Guest guest
A herx feels like you have been run over by a truck, hit by a train and then dropped from about 60k feet *-) My first and worst herx was a dooooozy. So cold I couldnt get warm, had on sweats, under a couple of comforters and piled up in front of a blazing fireplace, ached horribly head to toe, headache, etc, just felt like complete crap Thats about the best way I can describe it LOL > > > > > What exactly is this herx reaction? Guest guest
Put simply, a Herx is a bacterial die-off. When that happens, they release toxins and you get sicker from the toxins and the bacteria. Generally, your Lyme symptoms get worse. The timing of your Herx depends on what you're taking and how much. My first Herx came about 4 days after starting 400 mg doxy daily. Jessie > > What exactly is this herx reaction? Guest guest
I am currently taking 200 mg per day (100 mg twice daily). How long doesit USUALLY take for a herx? > What exactly is this herx reaction? Guest guest
, Everyone of us respond to treatment differently. Not the answer that you were probably looking for. A Herx reaction is a response to the die off of the Lyme in your system. Some people Herx severly for weeks while others, like myself, never experience a Herx. It's like the EM rash, some people get them and others don't. Actually that's an interesting question. I never had an EM rash and I never Herx'd. How many others in the group never had an EM rash and don't Herx. Sometimes it is very difficult to tell the difference between a Herx and actual Lyme symptoms. It's best to discuss this in detail with your Primary Lyme Care Provider (PLCP I just invented it :-). During recovery it is normal to have many ups and downs. Try to do your best to stay in the middle, when your feeling bad know that you will feel better, when your feeling GREAT resist going out and conquering the world. Slow and steedy wins the race to recovery against Lyme. If you over do it when your feeling GREAT you give the Lyme an opportunity to gain ground and you may possible suffer a relapse. I would recommend learning to listen to your body. Judge your progress every three months to give your treatment a chance to work. Write down all of you questions for your PLCP visits so that you can discuss them in detail with your trusted expert. IMHO, recovering from Lyme is a holistic process. Requiring a mind, body and soul sympatic effort! Be well, > > What exactly is this herx reaction? Guest guest
Another thing to remember about a Herx reaction is that if you are working with a really good PLCP (Primary Lyme Care Provider) they are sometimes able to track the success of their treatments by the timing and severity of the Herx reactions. So it's very important to keep an accurate log of your Herx times and specific symptoms. Some PLCP's use this information to pulse abx (antibiotics) so that you are taking the proper abx at the right time to kill the Lyme when they are vulnerable. Pulsing abx is more effective for two reasons, first you are killing the Lyme when they are vulnerable and second you are only taking the abx when necessary. This is sometimes much better for your body. Be well, > > > > What exactly is this herx reaction? Guest guest
There's a number of factors which will determine whether you get a herx. The load of spirchetes that you are carrying, their location in your body, and the rate at which they die off are all important factors. I started on 200mg of doxy daily, for a month. I did get a herx which expressed itself as severe headaches which would last many hours but my other symptoms tended to decline in severity. When I started on Ketek and Flagyl, I had an extremely severe herx after 3 days and again about 5 weeks later. These herxs exprressed them selves as panic attacks, with visual disturbances, upon waking at night, which were probably due to a heavy load of spirochetes in my brain. I had a exacerbation of my joint and back pain as well, which was fairly constant, along with increased fatigue. Gradually over several months these symptoms abated somewhat. I am on my third day of IV Rocephin, but so far have only had a few twinges of pain in my feet, late at night. No herx with the Rocephin, might mean that the Ketek and Flagyl destroyed the LD, so my current symptoms might be lingering damage and may resolve, somewhat, with time. Who knows. cheers Duncan > > > > > What exactly is this herx reaction? Guest guest
That's about half (or less) of the usual dose, so it could take you a week or more to Herx.
