Thank you so much , $670 for 28 days would be amazing! I'll check it out.

Local lab is exactly the right solution. Alas, no family members except for

some loud conures and quacking ducks, but I can change around the nursing

schedule once I'm up and running.

And Valarie, $326 would be amazing too!!!! You are right it is Rocephin, not

Ceftin. I would love a list of what you got... my email is drcfrb@...,

but as you requested, I'll send you a personal email as well.

I'm so happy and impressed about the people who have researched this and then

outline the steps so carefully. Thank you all for sharing your discoveries. I

dont have the energy or focus to do all the work you did, so thank you so much

for being so generous! I will use the ideas and see what I can do... Isnt it

incredible how much it all costs?

Weekly nursing visits can get very pricey. See if you have other options, like

your doc's office helping you out on your regular visits, or have the nurse

teach a family member to do the bandage changes. For the regular blood draws,

your doc should be able to give you a standing order to use at a local lab

without the need for a nurse to do this (Quest, LabCorp or whatever is close to

you).

I found that InfuServeAmerica has lower prices if you buy in larger quantities,

i.e. 28 days worth is in the $670 range with all necessary supplies (meds,

saline, iv admin sets, flushes, bandage change kits, etc). Call and talk to them

about pricing.

Otherwise, getting a-la-carte from pharmacies can be an option, although not all

pharmacies will carry IV meds so you may need to call around. Also, not all

pharmacies are authorized to ship to all states, so be sure to ask.

Hi

I'm looking for a source for the bags of saline (150 or 250 ml)

(?sodium chloride .9%) and IV admin sets --- you mention

InfuserveAmerica, but then later say you know a place where it costs

1/2 as much -- can you tell me who has them cheaper?

I've been ordering some supplies from Allegromedical (mostly flushes &

tegaderm) but I need a source for Non-vented IV sets (Catalog No.

B402, 70 inches - Codan US Corp) -- is that what you mean by IV admin

sets?

It might be that I'm not using the right search term at Allegro. I

finally found the PICC line crescents w/posts, but it helped having a

package so I could use the specific catalog number & company name

(Statlock). I couldn't believe that piece was $9.xx EACH. I've only

changed that part about 3 times over 5+ months.

I'm doing IV clindamycin and IV zithromax and I'm trying to cut the

costs on my Vit C IV's. So, if I could order the bags of saline

(sodium chloride) and bottles of C to make my own IV vitamin C that

would help a lot! Does anybody have a source for the Vitamin C to

make the Vit C IV's?

This has been a helpful discussion to show that it really doesn't need

to cost thousands per month to have IV abx. As long as I can keep my

PICC line in place and clean, I'm going to try to keep it as long as

possible and try to switch to making my own Vitamin C IV's myself.

My doc's office only charges $125 for a 50 gram Vit C IV (plus other

vitamins, B, mag chloride, etc), but I wonder if I could get the stuff

myself and do it even cheaper.... He says he's doing them practically

at cost and I can kind of believe that because a 50 gram C IV uses an

entire bottle of the injectable Vitamin C, plus the bag of saline

(and cost of nurse, prep, overhead..)

The first IV vitamin C I ever got I was charged approx. $250.

Thanks again for further info & more detail. Doing this directly thru

my doc's office w/o a home health care service I'm using way less

supplies than you list.

I'm on my 2nd PICC line since the around June 1st, but I've never

changed the extender line. Except when I got the 2nd PICC line

inserted I got a new extender then. (My 1st PICC line got clotted off

(despite using heparin) and the nurse at the ER blew it open when she

tried to flush w/saline because she didn't want to wait for the doc to

write an order for heparin.)

I'm only on my 2nd cap/valve for the end of the line - and that's only

because the 1st one broke. I've only changed the StatLock about 3

times in 5+ months. They just won't stick after about 6-8 weeks. My

current one is in tatters right now. But I did manage to order 1 from

Allegro last night. I'm not sure what type of PICC line I have - the

part the comes out of my arm is royal blue.

I'm flushing w/5 ml of saline followed by 2 to 5 mls of heparin

depending on how it feels.

In all this time I only recently started noticing some limited

improvement. So, I'm not sure if longer treatment will help, or if I

should give up on IV abx tx. So far, I tolerate the IV abx fairly

well, no herxes that I can tell but I wonder if it really saturates

the tissue, or if I'm only killing whatever is in the bloodstream....

I guess I will sign off now, I need to try to sleep. I had another

really crappy day today (well, yesterday now) sigh..... thanks all

for all the sharing of info -- it's been really helpful...

Dear Valarie

Thanks for posting in such detail. I think this discussion has been

VERY helpful to show that it's not really that expensive to do IV abx,

if you can kind of DIY (do-it-yourself).

I guess I'm doing 3rd world IV and I'm lucky I'm still alive (LOL).

With only changing my Statlock 3 times in 5 months and doing my

dressing changes myself w/o gloves, etc... Plus I'm using the same

extension since the PICC line was installed and I re-use my IV tubing

for 24 hours - instead of using a new one w/each bag. I get away with

that because I try to time my doses so I can do some back to back,

hanging the 2nd bag right after the 1st one is done. Or, I keep the

tubing connected while I'm sleeping or because I'm in bed nearly 24/7

anyway.

When you listed the detail of what you buy the format came out

distorted (and I couldn't open the XLS spreadsheet that (you?) or

someone else? sent....

I will include your message below mine and try to manually fix the

formatting to match the headers your included. Hopfeully, that will

come thru when I post.

Thanks again!

Kendra,

When I first had a PICC line and insurance covered visiting RNs for weekly

dressing changes, equipment was delivered to me including dressing change kits.

Well when I switch to less expensive means to get the meds & equipment, my LLMDs

office offered to do every other week's dressing change (I had to visit my LLMD

every 2 weeks while on IV meds) for no extra charge, but I had to bring the

dressing change kit. My LLMDs methods were a bit different: they did not want

the statlock changed unless it was coming loose and said it should last for many

months. There is a risk of pulling on the line while removing the statlock..

And they also didn't want anything covering the entry site (the visiting RN

service had been providing and changing a " biopatch " which covered the site

almost entirely. When the LLMDs nurse pulled it off she noticed some drainage

and stated that it was better to only put a clear transparent sterile dressing

over the site--that way you can see if there are any changes.

So don't feel guilty about not changing the statlock every week. As long as

you don't get it wet, one should last for many months.

Good luck.

Thanks so much KIm. I am going to study this... so much to learn. Something

the nurse suggested worked for me - when the site was looking angry and feeling

tight, he suggested a heating pad. It feels much better now and the red has

gone, but I like your suggestion about the dressing and will keep that in mind.

Thanks again,
