He gets to the point where he does throw up.....makes me so angry!!! The problem now, though, is they are telling me this has to do with his GERD. His years of throwing up may have damaged his esophagus.....like an anorexic patient. It's the acid coming back up all these years. Take care. Guest guest
Margaret tell me more. So does the acid come back up when our kids do this cough/gag/vomit thing?? I didn't even think of that. Angel had lots of reflux probs when younger. She has finally stopped them, but will still occasionally choke on reflux. The gag/cough/vomit thing is new for her, as in it is related to her not liking the sight, smell or taste of something. She does hang her head over the toilet and almost vomits over the smell of her BM's. And she can't stand the feeling of nasal mucous running down the back of her throat. Makes her vomit. We have a farm and she will no longer play near the barns as they smell. She gags over pictures of things she doesn't like, bugs, the moon, etc. Wonder why they respond this way? please share any info you have on this. thanks, Cheryl Re: gagging > < Hi Gail, > > Does this count????? Guest guest
hi everyone....first my apologies, seems lately that the only time i write is when i need to ask something! I can't really keep up with all the postings...seems like there is so much going on here that my head is spinning. the conversations about GERD have gotten my attention. nick has had several episodes lately of throwing up for no apparent reason. he then continues with whatever he was doing and eats and drinks normally the rest of the day...no other symptoms of being ill. has also been trying much harder to communicate lately and is exerting his independence, seems like he is getting frustrated and then hits himself in the head with his palm. we're trying to figure out if the 2 things are related or if any of it could at all be related to the change in his diet (still all pureed stuff but no wheat or gluten which does seem to be causing some very positive developmental changes) anyone with any similar experiences? for those kids with GERD, what were the initial symptoms? how about the head hitting...causes? how to stop it? welcome to all the new members...thank goodness for this group! hugs and prayers to all those having difficult times and thumbs up to anyone having a run of good days! cheri Re: gagging < Hi Gail, > Does this count????? Guest guest
Hi Cheri, Brook started hitting himself in the head a lot because of the pain from the GERD. He was also very frustrated and miserable. GERD is very painful and you can't tell how frequently the acid is coming up into his esophagus by the amount of vomiting or spitting up. I defintely think the two things are related. That is what we first noticed with Brook, that he was hitting himself in the head a lot and very frustrated. We took him to a pediatric gastroenterologist and had many tests done, but it was obvious in Brook's case. Not every child has an obvious case. We tried medication first, but that was not enough in his situation. He had a more severe case, as he was spitting up all the time. Guest guest
Marisa, thanks so much for answering. I have found that when I take Nick to the doctors it really counts for something when I have info from other situations to tell them. I have mentioned this group before to them and they have listened. Thank you! Cheri Re: Re: gagging Hi Cheri, Brook started hitting himself in the head a lot because of the pain from the GERD. Yes, he DOES......he also wakes up during the night from the sleep apnea, gagging and choking, but he does this during the day too as well and it's driving me crazy.....he sits in the back seat while I'm driving and goes into a fit and I'm trying to look at him through the rear mirror and try to stay on the road. He also is getting a bad habit of putting fingers in his mouth...you know, like a little child does when they're teething?? Wonder if he's sticking his little fingers in too far and almost throwing up from that????? I'll continue to watch. Also, it's back to nose drops and the nebulizer for congestion. I told the pulmo doc about all this, and she's ordered a swallow function which will be done end of July, with all the other tests.

Guest guest
.... It takes time for things to leave his stomach. So as long as there is something churning around in his stomach, then there's stuff that can come back up. It's not necessarily immediate. So are you telling me he's gagging and choking and he hasn't eaten *anything* or had *anything* to drink for 3 hours? If so, I might buy that he's choking on air....Of course...stranger things have been known to happen. j At 03:10 PM 6/18/2002 EDT, you wrote: >In a message dated 6/17/02 6:30:53 PM Pacific Daylight Time, > writes: > > >> Do you think his reflux is back? Guest guest
Honestly , I don't think any of us can guess for sure what is causing to gag/choke over the Internet. But he has a history of reflux, so this is a logical suggestion, that's all. All the possibilities are logcial. What you need is some one person to really do a head to toe of it all. Could be the trachea, could be reflux, could be allergies, could be....ACK! I'd probalby list all the possibilities for someone and ask them where to start. List all yoru concerns for ...all of them...and get your PCP to head up the investigation. Sometimes one thing triggers another or a learned behavior or or or...... Without being there or seeing and wihtout knowing what informatino is already available, none of us know. We can only suggest and guess. Guest guest
I am in the same boat when it comes to gagging. This is of no help because I cannot remember the details. But......there is one chiro in my town named Dr. Ibarguen who is certified in muscle testing and specializes in neuro stuff. Several years ago on my first visit, she checked my gag reflex and said it was the strongest she had ever seen.....as I dived for her waste basket. She said it is related to some component of brain function.....I just can't remember which. If you needed to know, you could call her office and ask. I think she has a web site too.
