Guest guest
I was told today by someone that IV rocephin isn't enough to kill LYme that I need a second antibiotic at the same time which hits the sist form like Flagyl. Is this true or can the rocephin do it. If not Do you need to take them at the same time to resolve the symptoms or can the IV first do a job and bring you back to a healthy place of wellbeing and then you can tackle the sist form. Thanks so much for all the help! Shift
Guest guest
My doc had me on Biaxin, Tinidazole along with the Rocephin. Tinadazole was M-F every other week. Herxed like crazy on that combo. -------------- Original message ---------------------- From: " highlandave98 " <seanmiller1@...> > I was told today by someone that IV rocephin isn't enough to kill LYme > that I need a second antibiotic at the same time which hits the sist > form like Flagyl. Guest guest
I was told that you need a combination of abx to treat the motile, cyst and intracellular forms of the bacteria. Also you need these antibiotics to penetrate the brain and CNS. Macrolides and tetracyclines are effective on an intracellular level, penecillins and cephalosporins work well on motile species and flagyl and similar derivatives work on the cyst form. I was told by someone with a long history of Lyme disease that she did not see a great improvement in her health with IV ceftriaxone until it was combined with two other antibiotics. Other times I have seen people say that they felt better by taking tetracyclines but then got much worse symptoms when they started the flagyl - but that this was not a bad thing, it just meant that the flagyl was treating the bacteria which had been driven into cyst form, and the person was therefore experiencing another herxheimer reaction. This is just what I've read/been told, I'm sure others have direct experience of their own that they could share with you. Guest guest
I was told recently by my LLMD that you need several combinations with the IVs of abx and cyst busters to treat all forms of the Lyme. Guest guest
I have done 2 weeks (out of 6) of Rocephin (2 grams a day) and I have not herxed at all. The Lyme has affected my CNS and I am wondering if this abx combination mentioned in this thread is required. I appreciate any shared experiences on this subject. Guest guest
Is the doctor using any other abx or fungals at the same time? Guest guest
Nope, I am only taking acidophilus to keep my good bacteria in check. No other meds. Guest guest
Mike, When I was dx with Lyme in June of 2003, the proper treatment protocol (according to Dr. was to use the IV Rocephin 4 days/week (Mon-Th) and Flagyl only on Fri, Sat, & Sun. It seemed like everyone started herxing hard by the 4th week into the protocol. After that, I herxed after each weekend of Flagyl. Lucky for me I had Monday and Tuesdays as my days off from work. My back had golf ball sized (and hardness, it seemed) knots almost constantly. All the way up and down my back and in my butt, legs and shoulders. I felt flushed and feverish almost all the time, my sciatic nerve pain was so intense it was crazy. My hands hurt so bad I couldn't hold anything, even a pen - I couldn't write at all. I got numbness in my feet - then my hands. I couldn't feel the sides of my legs or my butt half the time. My light sensitivity was so bad that even looking at my computer screen triggered a migraine. Sound sensitivity ... irritability ... mood swings.. rage .. depression... anxiety .... brain fog big time... dyslexia .. attention defecit ... and the ringing in my ears is still driving me nuts. It took a while to start feeling better, but I started having more good days than bad. I was also taking Mepron for Babs and the oral abx protocol kept changing all the time. I was still taking the Rocephin and the Flagyl, then all these " breakthroughs " were surfacing and different abx were added to the mix. I was on IV for 8 months, then I finally said I wanted my port removed and wanted to take a break from abx. I was off abx for 2 months and relapsed. It seemed I felt my best when I was taking Biaxin/Flagyl combo. Biaxin 4 days, Flagyl 3 days. Then doc kept changing my abx around with each new " breakthrough " and I felt crappy again. I started having tachycardia and my BP has gone up. It's more than 3 years later and I'm still taking abx and supplements. The minocycline and Zithromax is what I'm on now. My brain fog is the clearest it's been in years, but I'm still having a lot of pain and other symptoms. Most of my pain is sciatica and muscle spasms, tendons, wrist, neck, back. The tinitus is horrific. I take Celebrex for pain, Flexeril for spasms, Diflucan & Acidopholus for yeast, Acyclovir for virus, Lyrica for nerve pain (other meds for BP, cholestorol and Beta Blocker, allergies, asthma, thyroid, depression, anxiety). There are still times when I have some flare ups and inflammation. On my monthly labs, my C-reactive protien has been as high as 37.5 (normal range is 1-4). It is rarely ever in normal range. I have pain every day of my life, some days worse than others. I have learned to live with it, as I have had persistent pain for almost all my life. I'm not sure I will ever fully recover from this disease, but I'm so used to it that it seems " normal " to me. I just had an MRI on my lower spine the other day. I have yet to see the results.
