Sodium Chloride in the Remicade infusions

Hope you might be feeling better from the infusions by now. I too have just

started on them...due for my third in two weeks.

I don't know what solution they use in the states however in Cananda the

actual Remicade drug comes as a powder and is reconstituted with 10ml of

sterile water for injection. That solution is then withdrawn from the vial

and put into a 500 cc (ml) bag of either normal saline (which is 0.9%

sodium chloride!), or a dextrose/saline combination product (usually 5%

dextrose and 0.45% sodium chloride) or the IV bag could've also been just

dextrose in water.

I actually work as a pharmacy technician in a hospital and usually the

dextrose solutions are only used for patients who are not receiving enough

calories while in hospital. Most other drugs are given via the normal

saline bag which is the sodium chloride. My infusion was mixed in a normal

saline bag.

Why am I telling you this? Well, you mentioned in your post that you didn't

think you had received sodium chloride when you had your infusion....but you

might actually have via the IV solution!

Just thought you might want to know and ask about it next time if you are

concerned. Take care.

Hello Tania,

Have you had much relief with the remicade. You are on your third

treatment and I am going on my second. So far I don't feel any different.

Sue has had a lot of luck with remicade. She felt it really soon after the

first treatment. Thanks for the information about the IV, I never thought

to ask. This time I will have questions. How many people are with you

when they do the treatment? Also, how many nurses are present?
