The longer you keep at it the easier it becomes. Besides, 64 ounce isn't

even the *minimum* someone with your weight should be drinking, it's more

than double that when you figure a half ounce for each pound of body weight.

Start chugging! LOL

Loree,

Does he accept thickened liquids? Maybe he has difficulty handling thin

liquids. Just a thought off the top of my head that you may explore.

Good luck,

When I went in for my yearly post op visit, I was told to stop the Gatorade

for the most part. It has too much sugar, etc. If you start to feel weak,

etc. either increase your salt or start drinking it again.

Different doctors have different guidelines. I drink right up until

start eating, then do my best to not drink until at least an hour

after eating. It is the principle, not the details, that counts.

You'll read both in various places. I believe 1 full hour is needed

to allow the eaten food to stay in the pouch as long as possible, to

keep you full. Drink right UP to the time you eat, then your mouth

will stay moist and it's not so hard not to drink. Sandy RN

I have found that some people that know all that I have been through and should know better for offering me a drink just don't get it.

I have tried being sociable and polite by saying - No thank you and even - No thank you - you know I can't drink alcohol - put they still insist or say - Not even a drink or a glass of champagne ???

The last time was recent. I finally let them know point blank when asked again and this time they added - What will drinking a little do to you ???

Looking at them eye to eye I said - It Will Kill Me !!!! - and that my friends did the trick. :)

Love and Hugs.

I'd estimate, on a good day, I drink 32 ounces of water. They say an adult

should drink 64 ounces and since I'm the size of a four year old, I think 32

oz. is good. Heh.

I get about 40 oz or around 1200 cc a day. That's mostly my " food " drink by

g-tube. Then maybe 6-8 oz of water, 2 oz of juice or Gatorade by g-tube. Then

whatever I may sip by mouth tea, flavored water or pop. Occasionally

alcohol! ;o)

The doctors would like me to get more water but it doesn't fit in my tummy.

If my tummy is too full and I move, lay down or even burp it comes back up. I

try not to be picked up if I'm full. If they want more it will need by IV!

i get very puffy over the 1st 36 hours in which i'm drinking enough. i've

been told it's because my body is trying to compensate and prepare for the

next drought. if i just keep drinking, the swelling goes down.

I drink about 2-3 cups of hot cocoa/day, 3-4 cups of tea, 2-3 cups

juice and 1 cup of milk. At night I wake up and drink 1 cup juice and

1 glass of water, although lately it's been 2 cups of water because

I'm not in the mood for the sugar.

It¹s funny you guys are talking about this today because just last night I

decided to actually figure out how much water I drink! I am sort of a

wateraholic so this is going to sound insane but I drink between 80 and 100

ounces of water a day. That doesn¹t count other liquids although water is

by far my main drink. The weird thing is that I don¹t pee that much, about

every 6 hours during waking hours, and I am not at all bloated or retaining

water, and no I don¹t sweat all the time. It is kind of a joke but I have

no idea where all that water goes! still, if I drink less (like god-forbid

merely 50 or 60 ounces) I feel completely dehydrated and physically

weak/drained. When I drink water I actually feel stronger, like a wilted

plant that gets watered and stands up strongly again. ??

I have to drink a lot of water and iced tea to eat. I do not have a

g-tube and eat all of my food by mouth. But I can only swallow food with

a swallow of liquid after it. So I end up drinking a lot, mostly water.

I like water. But I wonder if this is just me. For those of you without

g-tubes who say you drink very little; how do you swallow food? Does it

just go down? Mine seems to stick in my esophagus unless I wash it down

with liquid.

food goes down better for me without liquid. in fact, liquid slips past

food and chokes me. when taking pills, i cut them small, chew my food,

then add pill to chewed food before i swallow. liquid just goes around

pills. yuck.

Alana,

I can swallow almost any kind of pills with water. However, if one gets

stuck, a piece of bread or candy will push it down. I guess that

swallowing is another thing that is different among SMAers. I just

always assumed everyone needed fluid to swallow. I learn all kinds of

things on this list.
