low blood sugar

Yes I have this problem regularly. I posted something on it last

week. It started over ten years ago and has been with me ever since.

I have been diagnosed with AIH in 2001. I had lots of tests to find

out what could be behind it: diabetes, allergies, gluten intolerance

etc. and I was told I was healthy. My personal remedy is to eat some

dry bread and take some rehydration fluids (salt/sugar water). It

usually happens not long after a meal, mostly after breakfast, or

when I have been cycling/running very fast/up a hill etc. One doctor

once mentioned the possibility of a reaction to anti-histamines

(found in red wine, hard cheeses, salami-type sausages, smoked food

stuffs) but I don't take any of these apart from the occasional bit

of parmesan cheese once in a blue moon. I am not on prednisone.

At times I get so shaky I have to stop driving and certainly could

not write or type. What did your doctor tell you?

back

rarely.

So far, my docs havne't done anything about it. They want my liver

to stabilize and then do testing. My gastro doc said, " 20 something,

thin women seem to have this problem " . I say bologna! Give me a

real answer Doc! and he says, " Bologna? Hmm, maybe you should eat

some when you get the shakes! "

I try to keep protein handy and some orange juice. I also get panic

attacks I get so " weird feeling' from the drop in blood sugar. I

wonder if our pancreas are healthy?

Hi Adriene,

I had my pancreas checked - by now I think I had everything checked

that is checkable, I have a bulky and frustrating folder full of lab

results and ultrasound pics - and of course all is fine there. I

think that is the answer they give you when they run out of things to

check. I feel such an idiot then when I insist that no, I don't feel

great and I don't fake it either. My one and only sympathetic family

doctor said recently that I would get so much more attention from

these specialists if I had a more " interesting " disease...

Take care!

---Hi:

Hypoglycemia is common among candida suffers. The diet advocated

by Bee for candida would give better stabilization of blood sugars.

Gosh , don’t know how you do it…I would flip out if I

had to spend time in the hospital as much as do you! Get better soon…and I hope they get your

blood sugar

Hello all,

I've been out of the loop for the last week.

I had another attack last week

and was in the hospital from Wed to Sat.

Pancreas enzymes normal, as usual,

liver enzymes 300+ (10 times normal). They

wouldn't have kept me except that

my blood sugar all of a sudden dropped to the 30's

while I was in the ER.

After I had IV glucose 4 times and they'd get my

blood sugar up to around 70

only to have it back to the 30's in less than an

hour, they ended up getting

the GI on call to come to the ER and they admitted

me. It was late Friday

before my blood sugar quit dropping to the

30's. NOT FUN! My mom was having

a stroke in the ER thinking I was going to go into

a coma. My blood sugar

dropped as low as 32 several times. I

actually changed my hospital gown three

times just while in the ER because it was soaking

wet with sweat.

Ends up the endo and my GI/hepatologist think the

problem with my blood sugar

is my liver. Because I have AIH as well as

chronic pancreatitis, my liver is

not able to kick in and produce glucose when I am

unable tolerate things by

mouth. I've had these episodes of major low

blood sugar before with the

flares of panc but they have gotten worse over the

last 2-3 months. It

actually all makes sense because my liver enzymes

have been more elevated with

my panc attacks the last few months. So, now

the GI/hep is thinking about

doing another liver biopsy to see where we stand

with the status of my

liver. I've only had one liver biopsy

and that was in Dec 02. That's when I

was diagnosed with autoimmune hepatitis, which had

already progressed to Stage

3 fibrosis or possibly mild stage 4 cirrhosis.

I am way behind on my e-mails but I'll try to get

caught up in the next few

days.

thanks,

W

Hi Faith,

I suffer from the same symptoms. I have never asked for a glucose

intolerance test, I can tell the doctor myself it is sugar that gives me

palpitations and so on.

The g.i. test consist in feeding you liquid sugar and testing your

bloodsugar level every so hours. It usually is too short in time to

prove hypoglycaemia For that you need the prolonged test. But I wouldn't

even consider the prolonged gi test. No way would I take liquid or solid

sugar to prove to any doctor I feel sick when I take it.

So you are right not to do this. Medical doctors are mad for proving

your symptoms methodically and scientifically. Your story is worth less

than their test. I think they should start by listening to a well

informed patient.

Drinking orange juice is forbidden in Bee's diet. No fruits. If after a

while on the diet you can take some fruitsugars you could try diluting

it (take a quarter of juice with three quartes of orange juice) Increase

the amount of juice to see what you can tolerate, but stay on half

orange juice half mineral water. You'll start liking it in the end

better than the original sweet taste. Freshly pressed juice of course,

nothing out of a can or bottle.

It is only normal you feel the effect of a diet after you've been

informed about what causes your symptoms. You couldn't go back to eating

the way you did after you know what you know now. When you know what

makes you sick you are much more motivated to stick to the dietary

discipline.

It is strange that my visit to the natural doctor, Dr. Brody,

revealed that my blood sugar was low, and now all of a sudden, after

being on his diet for just two days, I am seeing the affects of such

a problem.

I found a book on my shelf that my sister gave me many years ago

titled " Take Charge of your health. " It is written by Lindberg &

McFarland. In a chapter on Hypoglycemia I thought I was reading my

story of the other night around 4am when I was feeling horrible,

lightheaded, hot, sweating, palpitations and so on. It also mentioned

the big muscles at the side of your neck and head going into

contraction and feeling like your head is going to come off. These

were all my symptoms. I thought it was Dr. Brody's diet. Cound it be

low blood sugar? What if it is, how can I drink Orange Juice in the

morning when I have Candida?

What am I going to do. I think I need to have some bloodwork done. In

the book the author refers to herself as " Mother " . She says mother

recommends this or that. She says the glucose tolerance test is a

unnatural procedure and she does not recommend it. She just

recommends you change your diet.

So here I am with yet another problem. Maybe this is why I have been

doing so poorly. I can use all the help I can get. Oh, the book also

listed crying spells with low blood sugar which is what I can get.

Thanks for listening.

==>Take the sea salt and lemon drink to help low blood sugar, and

also cinnamon tea (make it like the clove tea in my article or in the

Recipe Files), or take it in the raw egg drink. Clove tea would also

help low blood sugar.

==>Do remember that 58% of protein and 10% of good saturated fats are

carbs which provides plenty of glucose required by the body for blood

sugar levels. When you get the symptoms described above take 1

teaspoon of baking soda in 6 ounces of warm water. Also take an

epsom salts baths to obtain the sulphur for healing and the

magnesium. And like someone else suggested read the article on

Adrenals in the files.

==>I've had numerous blood glucose tests and even though I had

symptoms of low blood sugar the tests were always normal and I felt

sick after doing the test. I agree that you should change your diet

and trust what you are eating to help your body regulate blood sugar

levels.

==>Ensure you are getting enough oil soluble vitamins (A, D & E) and

omega-3 from fish oil (summer) and cod liver oil (winter). Your body

needs 3,000 mg omega-3 per day, which is excellent for the emotions

article " Depression and Anxiety " in the files for more help.

Hey Marla,

I also have hypoglycemia (for a long time - sometimes less, sometimes

lots). The last thing you want to do is eat fruits or any sugars!

Eating fruits will not slow things down. It will make your blood

sugar level peak suddenly, and then crash. Then if you eat fruits

again, the same vicious, ever increasing cycle will continue.

- The very best, best, thing to do is to follow this diet. If you

read other posts on this thread, they will concur with this.

- As well, I seem to remember previous posts from members having the

same problem, saying their low blood sugar problem had been

eliminated with this diet... The proof is in the pudding.

- If you want to read these posts, you could do a message search with

the key words " low blood sugar " , or " blood sugar " , etc.?

- As for me, I find that following this diet really stabilises my

blood sugar; cheating sends my system into this low/high blood sugar

roller coaster, with all the yuk manifestations.

- Hang in there. Drink enough water. Drink Bee's electrolyte drink.

Eat good protein (meat) that will stabilize and better sustain your

body's blood sugar, non starchy vegetables, good fats (I find they

really help cravings).

- The going might be rough while our body is trying to get back into

a healthy, normal mode of operation, but it does happen. The proof is

the many, many members who can vouch for it (e.g.: in the success

story file).

Hope this helps.

Hi Marla,

Fran gave you really good advice...the other thing to remember is that

dying candida releases alcohol-like toxins. Those toxins would be

contributing to why you feel shaky and like your blood sugar is low.

to help you understand better what is going on, read the files on

Healing Reactions and the treatments on how to help yourself through it.

I've got low blood sugar. I'm eating some hamburger & veggie puree

soup (stock & good veggies all pureed together) with sauerkraut for

breakfast. That's been my usual breakfast for some months now. I'm

having trouble even eating the food. I feel weak & shaky. Help!

> Should I include some fruits back into my diet to slow this down?

(ha - probably crazy cravings rationalizing here!)

==>It is rough to go through natural healing and die-off, but it is

well worth it in the end Marla. Fruits are the very last thing you

need at this point. Weak and shaky doesn't mean you are hypoglycemic,

which is not possible on your diet, because 58% of protein and 10% of

fats turns into glucose in the body. Most candida sufferers do have

adrenal fatigue which causes early morning shakiness and weakness.

You can help your adrenals most by doing dry skin brushing, coffee

enemas, lemon & sea salt drink, Epsom salt baths, etc. - see the

Adrenal Folder in the files for an excellent article on it. The

others helped you as well with other articles that will help you.

Hang in there. The only way out is the way through!

Thanks y'all! I was wondering if it really was low blood sugar or if it was

something else. I have not had symptoms of low blood sugar in many years,

so it's not a problem for me. But this morning I felt that same old feeling

that I remember from long ago. I bet it is my adrenals!

I'm going to the store today to buy more supplies.

Dear Marla,

Also that bad feeling you had could be candida toxins. They make you

feel spaced out, dizzy, lightheaded, with almost like a drugged

feeling, including fatigues.

Good luck buying supplies. You can take the handy supplements list

with you when you are ready to buy them - see the Supplements Folder.

Hi Faith and ,

In my case, hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) has been an issue for many

many years. Your posts prompted some thoughts.

- First of all, I totally agree with Bee that the adrenal issue

should be checked. In any case, it is excellent for low blood sugar

sufferers (and IMHO, any person on this group) to help the adrenals

function better, thus helping pancreatic functions. Nothing is

separate in the body, and one problem can stem elsewhere. This was

the opinion of a naturopath I consulted years ago, that the cause of

hypoglycemia is in limbic and adrenal malfunction.

- I did a search in the posts here, with the key words " low blood

sugar " , " hypoglycemia " and " diabet " (to cover both words diabetic and

diabetes), to check Bee's messages on the topic and to see any

success stories (and there are! on this diet, people have stabilised

their blood sugar levels, which ever side of the scale it was).

Perhaps you could do the same search and check it out? (I found it

very interesting.)

- Personally, I too have had to eat 6 small (or not so small) meals

a day. However, with Bee's diet, this has changed, to my greatest

satisfaction. When following the diet without cheating, after a while

my appetite is more normal, I am satieted with less food and can go

longer without eating -- often up to 4 hours at a time, which was

unheard of before. And the more I follow the diet faithfully, the

more I can go without eating in the evening, another first. As soon

as I cheat even a little, my body is back on the low blood sugar

yoyo. They say the proof is in the pudding; well, this is proof.

- What I did is ease into eating less often, as I eased into the

whole diet. When my blood sugar is stabilised, I don't eat

automatically after 21/2 hours because I've done so for many years;

rather, I listen to my body and eat when I get hungry at regular

times as much as possible, without fear that there will be a blood

sugar crash. (I can now go hungry without this fear hanging over my

head -- another bonus.)

- One point Bee stressed is the importance of eating at regular

times; I would agree with that.

- Re: Cooked fruit and orange juice: My personal experience, as well

as holistic practicionners I've consulted and everything I've read on

that point to the opposite. Cooked fruit is loaded with sugar; and

the sugar from orange (or other fruit) juice goes directly in the

blood stream, causing a spike, then a crash. Also, eating too much

and too often stresses and overworks the pancreas. This I was told by

an overall excellent naturopath/nutritionist I also consulted years

back; I found it to be true. At the time , she only allowed one or

two apples a day with a tiny handful of nuts or seeds to slow down

the digestion of the sugar; no fruit juices. Now I know better in

terms of apples, nuts and seeds, but at least this practicionner knew

that fruit sugars were not a good idea.

- Note: In some of the past posts I read, some people wer doing

really well on 2 meals a day. I remembered that way back then, for a

few years I was having exactly this, 2 meals a day, eating what would

look like a frugal diet, but was in fact excellent, and leading a

very healthy life style. I was thriving on it.

- I would suggest trying Bee's approach as is and totally, simply;

easing into it, and see what happens; I think you will be pleasantly

surprised, as I was. the proof IS in the pudding... :- )

- I have also found that going to bed earlier (10:00 p.m.) and get up

earlier (6:00 a.m.) prevents/helps blood sugar fluctuations. (Not

always possible, I know... :- )

Let us know how this progresses. Best success!

This is all interesting; one of the first signs that my candida had healed was

when I no longer had these blood sugar drops, and I could stop eating 6-7 meals

a day. When I was sick I had to eat every two hours. Now I eat a small

breakfast, lunch at 11:30 or twelve, and dinner at 6:00, with no weak feelings

or low blood sugar symptoms. I have also heard that eating healthy fat with

carbs helps to stabilize the blood sugar levels so they don't spike.

of course I agree, and I am sure I sufer from adrenal fatigue, I

actually have UC, which of course anyone with an IBD is going to have

candidia as well, adrenal fatigue has been a large issue for me, yet

it has improved over the years.

Alot of my issue as well is that I frankly cannot eat enough in three

meals to keep me from losing copious amounts of weight due to my high

activity level. It is simply uncomfortable to me and I don't enjoy

it. So even if my blood sugar does not go down, I feel the need to

eat every little bit simply because I need the fuel

I do not eat alot of fruit, maybe half a small piece of something, a

whole piece when I feel I realy need it, grapefruit apples, berries,

ect. this is an issue that I feel I will disagree with this group on

is the 'fruit hate' i sense, Yes, some people should refrain from it,

yes many eat too much, but fruit also helps balance inner/outer

cellular fluid balance which assists in moving toxins out of your

body, veggies don't do this anywhere near as well. I myself am a

holistic practicioner and everyone of course is going to have

different thoughts, As far as cooking the fruit. Cooking fruit does

two very important things for people with compromised digestive

systems

a) kills yeast and mold which are rampent on fruits

B) eases the digestion of it since poorly digested food particles sit

in the digestive tract as perfect food for yeast and other bad bugs

I am on this exact diet except for the fruit, have been for quite

some time and agree it is the only way people should really eat, I

have been quite impressed so far with many of Bee's insights

I no longer have blood sugar issues at all. I used to

have them severely and would be hungry all the time.

A year and a half ago I got my blood work done and I

had been on a low carb diet for 8 months. My fasting

glucose was 98, and my HGBA1C was 5.9 (6.0 and over is

the diabetic range).

Now a bit over a year later my HGBA1C is 5.2 and my

fasting glucose is ~75. Your blood sugar issues will

clear up on this diet.

That tiny bit of fruit is your entire problem. See,

you can consider it like the body has two engines, one

burns fat, and one sugar (like a diesel and regular

car).

Your body will first use all the sugar it has, before

switching to fat burning mode. If you include a large

dose of sugar (fruit is high in fructose, a natural

but harmful sugar) daily, you have never run your

sugar engine to empty, therefore your body never

switches to fat burning mode, and your body is always

craving more sugar to fill that tank that is always on

low. You need to let that tank get empty, then switch

to cleaner burning fuel - fat.

> I also am highly athletic and either run or cycle in

> this have some affect?

I exercise regulary too and I have no problems with

energy levels. In fact, coconut oil is known to give

high levels of energy because it is a quickly digested

fat. It gives long, clean burning, stable energy

levels, not like a sugar high and a sugar crash.

I just want to clear this up, I don't crave sugar, I don't eat alot

of fruit, maybe 1/4 of a small grapefruit, something like that. In

fact I have to force myself to eat fruit most of the time, I'd rather

eat veggies, all I am saying is that I have found, even when followng

this exact diet for long periods of time (1 yr) with no fruit, I tend

to do better with just a bit in my diet.

ps, another issue for me is weight loss, I lose copious amounts of

weight quickly when no fruit is in my diet

I'm just curious on thoughts, but please don't think I'm some sort of

banana shooting, fruit-a-holic :)

Hi there,

There is nothing to clear up, I understand that it can

feel better to keep a little fruit in the diet. But

that doesn't mean it's good for you, know what I mean?

You want to lose that last 10 pounds if I recall

correctly and that will help you do that.

More over, when you take out fruit and you don't feel

good it's probably because you are getting die off

because you've been feeding the candida all along.

You'll probably go through some detox which is no fun

but necessary. I recommend drinking lots of water

(which is what they recommend for a hang over as

well), and other detox strategies.

This of course is all my opinion and if you choose to

eat fruit that's your prerogative, but I would advise

against it.

It is a lot easier to act ourselves into new thinking than to think ourselves

into a new action.

OK maybe I'm confused, but I thought you wanted to

lose weight? If you don't, and you lose weight

without fruit, you probably need to up your protein

and fat to keep your weight steady. But fruit will

feed candida, keep blood sugar fluctuating and cause

all kinds of problems.

no,no, you must be thinking of someone else, I am already very slim

75# on a muscular 5'4'' frame, I have uc so have had to work to get

to this weight, hard for me to keep on weight. I eat alot of protien

and fat and this was actually what the discussion was to start with

for me. I can't just eat 3 meals a day, first and foremost because I

am so small and need so much protien and fat to keep me going that I

simply can't eat enough in three meals and it will flat out make me

sick. I eat a bit of fruit because it helps me need a little bit

less protien and fat. of course, biochemically you know why.....I am

sure the UC puts me at a disadvatage here since my body is constantly

fighting a catabolic state. So part of the reason I eat often in

because of fear of my blood sugar dropping and part of it is because

my stomach is small and I seem to be not able to eat enough if I

don't.

Does this make sense? I worry that it is preventing me from fully

healing but am a little confused how to deal with it, without starving

I'd rather eat veggies, all I am saying is that I have found, even

when followng this exact diet for long periods of time (1 yr) with

no fruit, I tend to do better with just a bit in my diet.

==>Hi there. Please put your name at the end of your message my

friend. We have a blind member, Maddalena, and when she hears your

name she knows to stop listening. It helps her so so much.

==>I notice that you joined Oct. 11th so the diet you have done for

long periods of time was nothing like this diet. What helps the

most is the healthy nature-made fats which provides the best and

most efficient source of energy rather than an carbs, fruits

included. Please read my article about the fats, fruits, etc. and

you will understand better how different the diet you did before is

very different from this one.

==>Fructose is the very worst sugars you can give your body as well;

do a google search on www.mercola.com with " fructose " and you will

see what I mean.

==>Hi . Sorry, we seem to be at you a little bit today, eh?

All of our members are going through so much trying to cure their

candida and no fruits except lemons & limes are allowed. I

understand you are not a fruit-a-holic. What you need to understand

is that you don't need any carbs to be healthy, although this diet

does include a lot of veggies, and that fats like coconut oil,

butter, lard, cod liver oil, oil soluble vitamins, etc., etc. are so

important for health, metabolism, etc. and your body will normalize

and you won't lose weight.

no problem I'm asking for assistance and people are trying to give me

answers, just wanting to clarify, my position. Just so you know I

have only been on your forum for a short time, yet the diet I have

followed is exactly like this one, using exactly the same fats, good

quality meats, ect. Regardless of the fruit issue, what I am asking

is that I find it interesting that everyone eats three meals a day

and doesn't have a problem with this, since actually when I haven't

eaten fruit I have had to eat more often than I do with just a bit.

I simply cannot eat enough in three meals, hunger is less of an issue

than needing fuel, even when following this exact diet with these

exact recommended ratios?
