Guest guest
Hi Betty, Adding vinegar might make your brew more acidic but that would not be the same as if it had fermented itself. Sounds to me like you need an entirely new Kombucha Colony and some starter KT. You can leave the one you have brewing and see if it sours by itself but I wouldn't add vinegar because that will keep you from knowing whether or not it worked by itself,- which it should. Guest guest
Jackie, Welcome to the group. I remember how good it felt to connect with people that were experiencing similar problems when I suddenly found my back was not actually going to be " as good as new " for the rest of my life, as promised by my original surgeon. It's somewhat stunning for folks who had little problem with their back after the original surgery and who assumed that we would never have problems again and then wham!....you are suddenly as vulnerable as you were as a teen. All that said, please try to relax. You have consulted a surgeon or doctor who apparently has at least determined that whatever is going on with you is not an emergency. It rarely is. That is good. It means you literally have all the time you need to decide about what you want to do going forward. You don't say what you actual physical condition or pain levels are right now...but generally speaking, I believe that successful revision surgeries can happen well into a patients later 60's...so try to remind yourself to take things very slowly. We have got tons of information here...some of which you will have to use to sleuth a little further as your own situation warrants. Most of us are in the USA, although we have members from around the world. The trick is that you may or may not have access to medical help that really is ready to help you...and I don't know what options you might have for financial/insurance coverage if you leave SA. I am guessing that is going to be your big hurdle. I will say unequivicably that I would not let a surgeon do surgery on me that has the track record you outlined. If you go back into the cyberworld you will find many patients in the US from the mid 90's who were the guine pigs, if you will, of flatback revision. I think its fair to say that their outcomes have not been as good as those that came later. The learning curve on this surgery is high. It is a very complex surgery and really, the surgeon only has one shot at getting it right. Subsequent surgeries can happen, but every time they change your anatomy it permanantly changes your future options...and the risks for an unsuccessful outcome rise. I often refer folks to the Scoliosis Research Society (www.srs.org) for a starting place to locate help. It is an international society, and members must devote considerable amounts of their practice to deformity surgery, so at least you know that doctors on their list have a deep interest in the subject, if not the exact skills you need. Unfortunately I see only one listing for SA...although he does list specialty areas you need. I am guessing this is the guy you have already seen, but if not, he may be someone to consult: Dunn, FCS (SA) Consultant Spine Surgeon PO Box 30086 Tokai 7966 South Africa Phone: 27 21 7628794 Adolescent, Adult Scoliosis, Aging Spine, Degenerative Conditions, Juvenile/Infantile As you delve further into this we can get to more of your questions. The surgery is difficult and the recovery is long....but it is possible to travel in the aftemath of surgery...many of us have travelled some distance to have our surgeries. It just requires patience and planning. As I said before...just try to take a deep breath. You have time. You are among friends and we will help you through this mountain of information. Guest guest
Jackie, Well...DrBoachie is well known to all of us. I would say he is one of the pioneers of finding a good fix for flatback and he is highly regarded internationally. He practices, as you know, at the Hospital for Special Surgery in NYC but also does a mission to Africa ...although I dont know if he will be anywhere near you. I believe this is around the time of the year he is over seas. It would be worth a call to the NYC office if you don't hear anything soon. I had my second opinion with him and was very happy I did. Many here on this group have had revision with him. Please let us know whatever you do next! Take Care, Cam

(Please forgive me for being me for being a little graphic...It's not a pretty subject, be forewarned..) I am completely constipated!! My stomach is very descended and I feel like I'm ready to go, but when I try, it's not productive. It's also difficult to sit there and relax because I've had post-surgical leg pain that gets so bad when seated. After 5 minutes, I start moving my legs around but it makes it almost impossible to be calm on the toilet. In the hospital I began colace and a stool stimulator, but up until I left I was just passing a lot of gas and mucus. Once I got to the Metrolofts on Tuesday, I've been continuing the colace and tons of water. I've also added prunes, salads, fruits, & activia yogurt. Last night, after many times of trying to move my bowels, I was a little successful. However, that was the one and only time thus far, yet I've felt like I've needed to go ALL DAY today! Besides the hemorrhoids that have now developed , I now have another reason to be sore while seated. I know I may sound a little unclear, hence the meds, the culprit of this issue at ahnd, but any input or advice wouldl be so greatly appreciated!!! Guest guest
I'm so sorry you are dealing with this!!  Just what you need. I had the exact same - that TPN is like glue, on top of the narcotics. I also couldn't relax in a sitting position. I used Dulcolax suppositories and it worked fairly well a few times. I also used Sennokot which is gentler once things start to move. Bernie approved both of those as well as Fleet enemas if you need them. Use whatever it takes - you will feel much better once you start going.  This may last a while but not forever. Much better to use laxatives or enemas than developing painful hemmirhoids. Good luck!  Take care -Eve Sent from my iPodOn Jun 11, 2009, at 11:00 PM, "lufflauren" <lufflauren@...> wrote: HI EVERYONEI hope those of you that went to the retreat had a great time!  I know Eve &   have posted some updates on my status and I really appreciate that.  I will be sending a more full report of my experiences since surgery last Tuesday, but right now I'm having an issue that I'm hoping someone may have some advice for me.  (Please forgive me for being me for being a little graphic...It's not a pretty subject, be forewarned..)I am completely constipated!! I know I may sound a little unclear, hence the meds, the culprit of this issue at ahnd, but any input or advice wouldl be so greatly appreciated!!!I will be back in touch with more about my general recovery so fr, but Dr.Bridwell seemed very plesed with the incision and reslts thus far!thanks fro listenng!!!with hugs, lauren span { color: #1E66AE; font-weight: bold; } div#ygrp-mlmsg #ygrp-msg p a span.yshortcuts { font-family: Verdana; font-size: 10px; font-weight: normal; } #ygrp-msg p a { font-family: Verdana; font-size: 10px; } #ygrp-mlmsg a { color: #1E66AE; } div.attach-table div div a { text-decoration: none; } div.attach-table { width: 400px; } -->
Guest guest
, I had the same problem after surgery with my bowels. Graphic, yeah, but if you are not going, it's serious. I'm a twice a day gal, and after surgery I went but very little, and some days, not at all. At the hospital they gave me enemas, same results as you, mucus and water, nothing else. When I was home then I got nausous, and couldn't keep anything on my stomach. Called my regular doc, and Kumar, both thought I'd picked up a virus in the hospital, nobody asked how my bowels were working. Ended up at my regular doc, and guess what, they thought I might be pregnant, thus a pregnancy test, and then the line about a virus, They gave me an IV of fluids, and sent me home. I continued to get worse, to the point where I couldn't even get liquids to stay down. Off to the emergency room, on three different occasions, IV's again to tank up my fluids, and yes three more pregnancy tests, which blew my mind, who's having sex with a post op patient who can't keep anything down, UGH, and yet they said you must have a hospital born virus. After three weeks of this, I was a mess. At that point my dear friend from Oregon called, and she was very concerned when she heard me, and she began asking questions, and she went straight to how my bowels were working, I told her very little to nothing at all. We ended the conversation, and she called back minutes later. Her hubby is a doctor, and at one point was an infectous disease doc. He didn't thing this was a virus, but my bowels, and I was getting toxic. His idea, fiber caplets, and a lot of them. Sent off to the store, and he came back with Citrucel, and I took them as my friends hubby suggested. Within two hours, things were grumbling, and after a bit of straining, things got started moving, what was there was very hard at first. I took those tablets like they were as important as my pain med's cause they were. They kept things moving, and i also took the stool softeners too. Once things got moving I felt better, got some energy back, and I could keep fluids down, and then my appetite came back. I had to be on them at the maxium levels the whole time I was on pain meds. You do have to drink a lot of fluids with the fiber caplets. I say try everything people have suggested, a combo may help you, and please take this seriously, cause you don't want to end up like I did, it was truly worse than the surgery itself, cause when you are that ill, it really scares you. Make sure your doc hears you about this, get his suggestions too. Colorado Springs [ ] HELP!!!!!! HI EVERYONE I hope those of you that went to the retreat had a great time! Guest guest
,The worst part of any surgery! All those meds mess you up. I cried with relief after my first BM. I found the stool softeners weren't enough. I did one laxative suppository (maybe a second a day or two later) to get things moving. And added Metamucil to the stool softener and I finally started to become regular. About the pain sitting on the potty... did you get a handicap toilet seat? Try to adjust the height down so your feet rest comfortably flat on the floor. Mine was too high and my legs kept going to sleep. I hope this helps, you'll get better as you find the right mix of meds.-DyannFrom: lufflauren <lufflauren@...>Subject: [ ] HELP!!!!!! Melinda From: lufflauren <lufflauren@...>Subject: [ ] HELP!!!!!! Date: Thursday, June 11, 2009, 10:00 PM HI EVERYONE I hope those of you that went to the retreat had a great time! I know Eve & have posted some updates on my status and I really appreciate that. I will be sending a more full report of my experiences since surgery last Tuesday, but right now I'm having an issue that I'm hoping someone may have some advice for me. (Please forgive me for being me for being a little graphic...It' s not a pretty subject, be forewarned.. ) I am completely constipated! ! I know I may sound a little unclear, hence the meds, the culprit of this issue at ahnd, but any input or advice wouldl be so greatly appreciated! !! I will be back in touch with more about my general recovery so fr, but Dr.Bridwell seemed very plesed with the incision and reslts thus far! thanks fro listenng!!! with hugs, lauren
Guest guest
, I just wanted to say that I am glad you are out of the hospital...though sorry that your are venturing through the problem that you are. I hope by the numbers of comments that you have gotten you realize that every one of us knows exactly what you are talking about! dont be embarrassed. My first few weeks home included several packages of the Dulcolax suppositories....as well as begin very mindful of the dehydrating effects of pain meds and staying very hydrated. Also, as someone suggested, make sure you have a toilet seat riser and it is the right height for you. Dont wait to contact the doctors office if you dont' get things moving along soon, as I know your body can eventually react by wanting to throw up everything you put in it...and that would not be an easy thing to do right now. Guest guest
Just to echo what others have said...everyone has some version of this problem and everyone reacts differently to different remedies, so do whatever works!! I took all the stool softeners and stimulators, citrucel capsules, and metamucil religiously for a week and it did absolutely nothing -- I know those work great for some people but not me. I would not expect Bridwell or Bernie to be very helpful on this one (they weren't for me when I was in tears about the problem) -- so try everything and see what works for you. It will happen soon and you'll slowly feel much better.Take good care and we are rooting for you!EveFrom: cammaltby <cammaltby@...> Sent: Friday, June 12, 2009 1:31:32 PMSubject: [ ] Re: HELP!!!!!! , I just wanted to say that I am glad you are out of the hospital...though sorry that your are venturing through the problem that you are. Guest guest
Miralax works well for me. I saw commercials about it, it used to be available by prescription only. Granted, it isn't something that is going to give overnight relief but is a good daily or every other day regimen to get regular and stay that way. It is a white powdery substance that you mix with water, or any liquid. It is virtually tasteless and dissolves completely. It is more for staying regular as when I've used it with no other aids, it was about 3 days before anything moved. It doesn't cause any cramping, gas, or discomfort at all, and doesn't make you keep going and going like some laxatives can do. Once after my mother had surgery, she got into pretty rough shape and either didn't realize she was badly constipated or just didn't say it. We made a trip to the doctor's office and it turned out that there was an impaction. The nurse, boy the things nurses have to do, put on her gloves and, well, I guess the rest is self-explanatory. They emphasized to her that she needed to work at it from both ends, like oral intake of softeners, etc., as well as suppositories or enemas, etc. on the other end. This was to be done (both ends) only until everything got back to normal. So, for what it's worth I thought I might share that tidbit in case it might help someone who is getting backed up. Guest guest
Try generic brand Bisacodyl USP (5 mg), same as Dulcolax. Doctor recommended taking 2 tablets every day as needed after surgery. Worked well and fast (within 6-12 hours) without stomach cramps and going all day. Just took for first week or two after surgery. Took once a few weeks ago when needed with no issues. Also remember to drink lots of water which helps flush out your system. Not soda, juice, tea, coffee, but lots of water. At least 8 large 8 oz. glasses a day. I notice a difference when I don’t drink enough water. Work on increasing your fiber intake. Check out food labels for fiber content and also eat fresh fruits and vegetables. Another good source of fiber are Fiber One bars. I eat 3-4 of those a week and they don’t taste like cardboard. I also eat one of those small individual servings of applesauce every day. Treetop brand has more fiber than Mott’s and tastes better. Quick and easy source of some fiber. Hope this information helps. Guest guest
I don't know if any of the other surgeons do this but Dr. Hey had me start Senokot 2-3 days before surgery. It kept me from getting stopped up and I actually had diarrhea a day after surgery.P.S. I just finished a 14-hour drive to attend my baby's graduation.
