Guest guest
I just was diagnosed with Lyme 2 months ago, no co-infections. I have been really sick for 7 years before dx. I was treated in AZ for 2 months with IV zithromax and lots of natural alternatives. I was feeling alittle better, but did lots of herxing during treatment. I have been home now and my dr here in jersey is taking over my case. I cant handle oral abx so he agreed to have IV's done at my local hospital. My primary says that zithromax is not a good antibiotic to treat lyme because you can become resistant to it. He is saying rocephin is a way better antibiotic for treating lyme??? I am confused ....I am allergic to penicillin so cant take doxy. Has anyone been cured/ or in remission on any certain antibiotics??? Thanks, Liz
Guest guest
Doxy is NOT a penicillin. Guest guest
I'd encourage you to get your hands on the Burrascano treatment guidelines, which many LLMDs follow some version of. Lyme exists in two, possibly three, different forms in the body: spirochetes, which respond mainly to cephalosporins and penicillin-family drugs; L-forms (also known as intracellular Lyme) that invade cells and basically hide inside them, and which respond best to second- and third-generation macrolides like Zithromax or Biaxin; and a cyst form that can lie dormant in the body for up to 2-3 years, and is very hard to crack -- though Flagyl and its relatives, along with Diflucan, are thought to soften it so the germs can be killed. The Lyme organism can switch between these forms with relative ease, which means that if you hit them with Zithromax, you'll clear out the intracellular Lyme, and some of it will die off; but the rest will escape by turning into cysts or free spirochetes, where the zithro can't touch them. LLMDs believe that you can only get good cures by hitting all three forms at once (the " nowhere to run, nowhere to hide " strategy), which means taking several types of antibiotics in combo and switching individual antibiotics in and out every few weeks or few months (opinions vary). Contrary to your GP's thinking, " resistance " really isn't an issue; Lyme doesn't tend to become resistant in the traditional sense, but it does change forms to avoid any given single antibiotic. The solution isn't to stop with that antibiotic; it's to add in other antibiotics that will hit them in these other forms, too. Under this model, even IV zithro isn't going to get you to a cure. Rocephin is a very good broad-spectrum antibiotic that's likely to be much more effective (if you're only going to take a single abx, this would probably be the one), and I'd take your GP's advice on this. But you really might want to find yourself a proper LLMD and get on a full-scale combo treatment. Your body will only accept antibiotics for so long; don't waste that valuable window doing partial treatments. Guest guest
Liz, Hi...Our son was treated for 6 weeks on IV Therapy for Lyme when he was about 3 and that was six years ago. He seems fine now. He did well on the Rocephin until he had some mild allergic reactions to it. He and I both got bitten with ticks near Lyme, CT and do know people who have gotten better with antibiotics. ________________________________ From: Whitfield <starlightvisions@...> Sent: Fri, August 27, 2010 8:25:56 PM Subject: [ ] Anyone get well on antibiotics?
