle exercise each day, whereas before medication I was unable to

walk more than a couple minutes at a time) and more mental sharpness to eat

properly (plan my shopping, estimate fat/calorie content, cook proper

meals). But I haven't noticed any real change in my metabolic rate, nothing

magical about the weight loss.
