Guest guest
Thanks that's what I thoguht I'm not on anything prescribed yet as I have been banging my head against a brick wall for months and Armour isn't readily available over here but am recently taking a product called T-lyph made from cow which is recommended by the UK thyroid society. just wnat to go armed with more info for my next battle with teh GP DAwn > If you are taking thyroxine (synthetic T4) and you have conversion problems, then you will need to take some medicine with T3 in it. I don't know what the medicines are called in the UK; in the US you would have a choice of Armour thryoid (natural dessicated thyroid product, porcine, contains all 6 T hormones), Naturethroid or Westhroid (same as Armor, but bovine in origin), Thyrolar (synthetic T4/T3), and continuing your current T4 medicine and adding Cytomel (synthetic T3) to it. Guest guest
Hi Dawn I'm also from the UK and I was prescribed liothyronine, a synthetic form of T3 to supplement the thyroxine (T4) I had been taking for some time, because of my symptoms. My endocrinologist does test for FT3 as well as FT4, TSH and anitibodies. These blood tests are all available on the NHS but are not done automatically unless the doctor requests them. Where in the UK are you?
Guest guest
Welcome, Dawn. The T4 meds (thyroxine) work for T3 for some people just great. Even if their T3 levels are low when unmedicated, they take the T4 and convert it into T3. For others like me, it works not so great - we take the T4, and it helps but doesn't completely get rid of symptoms cause we don't convert that well, so we need to take T3 as well. But very rarely you will find someone that doesn't convert at all and only feels good by taking T3 alone. So the T4 meds help - for some they help a bit, for others they completely fix the problem. In the internet groups, the majority of people is like me - but that doesn't mean we are the majority of people out there. As the ones that don't do well on conventional treatment, it makes sense that we are the ones seeking online help.
