many ob/gyns' will 'turn their nose up' .. i don't pay no attention to

them....

I was tested by Great Smokies Lab... and it was a stool sample. In the last

10 years or so blood and stool lab tests have been developed to test for

Candida related complex. blood tests were developed over 10 years ago... If

you wish to have a blood or stool test performed, you can do it. If you

don't have a physician - two labs that can help you (give you referrals, or

whatever...in your area) are Meridan Labs at (206)631-8922 and Great Smokies

Lab Client Services at 1-800-522-4762.

Here's some quotes on blood testing and stool testing:

" In blood tests, only the serum, which is part of the fluid portion of the

blood, is used. The serum is tested for the presence of 3 distinct candida

antibodies called " immunoglobulins " which are a class of structurally

distinct antibodies produced in the lymph tissue in response to the invasion

of an antigen, a foreign substance. The antibody molecule performs two

different functions: antigen recognition and antigen destruction. The

antigen in this instance is candida. Even though it lives normally in the

body, it is still a foreign organism. Philip Broughton, VP of Antibody

Assay Labs in Santa Ana, Ca. said that the measurement of antibodies alone

is not a very good marker for active candida overgrowth. One reason is that

some types of antibodies produced by your body are present for only a brief

time, though others remain for many years after the infection has subsided.

This makes it difficult to tell whether you have a current candida infection

or whether you had one that has since gone away.

The serum test performed by Broughton's lab measures two things: the

amounts of immunoglobulin antibodies and the patient's immune complex. His

lab and other labs use a candida-specific immune complex test to

specifically measure candida overgrowth. An immune complex is formed by the

combination of antigens and antibodies. Tests have been designed to measure

specific immune complexes. In the case of the candida-specific immune

complex, the test establishes the presence of an abnormally increased

candida load. Immune complex levels also drop quickly when the load is

decreased and this adds to the value of the test. The immune complex text

measures how the patient's body is clearing out the invading substance, in

this case the candida organism. As the amount of candida increases the

immune complex increases. According to Broughton, this close relationship

between candida and the immune complex is what makes it such a useful test. "

" When testing for Candida overgrowth - Great Smokies lab performs a test

known as a comprehensive digestive stool analysis. Actually this test is

comprised of three different tests: the stool culture, the serum antibody

and a parasitology exam that measures for parasites. This test is a

" Candida intensive " test that measures a lot of other information as well.

The comprehensive digestive stool analysis measures not just yeast and

parasites but also 12 other health variables. These measurements provide

the physician with a wide range of information about the patient's overall

health, including the condition of the mucosa and the gastrointestinal

tract, which runs from the mouth to anus. The doctor at Great Smokies

determines If the patient's sample shows an overgrowth of yeast, and then

her lab tests for drug sensitivity and resistance. The lab then reports on

which drugs or agents will be most effective against the candida and gives

guidelines for doctors to follow. Great Smokies lab notes that a lot of

samples show resistance to some of the drugs used against the yeast. Drug

resistance testing is a fairly standard practice among labs.....not all of

the yeast found in stools is Candida Albicans; other varieties of the

Candida family may also be present. Of the stool yeast cultures Great

Smokies performs, only about 50%

of a little less are positive for yeast overgrowth, and about 80 percent of

that yeast is Candida Albicans.

Although cultures do sometimes test negatively even though there actually is

an overgrowth of Candida, the other two common Candida tests performed by

Great Smokies (serum and parasite) can correct that problem. The problem

with cultures is that the yeast cells that show up in stool samples are

sometimes dead. And since you can't grow live yeast cells from dead ones, a

stool culture occasionally produces negative results. If there is yeast

overgrowth, however both the serum and parasite exams will find it. The

parasite exam inspects the stool samples microscopically and looks for and

reports on several factors, one of which is dead yeast cells. Its important

to do all the tests ifyou are really looking for yeast " .

You can diagnose yourself. Take a large dose of antifungals, such as

several cloves of garlic and/or oil of oregano and/or caprylic acid,

and see if you experience die-off. It will be painful, but it's worth

it to know for sure. No other method of diagnoses matches the trial,

in my opinion, since everyone has *some* candida in their colon and

blood.

If you do have a candida problem, what you should definitely do is

get a mannitol/lactulose test to see if you have " leaky gut. " This

will require dietary and supplemental measures beyond treating the

candida problem. GSL has this test, and they will give you a referral

to a DR in your area who is familiar with their tests. I also

recommend a parasite test.

GSL is at http://www.gsdl.com/

(No I don't work for GSL)

I went to a DO. You can also get a list of doctors who use Great Smokies

tests from their lab. I think that you can request it on the website. Good

luck!

Kristi, good luck finding one. I've been to many

different kinds and none of them want to treat the

systemic kind unless you have AIDS or CANCER. Since

I don't have either, I am not given adequate treatment.

I am trying colloidal sliver-MSM-and any other product

I can instill in my routine. So far, no die-off after

taking CS for 1 week.

How much does all this cost if you can get tested? I do not have health insurance of any kind but I am interested in this. My doctor is very open to helping when he can.
