Guest guest
The other ideas may not be relative to DS... but other kinds of disABILITIES as well. 1. Open a small matchbox with tight fitting mittens on. (Putting a piece of candy in the matchbox makes it worth trying for) 2. Read a piece of paper (I usually write " It is harder to read if you have Dislexia " on the paper that they have to read) looking at it through a mirror. 3. Put on ankle weights on ONE leg and run a short race. ..... hmmm... all my teaching tolerance stuff is at my house (not dorm)... so I can't remember the rest. Sorry! BTW, , I got your newsletters and they are BEAUTIFUL!!!! The graphics are REALLY amazing! By far, the most beautiful newletter I have seen! Can I send a international money order to you for the calendars?? How much would it be? Guest guest
>international money order to you for the calendars?? >How much would it be? Hi Sara; We get the calendars from the Canadian Down Syndrome Society (1999 year Nicala & were in it). The cost is only $5.00 Canadian...which would probably be something like $3.40 American. You could either send a Canadian money order or use your credit card....or even a cheque for $3.40 American would probably work. I would suggest that you go directly to the CDSS to order it since you would avoid having to go thru me. http://home.ican.net/~cdss/mainframeset.html

Guest guest
Mine is not as supportive. It seems I am always defending BFL and my enthusiasm. It's his negativity that I would like to change! Well, and maybe *minor* changes to the physique. He's actually not in bad shape physically. Guest guest
I've run into this perdicament a few times in coaching. My advice is to lead by example. If it comes down to it, don't even talk about BFL directly anymore. Just eat and exercise the program and let your actions and changing physique, improved confidence and presentation of yourself speak for you. - In a message dated 20-Dec-00 06:00:29 PM Eastern Standard Time, cdautah1@... writes: Mine is not as supportive. Guest guest
Hi Sara, I had no idea that Elie was so long in toilet training for BM's. We are going through this for Matt, too. He has amazing control, but chooses to hold until he can have a " pull up " . He will ask for and get his own pull up-sometimes not getting it on " straight " , which is then a BIG mess. Since he is home, for now, DH decided that this would be a wonderful thing to correct, while he is here! But DH is NOT the one who is here enforcing this order. A couple of nights ago, I ran out of pull ups. Matt was having a tough day, with 3-4 small smears of BM in his underwear. The last time he did this, I told him he would have to sit on the toilet until I got back from the store (About 10-15 minutes at the most), and left my oldest daughter and husband in charge of the situation. They said he willing sat there, until it became apparant that he had to " go " NOW, and kept trying to get up. He was clearly very uncomfortable with the idea of sitting on the toilet until this happened. They firmly held him there, he yelled, and released. After all of this, he was very proud of himself! With this success behind us, we tried again the next day. I wrestled with him for 20 minutes before calling in the back-up troops. He tried to slam my daughter's head into the counter top! With this, we decided that a much more " Gentle " approach was needed. I gave him the pull-up, with the instruction that he was not to leave the bathroom. Maybe, if we can get him in the habit of only pooping in the bathroom, we can get him to the toilet with the pull up on, and eventually with it off. How did you finally accomplish this with Elie? Guest guest
<We started by having him GET clothes from his new dresser - we got a long low 4 drawer dresser. We were able to separate his clothes more easily in this dresser than his previous chest of drawers where the drawers were shallow and some so high he couldn't see into them. We divided his dresser in this fashion: pj's and bathing suits, long pants, shirts (easy as he only wears short sleeved shirts, shorts, underwear and socks. Sweats and sweaters are in his closet and he really doesn't touch those as he hasn't worn long sleeves or sweaters in 2 years. Sweat pants will be moved into his drawe with his long pants. I always sort his clothes and fold them. For months I have been sorting his clothes in his room into 4 stacks for the four drawers and worked at getting him to put them in the appropriate drawers. For a couple of weeks he would sort of help me. Then this week, I put the basket in his room to put away when I finished another task. When I came back, the clothes were in the drawers!!! I never really thought he would take the initiative. Now we will move on to bed making - I gave up on that after backward chaining for 2 years but I guess we will try again. br>

Sara, Elie's Mom - 16 yo and just discovering friends ----Original Message Follows---- From: smilinggail@... Guest guest
also puts his clothes away, one thing i have found to hlep is the pic/word symbol on the drawer, eg the pants drawer has the pant pic/word on it, covered with clear contact paper. I am working on this for the kitchen because since the washing and rinsing hasnt been going well(likes to play in water, and his poor fms doesnt get dishes clean) I have the boys put the dishes away, and nathan needs constant reminders so my weekend is going to be busy, lol. Oh, we hang nathans shirts up in his closet, and a way we figured out so nathan can do it and does with prompts, i lay the pile of shirts flat on the side next to his closet, then he gets a hanger and brings it to the shirt, slips it in while its laying on the bed and the wala, its on the hanger, and he just hangs them up, yaaaaa, his dress pants have been more of a struggle, so i let him put those in his dresser for now. shawna.
