Guest guest
Changing the Picture of Lyme: A Documentary Film UNDER OUR SKIN takes viewers into the lives of Lyme sufferers struggling to find answers and a cure. We watch a set of representative, yet diverse characters battle not only the disease, but a broken health care system. While the popular perception of Lyme disease is that it's a trivial joint-related problem that is easily cured with a few weeks of antibiotics, our characters tell a radically different story. They are forced to live with crushing fatigue, pain, and severe neurological problems for months to years, while searching for a diagnosis and effective treatment. As they visit specialist after specialist, so many are told that their symptoms are stress related or " all in their heads. " Most are misdiagnosed for years with incurable conditions such as chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, lupus, multiple sclerosis, or ALS. And when these patients finally receive a Lyme diagnosis and a path to wellness, they ask: Why are front-line physicians so ignorant of classic Lyme symptoms and the true size of the epidemic? Why does it take the average Lyme patient more than 3 years and $60,000 to be diagnosed? Once diagnosed, why are many physicians and insurers refusing to provide sufferers with lifesaving treatment? Produced and directed by Emmy-nominated filmmaker Andy Abrahams , UNDER OUR SKIN is a 90-minute investigative and human-interest story. It will be the first documentary on the subject to reach a national audience. By journeying deep into the microscopic and macrocosmic world of Lyme, the film uncovers the profound human, scientific, and political dimensions of Lyme disease. Intimately following the lives and work of extraordinary Lyme sufferers, researchers, and political figures, the film reveals and defines the extent of this human tragedy, illuminating its far-reaching shadows, and offering hope to those suffering or yet to be diagnosed.
