Guest guest
Dear Anne: Different people respond differently to the various diets. Some do well on high protien and low carbs; others on high carb/low protein. Still others do well on both, but at different times in their life. This is why: There are two main mechanisms at work in metabolism: 1) How fast the digestive system processes food (metabolic rate) and 2) how fast the cells burn the digestive products (the oxidative rate) These processes can be 1 Fast- 2. Fast, or 1. Slow- 2. Slow or a combination 1. Fast- 2.Slow or 1. Slow - 2. Fast. If someone is slow/slow, then they do not need to be putting the equivalent of lots of ' wood logs' (proteins) into their 'furnace' because that will burn up too slow. They need relatively more carbohydrates. That is why these people do best with a greater amount of carbohydrates in their diets. However, some proteins are essential. These people tend to be thin and never seem to gain much weight. Metabolically they are classified as Type 1. If someone is fast/fast, then they do not need to be putting the equivalent of lots of 'paper plates' (carbohydrates) into their 'furnace' because that will burn up too fast. They need relatively more protein (logs wich burn slowly). That is why these people do best with a greater amount of protein in their diets. However, some carbohydrates are essential. These people tend to gain weight easily (because their diets contain more carbohydrates than they need, it burns too fastwhich results in too much glucose in the blood and so the insulin (door keeper to the cells) deposits the excess, as fat, into the cells of the body. Metabolically they are classified as Type 2. Other people are a combination of either fast/slow or slow/fast. Sometimes they do best with more protein, and at other times they do best with more carbohydrates. They are Type 3. Diets like those advocated by Pritikin, Ornish, McDougall and others are low fat/high carb diets. The type 1 slow/slow people rave about how well this type of diet works for them. Diets like those advocated by Atkins, Scarsdale, Carbohydrtae Addict's, Stillman and Endocrine Control are all high protein, low carb diets. These work primarily for the fast burners. A really great little book that goes into a lot more detail about these things is that by Ann Louise Gittleman " Your Body Knows Best " . ISBN 0-671-87591-4 An easy way to determine which is your " metabolic profile " is to do the questionnaire at http://www.mannatech-inc.com/PRDProfile.asp I hope this is helpful Russ >From: " Baird " <mbaird@...> > >> Try high protien and low carbs. The human body isn't made to operate on >such a diet for long periods of time.> Problem is " Darling " hasn't a clue as to how to keep it off. Mannatech's GlycoLean lean body system has solved that problem. Only our Mensa card carrying pal is ignorant of that fact!! The 'set point' problem has actually been solved and is no longer an issue for those who know what they are doing when they start a weight loss program. The Glyco Lean System is designed to optimize health and when that happens, weight stays off. Good for you on changing your diet. The sooner you get off the brown rice the better off you will be. 58% of protein and 10% of good saturated fats turns into carbs or blood sugar in the body. > My only worry with this is some scare story I read about a girl on the > atkins diet who had a heart attack after being on the diet for a month. > Does being on a protein/low carb diet increase your risk and put strain > on your heart? ==>Absolutely not. Here's some information which is enlightening because good teeth and bones is a great indicator of good health: AGRICULTURE & BAD TEETH The Director of the National Museum in Iceland says that it is definitely established that during 600 years, 1200 to 1800 in Iceland, there were no dental cavities. The foods they ate were milk and milk products, mutton, beef and fish. They ate no carbohydrate. The only exception to this was a little moss soup in the summer, but this was a rare " fun food " of little nutritional importance. Two Indian tribes reveal the same thing. The prehistoric Indians of California were vegetarians, unlike most folks of that period, and they had tooth decay. In contrast, the Sioux Indians lived on buffalo meat and were devoid of cavities. The Pueblos worshipped the Corn God, but he was not grateful. They have the most wretched teeth of all the American Indian tribes. They live on corn, squash and beans. The Laplanders, who ate mostly reindeer meat during the 18th century, rarely had cavities. Modern laps have a decay rate of 85% of their teeth. ==>Also Dr. Jan K. in Poland has been curing people of heart disease on high protein and good saturated fats and low carbs for over 30 years - see the website in the Candida Diet Folder which is in the files on Ratios. The best in health, Bee
Guest guest
Hi Bee, I was wondering what is the source of your information here? I didn't know that California Indians were vegetarians. There were several tribes of course. I worked on an archaeological project with the Cahuilla Indians. They ate meat. ==>Absolutely not.
