Guest guest Posted March 24, 2000 Report Share Posted March 24, 2000 Hi Charlie and Rena, No, Josh hasn't had shingles. But just last month we happened to be talking about it with the rheumatologist. She explained it to us and told us to watch for any abnormal looking changes on this certain area on Josh's chest. He had been complaining of some soreness there. Different from chosteochondritis (sp?). And it wasn't bruised, just bothersome. Fortunately, nothing developed. And the pain went away. What exactly are the symptoms that Elliot's experiencing? How is it to be treated? I hope it clears up soon. And that Elliot starts feeling better. How old was Elliot when he had the Chicken pox? I was told that since I had the chicken pox before a year old, I didn't get full immunity. The weird thing is that I only got them on half my body. I've gone on-line, but I don't find an answer to that question. I've asked a doctor, through his easily confused assistant, but I want to double-check on my own. My husband has shingles, diagnosed today. (Fortunately, it isn't bothering him physically. He's very worried about contagion for me.) I've had chickenpox and am taking 100 mg of Imuran daily. The assistant was unaware that exposure to shingles while taking immunosuppressants might present a problem. She says my doctor told her there was no concern because I've had chickenpox. I want to be SURE. She's made mistakes before. I'll try to get through to my gp, but if any of you have ever run into this and have some information, please let me know. Thanks. So go figure???? Did he see a doc.? My husband was given a med. and they didn't get very bad. I can't remember the name and neither can he. Shingles is supposed to be an adult disease, but he got it. I was told that you must have had chicken pox to get shingles. I don't know if it is contagious or not, but the school would not let him attend until it cleared up. It is very painful. Aveeno baths and benedryl helped him. They are both caused by a Herpes type virus. If it works like chicken pox, there is an approximate 10-14 day incubation period where the person is the most contagious before he breaks out. I would insist upon asking the doctor directly instead of going through his assistant. I sincerely hope you don't catch it. I hope your husband recovers soon. My Dad just went through a 3 month shingles episode and my internist said the same thing as far as I was concerned in an immunocompromised state. Of course, we do tend to behave a little differently once we start on immunosuppressants (I wear a mask if I have to take my kids to the doctors office or anywhere I may be close to coughing, sneezing people). Your husband will need a lot of love and support as shingles can be quite painful. I send some extra prayers to you and him. I was so sick and miserable. I hope your husband or you have to got through that. I have also been told that I could get them again. This is just my own personal experience. Guest guest Posted May 24, 2001 Report Share Posted May 24, 2001 Harper Hi...its been awhile since I have had the time to get on here and see what is going on with everyone.....I was just checking the subject lines to see what was up when I saw yours....on shingles....and had to respond...I see that others also have gotten to you but figured I would answer anyways and get to say Hello.... Last fall Ty had shingles....he can home from school and showed me some sores on his chest and that they bothered him....they didn't really look like anything special and so a couple of days go by and he comes home from school holding hids shirt away from his skin...says it hurts...but they still don't look like anything special....another couple of days go by and he comes home and says his teacher says it shingles...which the teacher has had a couple of times and had again...The teacher knowing what he had should not have been in school....but besides that....I call the Tys doctors and they tell me to get him to the ER.,...so off we go.. 2 hours to the hosp and they admit him....it was shingles and they put him on 3 different IV antibiodics....remember Ty takes alot of meds...including cyclosporine...and pred...We were there for about a week....They are very painful....and you can get them again.... The teacher was pretty much safe with most of the students....because their immune system could fight it off...But I was rather ticked....he is the band teacher and has had Ty all four years and knows about all the stuff he has been thru....I don't expect him to know medical info...like the meds that Ty is on...but I thought he should have at least been more responsible....There are plently of kids on pred for asthma.... Ty had the chicken pox when he was about 3 when his sister brought them home from school....and shingles is the same virus...so if you are exposed to chicken pox you can also get shingles.... My mother in law was a diabetic....and suffered many times with shingles.....they say that diabetics don't feel pain....and I have seen her burn herself with the iron...till it blistered and she didn't even know that she did it...and other things like that....but the shingles....she felt them....meaning they are really painful....I know Ty really suffered with them...they even put him on a morphine shot to help..... I hope your husband does not have to suffer too long....and I would stay away if I were you....or at least call your doctor and let them know.... I would also wash his clothes separtly for a while....Not that I am saying he is gross but with the meds you take you don't need to take any chances.... Usually I get them the worst now whenever I have dental work. The herpes zoster virus that causes them lives mostly in the tissues in and around the mouth. You have to take it for 10 days and for me, the medicine to suppress an outbreak is nearly as bad or worse than the shingles. I felt very ill on the medicine! I was in a chronic, long-term shingles outbreak I couldn't shake for the past six months until I began taking the Red Algae. And the pain subsided within a few days without any other effort on my part. What I've learned (before the Red Algae) is: decrease stress, eliminate or keep to a minimum, consumption of nuts, nut butters, chocolate, caffeinated products, too much sunshine. These all increase the arginine levels in the body and shingles thrive with high arginine. The antagonist to arginine is lysine, so one of the fastest way to cut the pain of shingles is to start taking high doses of lysine every few hours as soon as you feel the stingining pain. And, whatever you do, don't take acetominophen for the pain of shingles! It feeds the herpes zoster virus! I took acetiminophen for years for shingles pain and didn't understand why I always felt worse on " pain killers " until I read that tidbit in a natural healing book! So, take ibuprofen for shingles pain--with food if it bothers your stomach--but it will help you get through the pain of a fresh outbreak. I also use a gel called " Arthritis Pain Relief Gel " made by Boericke and Toeffel, the homeopathic company that cuts the pain of dental shingles. Just to let you know shingles is also related to chicken pox...so if you have had chicken pox you would be predisposed to shingles. I know that stress can bring about terrible bouts of it. Guest guest Posted October 23, 2004 Report Share Posted October 23, 2004 i was told by the nurse to take a pill in the morning, 2 days later i found something that said i should take 3 a day. i called the dr's office to verify this. after taking my 3rd pill last night i felt very wierd fluttering feeling in my chest. i could not fall asleep. i called the dr. got in today. sat in the office from 11:15-12:50. this dr did not think i have shingles. I had it a few months after my arthritis symptoms began, but before I was diagnosed with RA. I wonder how many others of you here have had shingles. Does having an autoimmune disease make us more susceptible to shingles? As I understand it, it's a form of 'Chicken Pox', and affects the nerve endings. That's about all I think I know about it, but could be way off base. Shingles in a person with rheumatoid arthritis are thought to occur due to the use of the drugs used to treat RA which suppress the immune system - corticosteroids, MTX, and the biologics, for example. But I guess with RA starting, my immune system was out of whack. My breast cancer was diagnosed about a year after the RA symptoms began, and I've always felt that there was a connection there, too. I had shingles 8 years ago when I moved from a place I had lived in for almost 15 years. I was looking forward to having a home of my own - but there was a lot of physical and psychological stress- I thought they were originally bee stings.
