Guest guest
Hi Jill! When I crave something sweet, I eat dried apricots as my carb with a protein. 5 or 6 of these sweet little suckers is about a serving (20- 23g carbs). Plus they're low on the glycemic index which means they'll keep you satisfied longer and act as a 'good' carb. Another thing I keep handy are the Nitrotech bars or Myoplex Lite bars...these help when I need that chocolate fix. If you're craving ice cream, place a lite yogurt in the freezer at dinner time and then it will be softly frozen 2 hours late when it's snack time! Not ice cream, but smooth and creamy just the same. Hope this helps! a
Guest guest
You just may be a creature of habit. You're used to noshing and it's just become a habit for you to. Just ride it out, I'd say. Guest guest
Hi Jill, The only thing that works for me whenever I have the craving for sweets or choc, I will pop a chewing sugar free sweet (its like chewing gum but after 30 mins of chewing, it melts in your mouth) into my mouth. It works well for me coz after all that chewing, my thoughts and urges of sweets and choc just goes away. I hope this helps. Take care, Geri
Guest guest
<<I remember reading somewhere that a certain vitamin is lacking in the diet when cravings seem out of control>> Not a vitamin, but yes your body is lacking *something* and cravings are set off by over-insulin production in your body..its like a roller coaster thing..eat a few MM's ..feeling fine..an hour later..grumpy and craving more...something that may help, from the article " Why Sugar Makes You Fat " at: http://www.geocities.com/jgrrl2/sugar.html " Try some supplements for intense sugar cravings: Chromium Picolinate has been touted as helping insulin do its job for blood sugar management, and it's virtually impossible to get enough from your diet. Minimum 200 mcg a day is recommended. Also the amino acid L-glutamine has been found to be helpful for many people. Stir a couple of spoonfuls in some water/drink/and wait for 20 minutes. Personally I like swigging down a scoop of whey protein for whatever I'm craving or if I'm hungry ~ again the 20 minute wait and voila! I don't *really* want that candybar in the fridge that I've been saving for freeday! Guest guest
You're on the right track with the " Hi, I'm Jill.....etc. " Carb/sweet junkies have to " dry out " just like alcoholics do in order to break the cycle. Once you have a couple of weeks without a lot of high glycemic carbs you won't experience these cravings any more. Yes, the advice to ride it out is sound advice because it does get better. If you absolutely must have something sweet go for a piece/half an EAS Low Carb Cookies and Cream bar. Except for the missing crunch factor you'll think you are having an oreo. Hope this helps. Guest guest
You choco-holics out there might be interested in this. I have been looking for a calcium supplement, and found " calcuim chews " . One " chew " has 50% of your RDA of calcium, and they taste like tootsie rolls. The down side is they have three grams of sugar. Now, that is not a lot, but it is there. I figure if I'm watching my sugar elsewhere, it will not be a problem for me. Alys
Guest guest
Alys, I love those calcium chews! I've used them for a couple years. I have one after my 3rd meal, and sometimes the 6th. I look forward to taking my calcium now. It is like getting a bite of candy, only I'm in no danger of sitting down with the whole container. Guest guest
I have a question on the sugar issue. I saw on a post once where someone uses " unsweetened " soy milk? Can anyone tell me what brand that is? I am kind of limited on my choices here and can't seem to find " unsweetened " I would rather have that. Thanks Noelle Re: Munchies You choco-holics out there might be interested in this. I have been looking for a calcium supplement, and found " calcuim chews " . Guest guest
I can relate to the munchies and sugar craving. I'm an absolute sugaraholic. I used to eat sugar and only sugar. I wouldn't want anything that wasn't sweet. Unfortunately, I was such a picky eater when I was young, that my mom allowed me to live on sugary cereal, pop tarts and candy, anything to get me to eat. I still struggle with temptation, but BFL has been extremely helpful. I've found that eating my six meals a day and having a protein at each meal keeps my blood sugar level from dipping. Also, I really try to stay away from anything sweet. I have fruit with cottage cheese and sometimes I mix yogurt with cottage cheese or have sugar free jello as a snack, but that's about it. I do much better when I don't have the sweet taste in my mouth. Just the taste triggers cravings in me. I used to chew sugar free gum and suck on sugar free mints, plus drink sugar free, cal free flavored water, but all that made me crave sugar all the more. Now I stick to plain water or the occassional glass of Crystal Lite. I might chew one piece of gum a day, but that's it. Twice a day, as a treat I take Tums sugar-free; they're sweet, and it's a calcium supplement. Like Joni, I like to drink some whey protein mixed in water if my cravings get really bad. I truly believe that 98% of resisting temptation is mental. YOu just have to tell yourself that being thin and lean is more importaint than having those m and ms. Save them for your free day and have one small package then if you still want them. Dani

Guest guest
I'm the same way as well - once I have something sweet, after a meal, I feel " done " . We (unfortunately) have a small pack of M & Ms in the house right now (theoretically for my ds - lol) and I've started having one after one or two of my meals. Thankfully I just have one, sometimes two, so I doubt that it is causing anything real slow down in progress, but I'm not sure why I've started doing this lately as the same pack has been in the house since I started my challenge and I've avoided it all along. I'm thinking it's because I'm in the final week so am already starting to slack off a bit (ACK!!). Kim Re: Munchies > I have a question for all those that are doing so well on the BFL > program. Guest guest
, It's good to know I'm not the only sugar freak out there. I could live on the stuff. All I ever crave are donuts and pastries and puddings and chocolate. I can't even have sugar on my free day. It just sets off a binge in me. I have one free meal, usually on Saturday, and I'll have something I normally wouldn't have like pasta with cream sauce and bread with butter, but I can't have dessert. As soon as I eat one bite of cheesecake, I want the whole damn thing! Dani > > I can relate to the munchies and sugar craving. I'm an absolute > > sugaraholic. I used to eat sugar and only sugar. Guest guest
Oh, my gosh, Kim, what you wrote literally sounds like a miracle to me. I could NEVER have just one or two or even ten m & ms. If I have even one, I eat the whole bag and go searching for more. I kid you not. It's a force stronger than my desire to be lean. I cannot have any sweets, or I will fall off the wagon. I was so tempted, but I threw them all away in the garbage before I could eat one. I was so proud of myself. A binge avoided!! Do you think it is helping to ween you off of sweets? Have you tried having some sweet fruit at the end of the meal instead? Does that do the same trick? Might be better than the milk-duds, although one is not a problem really. I can't believe you could have a bag of them around and not eat all of them! Guest guest
Good for you for throwing them away! I think this is a relatively new thing for me - I don't remember ever before being able to only have a couple of anything, but then again I never bothered trying before - I was perfectly happy to eat whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted (not that my body didn't show the effects of course, I just had a pretty good case of denial and excuses going on! lol). I have been guilty in the past though of buying a tub of chocolate icing just to eat it straight, and yes, the entire tub! I don't think I've ever admitted that before! lol Woohoo, the first step is admitting it! lol Seriously though, that's really great that you know that about yourself and are able to control it. I don't know that I could. Kim Re: Munchies Oh, my gosh, Kim, what you wrote literally sounds like a miracle to me. I could NEVER have just one or two or even ten m & ms. Guest guest
Thank you everyone for all the great advise and testimonials. I've been chocolate free now for two days. I have a raving headache (I'm sure it's from withdraw). Everyone says its one step at a time so I can do this. Tomorrow will be the hardest. I've always heard the last 24 hours are the worst. Dani, I admire your strength in throwing out the M & M's. I would never be able to do that. WTG! Colleen great advise about the little pieces in the freezer but I know for sure I would not stop at one. The frozen yogurt in the fridge sounds like a great idea for ice cream. Raisins, dates, freeze-dried fruit, great ideas. I just need to remember there can be alot of carbs in these and to watch the intake. Just so many cool ideas. I just keep telling myself this is for life and there are sacrifices that must be made to get to that goal and stay there. Thanks again everyone, Jill (Alaska)

Guest guest
WOW Dani, I am SSSSSSSOOOOOOOOOOOO proud of you, that is a major step I know. I also must say you are REALLY good if you can stay away from sweets on your free day, that is really the only thing I want on that day, but it is what keeps me perfect the rest of the week so I let myself have it. You have alot of will power if you can resist, you should be very proud of yourself. I am the same way with m & m's there is no such thing as just having one or two or ten, I want the whole bag, especially the Peanut Butter ones MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM,favorite. Guest guest
I am with you Kim on eating whole containers of stuff, I would eat an entire half gallon of ice cream in one sitting, no guilt whatsoever. I would go out and buy the fat free stuff so I thought it was ok, then I would sit there with my 3 yr old daughter and feed her some too so that it wouldn't seem like I ate the whole thing by myself. I still can eat alot of ice cream but I haven't eaten it like I used to in quite a while, that is something for me to be proud of. It is truly all about self control, which is very hard to have at times, especially around my period. > > > I have a question for all those that are doing so well on the > BFL > > > program. Guest guest
Hey Jill and Kim, I can't always control myself around sugar, only sometimes. It's really, really hard, a life-long process, at least for me. I'll always be an addict, and I've just now gotten to the point where I can throw out the m & ms before they get me! Of course, I still slip up. I still have cravings, and I still give into them. The most important thing I've learned, though, is not beating yourself up for it, and not turning one slip up into a day long or a weekend long binge. I used to do that, and it was a viscious cycle. I would get so depressed and despise myself so much for my " weakness, " that I would end up just bingeing again, and feeling even worse. Now, I try to put slip ups into perspective. Even if I eat two donuts and a candybar in one sitting, that's about 700 calories, not great, but certainly not a deal breaker if the binge ends there. I try to not do the all or nothing thinking, where I go, " okay, I messed up, so I might as well pig out for the rest of the day, or the rest of the weekend, or whatever. " A few " bad " meals aren't going to break the bank, but a week-worth of bad eating can turn into a month, which can turn into four months, which can turn into a 35 pound weight gain. I know something about that. We all gain weight a pound at a time. No body gains 20 pounds overnight. Stay strong, ladies!
