Guest guest
Carol, I hope you're feeling OK..I experienced the same things as you when I started my diet, but not as severely as you describe yours. You sound like the mirror image of my ex-girlfriend. If she had any carbs at all- that was it. Her binges were legendary! She tried to keep them to naturally sweetened things; i.e., candy from the health food shop, etc., but the end result was the same. Bad. A lot of the info I've come across said the same thing: brown rice is OK alternative grains are OK a little fresh fruit is OK and other little 'permissives' in the carbohydrate department. It's only through following the diet that I realized how systemic my Candidiasis really is. I suppose a good way to think of it is this: my body has certain requirements to get better: I have to learn what those requirements are. I don't like to think in terms of values like 'right' or 'wrong', but in terms of lessons. My body is ill. I will make mistakes and suffer the consequences as a result, but eventually learn a lesson. Life will present me with these lessons over and over until I learn. I think most people have an instinctive voice that 'knows' what to do, but with so much contrary advice in modern society it gets confusing. Just like you saying you feel like just eating vegetables and spirulina for a month. Maybe that's what you need, I can't say. I would, however, put it to you that you're probably right about totally avoiding carbohydrates for a time. I know people say we all need carbs. Maybe a personal anecdote might help before I get carried away: I work for a moving company. When I first went on the diet I was following the permissive Candida diets that are out there; brown rice, fruits, alternative grains, milk substitutes like rice milk, etc. The longer I was on the diet the worse these things made it for me. I'd compare it to 'oh, I'll just have one puff on that cigarette.., I'm fine.' I imagine alcoholism has a similar pull. I thought, my work is so draining, there's no way I can survive a day without some carbohydrates: maybe some gluten free bread, maybe some fresh organic fruit, a little oat bran... all these things were disastrous. When I finally couldn't avoid reality anymore and finally LISTENED to what my body was saying to me and accepted it, I dropped the carbs. No grains, no fruits, no sugars, etc. I recently even cut out carrot juice because of the sugars. I thought it should be fine (the carrot juice), so did other people, but my body said otherwise. Now I'll listen to my body over anyone, including my brain. If that makes sense Here's what happened: I felt like total crap. I felt like there was NO way I could make it through my days. I'd get to a move job, a day where we had to haul an entire suite up about 80 steps, box after box after box, after furniture, etc. I can't express how utterly drained I was after ONE hour of this. It was all I could do to place one foot in front of the other without carrying ANYthing. "It's my diet', I told myself, 'I need carbohydrates! This Candida diet is impossible!' So at the first opportunity I got some yeast free/ gluten free bread from the local shop and ate it that afternoon. Wow! I sure felt good after that. Until that evening when I felt like total utter garbage. Talk about cravings, bloating, gas, etc.. Anyway, I had this experience again and again and again and again until I learned my lesson and totally cut out carbs- period. For one week I felt the same way, like I was wasting away, 'humans can't live like this, there's no way I can go on.'. etc. I tried to rationalize eating carbs to myself in SO many ways. It's literally like having a little devil on your shoulder, lying to you all day long. Anyway, after one week my energy was WAY up! I could do my job much better than when I was eating carbs. When I get up in the morning I don't feel like crap. I can do a day's work without passing out. It took me a while to realize that what I was going through when I first cut out carbs was NOT a lack of energy from not eating them but WITHDRAWAL. It's funny I couldn't see it at the time. The little voice that told me to eat some bagels or a few dates was the same voice I listened to for years of smoking telling me 'just one more pack...' I will say quitting smoking was a SNAP compared to dropping all carbs. I totally didn't realize HOW dependent the Candida had made my psyche on these substances. They really manipulate out brain chemistry in a diabolical way to feed themselves. My purpose in all my rambling here is convey my opinion on your situation. Based on my experiences I would recommend these things: 1. If you can afford it, get a series of hydro-colonics to flush out old fecal matter in your system. Candida is a yeast, but it turns to a fungal scavenger and will use decaying, fermenting food as a fuel. It also likes mucous to protect it from anti-fungals. Flushing this out will expose much of the Candida in your intestine/colon to whatever anti-Candida treatment you take like the psyllium/bentonite/Caproil mixture. I cannot stress enough what a difference this made for me. I'm going for my fifth soon. Take enemas if you stop eliminating. Emptying your colon of waste is a priority. 2. Again, if you can, juice fresh vegetables. You can juice almost ANYthing green, I'd recommend celery, kale, garlic, cucumber, turnip greens, spinach, etc. I am avoiding carrot juice until I am in better shape. You sound like you probably should, too. The book I recommend is Fresh Vegetable and Fruit Juices- What's Missing in Your Body? by N.W. D.SC. This guy knows his business. Juicing cuts out the stress that breaking down foods puts on your body and allows it to spend that energy on healing where you need it. Read that book cover to cover. 3. Stick to vegetables, nuts, seeds, fish and poultry. Organic for the vegetables, antibiotic for the poultry. If you want red meat, and it doesn't sound like you do, just listen to your body. I eat lots of nuts, (but no peanuts) which take a long time to digest, but I (probably) have the highest energy requirement of anyone on this group. The fats are a source of energy that gets me through long days. On saturday I moved TEN refrigerators up and down stairs, about SIX washer and dryer sets and innumerable pieces of furniture. At the end of the day my partner was dead beat, but I was feeling good! 4. Eat when you're hungry, not by any clock. 5. Walk daily, I'd suggest at LEAST 30 minutes continuously. I try to do this in addition to my work for peristalsis. 6. Do NOT eat any carbs. 7. I recommend the Trinity of bentonite/caproil/psyllium and GSE or olive leaf extract. I am on the GSE right now and it's the best so far. It's also VERY inexpensive. The bottle I bought holds about 4000 drops: I use about 45-60 drops per day. 8. Take acidophilus daily. Take a mixture of other intestinal flora as well. Follow the instructions as to when to take. I take about 4 or 5 times the amount listed as a dose on my acidophilus as I am not on what would be called a 'maintenance' dosage. These guys have to do battle daily. If you kill the Candida but take no probiotics, there's not much progress. You have to replace the 'good' bacteria constantly to tip the balance in your favour. 9. Eat as much of your food as possible RAW. You need the enzymes. Cooking food KILLS enzymes, period. The temperature to kill enzymes is from 107 Fahrenheit to 117 Fahrenheit as I understand it. 10. Drink lots of pure water, preferably reverse osmosis water. Chlorine kills your intestinal flora. So does caffeine. Try herbal tea, pass on the honey. When our guy go to the shop in the mornings, I sit there and watch them all eat donuts and cookies while I sip my camomile tea. Trust me, it gets easier!! Avoid temptation as much as possible (I know, I know...). Just a note on spirulina: I don't know too much about it, but I think that taking too much at first might produce some adverse reactions as your body starts detoxing. is the one to talk to about this. Maybe you already know all about it, I don't know. Carol, maybe you know everything I've said here, but I want you to know I am concerned personally. I have gone through it to an extent- still am. But you sound exactly like my ex. She used to display ALL the classic signs of Candidiasis, she knew about Candida, but we were unaware of how to do anything about it... you speak of binges: hers were legendary. She would lie and steal to get sugar, literally. She tragically took an overdose of heroin not too long ago. We weren't sure if it were suicide or not. I don't know what made her do it, or what, but I know that her poor health made her life utterly miserable at times. I wish I could have helped her... and it was her discussing Candida that eventually made me realize that I was rife with it as well. Be STRONG! All the strength you've ever needed is inside you. We can help provide the support. I wouldn't be where I am without the support I get here. Guest guest
*THIS MESSAGE* Jonah - should be given to every new candida sufferer that comes on this list. EXCELLENT. The bottom line is that EVERY sufferer is highly INDIVIDUAL outside of some basic candida no no's like sugar, etc. This, I think is where most people struggle and the most messages come on this list saying " what CAN i eat " .... etc. Stick to " live " and " fresh " and test things out ONE by ONE - not in groups, because then you will not know if you can handle it. Excellent advice on eating when you need it... if I followed the 3meals a day plan right now It would never work for me. I eat protein a lot throughout the day. Regarding the SPIRULINA you are right, I did have to 'work' up to higher amounts. It is a LOT of betacarotene to HIT yourself with at once and also cleanses and detoxifies the body. The first few days I took it I remember I took about 15-20 " 00 " size caps and man,,,, my eyes hurt,,, my body hurt and I felt wiped out - spirulina is powerful stuff. I have been doing almost exactly what you are doing (dietwise and treatment wise) ... and feeling rather well - in fact - doing better and better. " THEN " .... the other night there was potatoes for everyone else and I thought that since I hadn't had them in SO long that maybe I 'could' now (since I was doing so much better)? So.... I happily ate them - wolfing them down with plain butter... at the moment - WOW they tasted good. 25 minutes later the headache started. This is interesting because prior to those potatoes my mind had been CLEAR.... and I had had energy. 25 min. after eating these potatoes I turned into a MINDLESS IDIOT. I couldn't think, concentrate or function. My neck hurt and every muscle semed to ACHE. All I wanted to do was go to bed. No i'm not exaggerating - it is just HOW food works for me. I can't live 'with it' and can't 'live without it'. So... yes... I go back to the ones I know and stick to them. Maybe i'll always have to ,,, i don't know - but the trade-offs are worth it. This last two weeks of sticking to the diet and my treatment I've been playing tennis every am with my daughter - (she's very good so its a LOT of running and movement) and i haven't been able to do this kind of work out for about 8 years. Oh - one thing - on the 'enzyme' issue - I found that no matter how much raw things I ate I would not get enough for my depleted system... so I do take additional enzymes - which have made a world of difference. I also am following a candida doc's book regarding candida treatment using amino acid therapy - I take the 9 essential amino acids 2-3 x a day. This too has proved incredibly helpful. GREAT MESSAGE Jonah...
