Tara, I think Vit. D is only bad if you believe in Marshal's protocol and

beliefs. Most people I talk with on other lyme forums are taking Vit D and not a

small amount. I take 2000 a day, and while I do have babesia, my lyme is dormant

as far as I can tell. Also i have been taking Cod Liver in the capsules for

several years for arthritis. It is best to go to the doctor and get your Vit D

checked correctly and I forget the name of the correct test.. Often mainstream

doctors will give  you the wrong test. Doug

We have always liked taking Cod Liver Oil.  (We are big Weston

Price Fans) and now I am understanding that Vitamin D is not helpful to someone

with Lyme...Is this true? Does someone have a short explanation why?  Is the

best thing to take regular fish oil or flax?

I read in Dr. Weil's newsletter that cod liver oil should be avoided

because any toxins (ie mercury) in the fish are stored in the liver.

Flax is great as an anti-inflammatory and immune builder.? Buy in bulk & grind

fresh for use daily.? Before my Lyme Dx my vit D levels were a bit low even

though I took supplements.? My MD increased from 1000 to 2000 iu daily.? I have

heard of a doc who doesn't think vit D supplementation is helpful in Lyme.? It's

not listed specifically? in Dr. Burrascano (just good multi-vit) guidelines or

Buhner.? I take reg. fish oil (wild caught smal fish) twice a day.

There is a bit of controversy over this. One side (Marshall Protocol) says

the Vit D is messed up by the Lyme and the cycle needs to be broken.

The other side says the opposite, you need more Vitamin D to heal and to try

to kill the bacteria other ways.

I do know my wife had extremely low Vit D levels until she started

supplements and tanning beds.

Tara,

Rereading Dr Burrascano Jr., MD treatment guidelines he DOES mention Vit. D

deficiency as a problem and recommends getting your fasting blood level

checked.? If not in the upper half of normal range to take 2000-4000 units daily

for several weeks to make up deficit. And then a lower maintenance dose based on

blood level monitoring.? I went to an endocrinologist (pre Lyme Dx) who said the

only supplement he takes is vitamin D.

Hope this is helpful.

When I owned a tanning salon years ago before my total downfall I tanned all the

time (well, not over doing it) but I felt the best when I was tanning!! I even

have one in the basement - have to start again as I have not tanned in years - I

know it will help me feel better but when you are sick even walking down in the

basement and tanning is to much energy - now that I am finally getting some

energy back I am going to start back up - I will keep you updated - but I know

it helps you feel better - I seen tons of people come in for that reson only to

tan at the salon - you have less of a chance to get skin cancer in a tanning bed

without burning and over dueing it than you do going outside and burning your

self good!!

I was referring to the Marshall Protocol about the vitaimn D...trying to limit

your sun exposure, Vit D intake, etc...intuitively it doesn't seem

healthy/balanced to me, but I am new to the lyme diagnosis, so I was looking for

feedback..  Thanks so much!  Tara

I've been thinking about the Vit D issue a lot.  I think I do better when I get

sunlight, the key is to not get HOT.  I think the heat is what actually drains

me and makes me feel worse.

Hi Tara,

Here is an extremely interesting essay by Mark A. Crislip, M.D., that was

published just yesterday at Science-Based Medicine.org. There are several

paragraphs on Vitamin D and on the protocol that says Vitamin D must be avoided

for all diseases.

http://www.sciencebasedmedicine.org/?p=563

Sue B.

==========================

Some excerpts:

Generally speaking the problem for patients, especially in the northern

latitudes, are diseases made worse by vitamin D deficiencies.

What diseases are treated with this protocol?

" Th1 inflammatory diseases " and symptoms currently being treated with the

Marshall Protocol include:

ALS (Lou Gehrig's), Ankylosing Spondylitis, Asperger's, Back pain, Barrett's

esophagus, Bipolar disorder, Candidiasis, Cardiac Arrythmia, Celiac disease, CFS

/ CFIDS / ME, Chronic Lyme/Borreliosis, Crohn's Disease, Diabetes insipidus,

Diabetes type I, Diabetes type II, Dementia, Depression, Epilepsy, FM

(Fibromyalgia), Gastroesophageal reflux disease, Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, IBS

(Irritable Bowel Syndrome), Interstitial cystitis (IC), Inflammatory bowel

disease, Irritable bowel syndrome, Kidney stones, Lofgren's syndrome, Lupus In

`Overlap' With Other Connective Tissue Diseases, Mania, MCS (Multiple Chemical

Sensitivity), Migraine headache, Morgellon's, Multiple Sclerosis, Myasthenia

gravis, Neuropathy, OCD(Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), Osteoarthritis, Panic

attacks, Parkinsons, Pervasive Developmental Disorders- Not Otherwise Specified,

POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome), Prostatitis, Psoriasis,

Psoriatic arthritis, Raynaud's syndrome/phenomenon, Reactive Arthritis (Reiter

Syndrome), Restless leg syndrome, RSD (Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy), Rheumatoid

Arthritis, Sarcoidosis, Scleroderma, Sinusitis, Seasonal affective disease

(SAD), Sjogren's, Ulcerative colitis, Uveitis, Vertigo , Other Th1 diseases

which should respond to the Marshall Protocol: Alzheimer's, Anorexia Nervosa,

Bulbous pemphigus, Cystic fibrosis, Macular degeneration, Polymyalgia

rhuematica, Polymyositis, Schizophrenia (5) "

That's a good list. Back pain, mania, osteoarthritis, vertigo, and kidney

stones all have the same pathogenesis and treatment. I went to medical school

for what?
