How did it start? How did you feel? Dear : I've been having blood sugar problems along with my AIH since 1998. I've been in to see an endocrinologist and he called me 'Glucose Intolerant.' That's not quite diabetic, but sort of the stage before. I also have trouble with my blood sugar getting too low. For me, it started with dizzy spells. I'd get a sort of all over cold wash feeling like I might need to faint, and then it would feel like my face was real flushed (it usually was). I had an episode not too long ago where I felt terrible, like I was going to faint and like I was falling while I was sitting down. Very scary. I was visiting my daughter when she was in the hospital. They were running a health fair that day, so I went and had them check my blood sugar. It was 193. I've talked to my doc since then and he wants me to have another diabetic work up with and endocrinologist. I've never had a vericeal bleed, so don't know what that feels like, but it seems that the top priority would be to make sure that's not happening again. Then ask your doc about some diabetic testing, or have him refer you to an endocrinologist. A lot of the meds that we have to take can cause your blood sugar to react. Prednisone is one and some of the diuretics out there (spironoloctone for one) can, too. Hope this was helpful. Guest guest
Kathy, Yes, It has been helpful. They just started me on Spironalactone after the GI bleed. What you described is exactly the way I have felt for the last 2 days. Dizzy, fainty and cold all over. I've checked my temperature and that's normal. I will question the Hepatologist when he calls back about the Spironalactone. They put me on this because I had been on Lasix and Potassium before the bleed. They indicated that the Potassium could be an irritating to my GI tract and stopped that and my Fosomax and started the Spironalactone. Next week they want to add a Beta Blocker but I feel so bad now that I just don't want to try anyting new until I figure out what's going on. They told me that when things calm down they will start me on some type of IV infusion for the osteoporosis. You are right. I get so discouraged at times because I know the meds that I must take to control the AIH all have side effects which are horrible but what do you do? You take this pill to controll the side effects of this pill and your list gets longer and longer. Currently I take Imuran, Prednisone, Spironalactone, Floic Acid, Prevacid, Lasix and a multivitamin. Now they want to add a beta blocker and my BP is low to start off with, but because of the portal hypertention I don't have a lot of choice. So the list gets longer and longer. Thanks so much for the info. I'll check with him re: the Spironalactone. It's good to know at least that what I'm feeling is something someone else has experienced. . Dear : The spironolactone is supposed to be potassium sparing, so make sure that you don't drink Gatorade or take potassium supplements while on it. Looking at your list of meds, I noticed the lasix along with the spironolactone. Since both of these are diuretics, you have to make sure that you don't get dehydrated, too. The dizzy spells that you describe are hard to discern from those that occur with dehydration. Make sure to drink LOTS of fluids. Water, decaf tea, fruit juice mixed with water (never more than 1/4 cup of the juice), etc. Avoid anything caffeinated, because it can exacerbate dehydration. If your heart seems to flutter high and fast during your dizzy spells, get into the ER to make sure you aren't dehydrated. Hope you're feeling better soon! Guest guest
Thanks Kathy. I will. I don't feel that I'm dehydrated but I have been pushing fluids. Potassium looked ok on lab values. I was worried about that as I had had some leg cramps at night and they doubled the Lasix after the Bleed. It had not been working well. Still had lots of fluid but after they doubled it boy does it work now. Thanks for being concerned. My son is on his way home now and if I don't get to feeling better by tomorrow I think I'll just go to my GP. I do want to wait for Hepatologist call though. They have been so good to me. They call almost immediately. Will keep you informed.
Guest guest
, I was reading somewhere that it is quite common to suffer symptons of hyploglucemia with AIH. Don't know if that is helpful. Brett [ ] Feeling horrible Hey guys,I feel horrible today. I went yesterday and had labs drawn. I feel very lightheaded and dizzy. After the Variceal bleed on 12-5-01 I though maybe this was happening again. Had full chemistry panel and CBC with diff, as well as protime taken. All came back preatty good for me. HGB was 10.9 which was up from hospital stay. LFT's were almost normal. (High 40's). Protime is out though INR 1.3 and Prothrombin time 14.5. What is bothering me the most though is my Glucose is slowly going up each time I have lab's drawn in Hospital it was 123 and yesterday it was 153. Have phone call in to Hepatologist RE: Labs as they were drawn here locally. Nurse at Hepatologist office said that Glucose of 153 should not make me feel dizzy to look for signs of bleeding again. There have been none. My question here is for those of you who have developed Diabetes after being diagnosed with AIH. How did it start? How did you feel? For those of you who have had transplants how did this effect the recooperation from your transplants?I am waiting for Hepatologist to call back. I have an appointment with him on 1-7-02. My local GI doc is gone until after the first of the year so I'm a little nervous. As Hepatologist office is 2 hours away, unless I have a really bad situation I guess if I get in trouble I'll try to get to his office. Just feeling a little nervous as I have felt so rotten yesterday and today. Please advise RE: the Diabetes problem. Thank's

Guest guest
That is possible. I remember a few years go, when I actually went off the antibiotic completely then started another type protocol, that I felt MUCH worse during that time - the body gets used to abx and being without them alone can make you feel " horrible " - that is only my experience. I hope you feel better soon. - Glen from NJ At 03:45 AM 12/27/2005 +0000, you wrote: >I was out of my antibiotic for a week and started feeling horrible. >Do you think being out of the antibiotic has made me feel this way? > > >
Guest guest
That is exactly what happened to me. When I restarted the antibiotic, I went back to feeling better within a matter of days. Hope you feel better soon! Jeannie mom_sloan <mom_sloan@...> wrote:I was out of my antibiotic for a week and started feeling horrible. Guest guest
I noticed the same thing last time I had C. Difficile. Was taken off abx and taking only Flagyl for 3 wks. By 2nd week off abx I could barely walk then when I could go back on abx I was ok again. > > I was out of my antibiotic for a week and started feeling horrible. > Do you think being out of the antibiotic has made me feel this way? >
