Re: Met with Infectious Disease Doc

Hello all: I met with an infectious disease doctor who doesn't really think I

have lyme. I am never outside and have never had the rash. My Western blot

showed P41 is + and that's it. So based on CDC, I'm negative for lyme.

However, the IGM (I think) the one where you must be 2 or 3 to be positive is

positive.

I have P41 and P23 on that test.

I started doxy 100 mg twice a day. The infectious disease doc said she would

only keep me on it for 21 days, but the rhematologist who diagnosed me said 1

month. My perionatologist said to try to get pregnant after off doxy X 1 month.

She didn't feel I really had it eitehr, but she felt it's better to tx with

antibiotics than to do nothing.

Has anyone else ever had these kinds of results? I'm just not sure what to

do?

Thanks,

Elicia

One thing you may want to consider is reading through Burrascano's diagnostic

paper

http://www.ilads.org/files/burrascano_0905.pdf

There is a section (page 18) that tallies a score to help indicate the

probability of lyme.

Do you live in an endemic area? Have pets? etc ??

http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dvbid/lyme/riskmap.htm

How long have you had symptoms? If you have lyme and have had symptoms for a

long period the 3 weeks probably isn't sufficient.

Best of luck.

Hi, Elicia,

Sure - these results are pretty common. The Western Blot is

unreliable - most labs are only using a few strains of Borrelia

burgdorferi, so all others will be missed. And they don't test for

all bands.

That said, 23 is Lyme-specific, so your Western Blot does confirm

exposure to Lyme. So, despite never being outside and never having

had a rash, you did manage to get yourself exposed.

This is not uncommon. Pets can bring the ticks inside. Mice can

bring the ticks inside. Heck - anyone who has been outside can bring

them inside. You can come into contact at any time, most any place.

At some point in your life, you managed to be bitten, probably by a

nymph the size of the period at the end of this sentence. If you have

symptoms along with that 23, you almost certainly have Lyme.

See the Western Blot explanation, starting on page 12.

Your best bet is to see an LLMD, a Lyme-Literate Medical Doctor who

follows the treatment protocols recommended by ILADS. You will

probably need to pay out of pocket, and you will probably need to

travel to find one. But to under-treat at this point would be unwise.

Alternatively, check out the many alternative therapies - Buhner's

herbal protocol, Rife, Salt/C, etc. Lyme groups abound here on .

Browse around. :)

Best of luck. If you need a referral to an LLMD, post your location

here, and someone will help you.

I just started a thread on the misconception that some doctors (and

maybe some Lymies as well) have that Lyme could only be contracted in

endemic areas. Numerous cases of Lyme sneak their way into into the

virgin " non-endemic " areas each year.

Hollywood_dreams67,

I was surprised and pleased to see someone in this group post a link

to a discussion that I started on another board a few weeks ago.

Thank you, it is a nice complement.

Unfortunately, on that board you have to be a member in order to read

that particular thread. I will post the same material here under the

title " Endemic Confusion " in case there is anyone interested.

I am in Frederick, MD but work in Vienna, VA. Any MD recommendations would be

useful.
