Can long car ride cause a herx?

I was just wondering if a long car ride can cause you to herx really

bad. I went to see my LLMD for the first time several weeks a go and

got really sick on the way home. I didn't feel real good on the ride

there either, but REALLY sick on the ride home. I thought I was going

to have to go to an emergency room. It felt like a really bad herx.

The drive was 8 hours one way. We left on a Wed. and came back on a

Thurs. My husband drove.

Some times the movement in the car makes me fell light headed and

dizzy. So I don't know if that was it, or if it was the long drive.

Has anyone else gotten sick from driving in the car?

yes kathy...i have had this happen now for years.it seems a bit easier to deal

with if i am driving...however i really get ill apoun reaching the

destination.i have panic attacks and fears of getting really sick that stop me

from taking long car trips.my first exsprience with this was as a youth riding

the school bus.i cannot look down or around while riding in a car.I cannot read

or eat as we travel along.I have to wear my sunglasses constantly when in the

car as the bright sun light can trigger a headache and nausa ...I think these

are all from a type of herx...sensitivity to sight, sound, movements, and oders

are all some of my nightmare story!

Kathy,

It is quite possible you simply felt worse due to exertion, not a herx

caused by die off of spirochetes.

Remember: Every time we feel bad, even if on antibiotics, is not always a

Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction. Often times, especially if after we've done

something strenuous, we simply feel sick because our bodies are ill.

Car rides, traveling to someplace different, sleeping in a different bed (if

one can manage to sleep) can all cause stress that our bodies react to.

Sick bodies have a harder time dealing with stress and physical symptoms are

often the result.

Traveling by car is the WORST for me.. And it has nothing to do with herxing

.. When I made the trek from NJ to SC which took us 13 hours I was sick for 2

weeks and I thought I was going to die. The day we got here I slept for like

5 hours when I woke up I was literally crying and screaming in pain, I felt

like someone was sticking me with broken glass shards all over my body.....

When I asked my LLMD at the time why did that happen she said because of my

illness a car ride like that though it was 13 hours my body see's as if I

was riding in a car for 2 weeks.

Then I had a 9 hour car ride home from florida 3 years ago and I was so

sick that on the 4th day I was home I wound up in the emergency room.. And

this was just from a 9 hour car ride..

We are planning on moving back north sometime this year to PA and it hasn

t even happened yet and all ready I am a nervous wreck just at the THOUGHT

of the car ride..

As a child I got very car sick. Mostly just very sick to my

stomach. This time it wasn't my stomach, all my lyme symptoms

increased. I felt really sick.

Your right, the trip was exhausting. I didn't sleep well and we

went out for supper the night we got there. I did more then I

usually do and on top of that I didn't sleep well.

I also get really light headed and my head feels like it's swirling

on even short car rides. It was just to much. I think I get severe

motion sickness.

Kathy,

The " simple " act of watching items on the side of the road move past your

eyes at 60 miles an hour can have a huge effect on the brain. That is a lot

of stimuli that most of us don't get following our normal routines around

the house. Not to mention the cars.

Did you ever tense up when you thought maybe a car was getting too close?

Maybe you did but didn't notice because it becomes part of our normal

driving pattern/routine. This can cause the muscles to be used and dump

normal toxins into our bodies. Then our bodies have to work a little extra

hard to remove those natural by products of life.

I still have days, like when I have a migraine, that car riding is not an

option. For me it is just too much information for my brain to process

until I'm feeling better again. I still remember the days when I felt just

fine but couldn't go fifteen minutes in a car without feeling like I was

going to throw up or pass out or both.

Even though the result is every Lyme symptom flaring up, it is far more

likely to be a flare-up and not a Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction.

Yeah it is likely that it is symptoms flaring up. It's also

happened when I've gone fishing with my husband. The movement of

the boat makes me sick too, really dizzy, light headed and a really

foggy head.

Is there anything I can do when I need to travel to keep symptoms

from flaring?

Kathy,

Maybe something for motion sickness? Ask your doctor. There may be

something over the counter or a prescription that would help.

I ended up getting so sick that I had to lay down in the back seat

for most of the ride home. My husband did all the driving. It

wasn't much fun!!

That's what my husband had suggested. I'm so drug sensitive now

that I was scared it would make me worse. I did take it when I was

younger and was fine on it. Two of my kids took it also because

they got really car sick too when they were young.

Thanks,

Hi Kathy,

I can empathize with you about the nausea. My lyme causes this and

dizziness which comes and goes. I've found that compazine helps me

be able to be upright and function better. I tried dramamine and it

made me sicker and I tried phenergan and it put me to sleep. There

are some other ones which are prescription that you can get. Good

luck.

I had trouble with getting very tense in the car, no matter who was

driving---it was like a panic attack every time we got into normal

traffic. It's better, now, but it was tough at the time--on me and

on my poor husband! ;) I don't know what caused it--it must have

been faulty processing .

-Thanks Cooky!! Even the phenergan that puts you to sleep would be

better then being so sick on long trips. I've taken dramamine and

was ok, but that was before lyme. Maybe I'll try compazine. Thamks

for the info!!

I was just the opposite with the meds. I had to stop Compazine immediately,

really dizzy & out of it as I recall. I now take Phenergan in addition to

Vicoprofen for bad headaches + nausea & I function fine (well, as much as bad

headache allows!!). Studies have shown that docs are having a lot of luck with

Phenergan for migraines-just an FYI.

Interesting how the meds affect us all differently. Good luck!
