Hi Connie,

Thanks for the extra info. I’m not much of an expert on 504s, but I’m sure

someone else will have more information.

I’m glad to hear that you have an appointment for next week. How did you

daughter feel about taking the meds? It helps so much when they buy into it.

I was fortunate that my son was accepting of it. I think he thought it

started working right away, so that was good. :-)

Each kid is so different with meds. I heard all sorts of stories about

Luvox, and the side effects literature on everything, even aspirin, is

enough to make you crawl in a closet. Lawyers, I think. :-) If it helps her,

that’s what you can hope for.

Good luck next week!

Best…

Thanks for writting. She is on 504, and has been! I was so upset when

they kept her after school!

The 504 lady said they could keep her after school for no homework,

but not for any other work.

Well, they did yesterday! and i found that out after they kept her.

If they try it again, I will say no! I just didn't want to start

anything because they all seem to take up for each other (teachers

and principals)

I am so upset with this school and teachers, but the other school

here is much worse, and I can't afford private school or home

schooling.

About the meds, she was on prozac and it was helping, but I got

afraid of everyone telling me about side effects, that is why i

stopped it.

I do have an appointment next week to get her back on it cause I'm

desperate now. I wish I would have never took her off and I feel

really bad about that.

Thanks

Hi, Connie.

Oh boy. .. .OCD is selective and usually unreasonable. . .That is the

nature of it. And just when you think you have figured out what your

kid is reacting too, OCD changes. It never seems to make sense and

it's always over reactive. You can't speak reason to it (OCD), you

just have to boss it back, with therapy, and determine to win. It

takes work, but it is worth it. Therapy and meds, one or both, will

not always make it go away, and even if it does, it will most likely

come back (the waxing and waning part of OCD), but both or either

thing can improve your child's life. It won't happen overnight

though. Both take time to work. Sometimes both are needed, depending

on the child. Our son needs both, for now.

To punish the child for something the OCD is causing them to do, is

never going to help. In our case, it made things much worse for our

son. He was in a similar situation at a school, with the teacher

punishing him regularly. So, getting that info (the other person

suggested) to the teacher is a great start. In our case, we opted to

pull him out of public school and homeschool him. We are on our 9th

year, and it was a blessing for us.

In answer to your question, it sounds like to me that your daughter

definitely has OCD. Our son, who has germ issues, will cover his face

in public, washes his hands whenever he has touched anything the

considers germy (one I kind of like - lol ), freak out if someone

coughs or sneezes, opens doors with his hand inside of his shirt or

coat, etc. Yet, get this, (we've had words over this) if food falls

on the floor, he will pick it up and eat it. He can't even explain

it. Yet, he HAS OCD. It is selective to what it decides is germy.

It doesn't make sense, but it is also something our son can't help.

All he can do is the exposure therapy to try to fight it and gain

control over it.

There are some great books available, Connie, that can help you

educate yourself to OCD. It helps to understand what your daughter is

dealing with. Here are a few names:

Freeing Your Child from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder by Tamar Chansky

What to do When your Child had Obsessive Compulsive Disorder by Aureen

Pinto Wagner

Talking Back to OCD by S. March

Helping Your Child with OCD by Lee Fitzgibbons and Cherry Pedrick

The last two are workbooks that give instructions on how to boss the

OCD back. But, they also have good information about just what OCD is

and what it does to the person who has it. The first time I read some

of this stuff, I cried, thinking about this is what our son is dealing

with. But, as I continued to read, it also gave me hope that

something could help.

I don't like our son on meds either, Connie. He has side effects, one

major one being weight gain. We took him off for a period of 8 months

and he relapsed into a really bad episode of his OCD. He is back on

them, because he couldn't live on the sofa in the fetal position,

white faced and clenched, where he wasn't sleeping or eating, or even

communicating for that matter. Sometimes they are just needed. But,

I do understand you not wanting her on them. I hope something I

shared helped.

Best to you,

BJ

Connie,

Your daughter can play in the dirt and still have OCD. If this disease were

sane, it would be easier to treat. My son is deathly afraid of buttons and can't

wear them, touch them or be in air they've been though, but he has no trouble

playing any sport with kids wearing buttons, and it won't bother him.

I had a p-doc say my son didn't seem like an OCD kid with contamination issues

because he wasn't bothered by sticky substances. We weren't with him very long.

Anyway, your daughter's teacher needs an education, and quickly! How dare she

start to punish a child who has no control over her disease. This teacher needs

to understand that OCD is a disease just like diabetes and she can't blame the

sufferer, or pretend to know anything about this disease when she has no idea

what she's talking about.

Sorry...I'm having a bad day and this seemed like a good chance to vent.

Possibly true (lol), but not always. I had a severe reaction to

Imitrex (for migraines) that caused me to have a stroke and caused

heart damage. I ended up in ICU. It altered my life permanently. My

left side is still weak and I have ongoing heart problems, but I never

saw a dime. Lawyers first told me that there was no way to prove it

was the Imitrex. I was thinking, " Duh, took the Imitrex. . Ended up

in the hospital with problems I'd never had before. " Later when

others started coming forward with similar problems after taking

Imitrex, lawyers told me it was too late to do anything about it. So

much for lawyers. <shrug>

But, you are right, if you read the side effects, you will never take

anything again. ;o) Scares a person to death.

Oh my gosh, BJ, I'm so sorry that happened to you! You're right - not

everyone can take any old medicine. My mom is very sensitive to medications,

and she also reads ALL the side effects.

Yes, when my son started his Luvox, I kept a *very* close eye on him for

while. I was nervous about it, for sure.

Best.

Hi Donna,

We had in my son's 504 Plan that he could bring home all unfinished

work. Maybe you can get this put in her's. He was in 6th grade when

his OCD began (he's now 18). We also had that he could turn in work

late with no grade penalty ( " how " late varied with teachers).

OCD is never logical. Your daughter could be washing her hands all

day due to germs but then pick up some candy from the floor and eat

it. Germs/contamination doesn't have to carry over to everything,

and that includes playing in the dirt. As to logic, why just her

left hand and not her right too? I guess that I would tell the

teachers that OCD is not logical and they will just have to take your

word on what is OCD and what isn't. And I definitely have felt the

same as you regarding school personnel always taking up for each

other.

Hang in there!

YES! Like I would actually " make up " her having OCD. If they only

My 11 year old son also has a big fear of germs and the school

bathroom, but spends all recess time digging in the dirt and picking up

bits of metal. Somehow, the attraction of them outweighs the germiness.

It isn't a logical disease, if logic were working, it wouldn't be OCD.

Certainly, telling my son he's more likely to get sick picking up dirty

bits of metal than using the school bathroom won't change his behavior.

We also struggled to avoid meds, but got to the point we couldn't get

to school without them. I did have to go to my son's principal about

his teacher's behaviors and how they affected his OCD. The stress of

dealing with a teacher who punished for behaviors caused by OCD and ADD

was increasing my son's OCD.

Hi Connie,

That's typical of OCD - there is no logic to it. My daughter freaks

out if she sees a crumb on the carpet or if a little stone or blade

of grass is on the bottom of her shoe - walked around on tippy toes

for a while at school so she wouldn't get germs on her shoes - yet

ate someone else's spilt slurpy off the ground at school - work that

one out! A child might have an obsession about germs, but the

obsessions are never rational.

It all depends....

If you check the archives...you'll find a couple, at least, of

sources....

Depending on where you live...you might find various hassles.....

Here in WI, until last couple of years, one could find 190 proof vodka,

but the 190 (aka 95%) Everclear was not available...

This has changed.....

The vodka is not as rough (Brand I've had is Ambur) as the Everclear....

I dunno about 200 proof (100%) stuff.....

As far as I know, that last 5% has to be pulled out chemically.....

Commercial stills can't do that....

I could be wrong about that.....

Many EO and abs will mate with 75% (or 150 proof) alcohol....

Do *not* use denatured......

The hardware store stuff usually has a list of nasty things added to

it....

It's for thinning certain paints and other things, and works well for

that....

There's also 91% isopropyl out there.....

This is good stuff to clean things with....

I haven't read Mandy's E & A....but it's one of me Christmas presents to

meself....

I suspect you are now gonna learn how to be an NP artist....

Recipe stuff is fine....it'll get ya to somewheres near where you want

to be....

But you have to put *your* signature on it......

That's what NP is all about....

I have something I started out with Wild Turkey 101.......(50.5%).....

I've been tweaking it for about a year......

It's not *quite* right.....

Uhhhhh....it's OK.....but........

Haven't filtered it yet.....has ambrette seeds and all kindsa stuff in

it....

Civet, even....

And lots of what's been added is things in Ambur......

TIME....!

One of my other interests is ancient coins....

There's a number of ways to clean them, but the least violating method

is to soak them in olive oil....

This can take years.....

The coins taught me patience...

Silver gets through the millenia pretty well.....And if ya have a blotch

or two....

Household ammonia will get almost anything, unless it's gone to horn

silver...aka the purple yuck....

Yer screwed, then....

And even if ya get it clean, ya have to rinse it forever....

The bronzes are different.....

Acids and bases mostly only wipe them out....

Electro cleaning, same thing....

So....olive oil....long term....once a month, take them out and

toothbrush them in Dawn or Joy dish liquid dilution........

My Turkey 101 base juice has had a 2 month hiatus.....

Will be checking it soon....

Hey...EO and Essences in alky have time on their side....

P.S. I think guys should have perfumes also....

Yeah...I've seen the recent Axe or whatever commercials and such.....

Syn stuff....

Lotsa crap on the Net about pheromones....

See....it isn't *fair* if only the ladies get to smell alluring.....

Me....any lady what smells jasmine......

*WOW*....

I'll lay down me soul....

They useda hava an Old Spice Lime.....
