Guest guest
Tammy and all mentioning UTI's, Not to throw another kink into the mix, and I have been way behind on e-mails due to being out of town for Thanksgiving, but has anyone mentioned Ureteral Reflux as a possibility for the UTI's?? Have they had any tests to check for that?? Angie, Nacogdoches, TX
Guest guest
I forgot to add this ... as a child even a few years before my diagnosis of JRA (that took a few too many years ) I was not allowed to sit down in dirty bath water ..so I learned to take showers at a very early age. Doctor thought that sitting in my own dirty bath water my be exaserbating the UTI issue.... Wonder if it was just the JRA all along!!!! :):)Tree:) UTI's I've never thought about the connection between JRA & UTI's. I mentioned it a time or two, but supposed itwas just a coincidence. However, I thought it was oddthat a 3 year old would complain of her "pee-pee"burning and hurting and I never allow her to have sodaor juice high in acid content due to the UTI's she hashad in the past. We are mostly a water/milk familyanyway. I will mention it to the rheumy when we gosee her this month. Thanks! Also, we don't usebubblebath, etc. so it can't be that either!Tammy__________________________________________________
Guest guest
Oh Ray I hear that!!!! When I first had symptoms I was told by one doctor exacatly that.. that it was all in my head. This was after I presented with the cystitis and pinkeye type symptoms but nothing was in the culture to show an infection. Luckily I was able to get a good dr. right after that. I'm not sure how.. must have been God's directioin. This was a regular good ol' GP. He examined me for just a few minutes.. went out and conferred with his colleagues.. and then came back and told me he was sure I had reiters.. of course I had NO idea then what it was.. but he got me started on a good treatment. I wish he was still around.. He went to Germany with World Vision and liked it so much that he went back to Germany later. Their family adopted a son from there too. Anyway....drs. are just way to quick to pull the " in your head " thing!!! Hi Ray, i can say that when i was first told that i had Reiters some 25 years ago the doctor who explained what was wrong with me also described some of the other symptoms i would be likely to get and o boy was he right. Most of the doctors and consultants i have seen here in the UK over the years have been understanding when the subject of Reiters is mentioned in relation to any health problems i may have, and i doubt if they would be doing the job with an open mind if they didn't explore other possible ways to make any diagnoses other than Reiters. dogsbody

Guest guest
I only got this information. to pass along....I didn't make any other comments and I usually don't.... perhaps she could have a secondary infection A secondary infection is an infection that occurs during or after treatment of a primary infection. It may result from the treatment itself or from alterations in the immune system. For example, a yeast infection that occurs after antibiotic treatment of a bacterial infection is a secondary infection. The development of bacterial pneumonia following a viral upper respiratory infection is another example jenny miller <millertime31560@...> wrote: Well my daughter is 5 yrs. old so I know it is not sex and we give her plenty of water and we keep her real clean so I do not know what it is but she has been on antibotics off and on since April. They thought it may have been due to her sugar level was high but now that we have that under controlled she has another one. wrote: What You Need to Know About UTI Treatments and PreventionWhat is the Treatment for Urinary Tract Infections? Antibiotics are the usual treatment for bladder infections and other urinary tract infections. Seven to ten days of antibiotics is usually required although some infections may require only a single dose of antibiotics. It's important that all antibiotics are taken as prescribed and not discontinued before the full treatment is complete. Symptoms may disappear soon after beginning antibiotics but if the antibiotics are quit early the infection may still be present and recur. Another urine test may be ordered about a week after completing treatment to be sure the infection is cured. Tips for Preventing Urinary Tract Infections The most important tip to prevent urinary tract infections, bladder infection and kidney infections is to practice good personal hygiene. Always wipe from front to back after a bowel movement or urination, and wash the skin around and between the rectum and vagina daily. Washing before and after sexual intercourse may also decrease a woman's risk of UTI. Drinking plenty of fluids (water) each day will help flush bacteria out of the urinary system and emptying the bladder as soon as the urge to urinate occurs may also help to decrease the risk of bladder infection or UTI. Some physicians recommend urinating before and after sex as well as a mean of flushing out any bacteria that may enter the urethra during sexual intercourse. Vitamin C makes the urine acidic and helps to reduce the number of potentially harmful bacteria in the urinary tract system. Wear only panties with a cotton crotch--cotton allows moisture to escape whereas other materials may trap moisture and create a potential breeding ground for bacteria. Cranberry juice often helps to reduce frequency of bladder infections. Cranberry supplements are available over-the-counter and many women find they work amazingly quickly when an UTI has occurred, however, a physician's diagnosis is still necessary even if cranberry juice or herbals reduce pain or symptoms. If you experience frequent urinary tract infections changing sexual positions that cause less friction on the urethra may help. Some physicians prescribe an antibiotic to be taken immediately following sex for women who tend to have frequent UTIs. Things to Remember... Although urinary tract infections are common and distinctly painful they are usually easy to treat once properly diagnosed and only last a few days. When treated promptly and properly urinary tract infections are rarely serious. UTIs occur when you have candida because candida also resides in the bladder, urinary tract and kidneys, so it will also overgrow in those areas. Guest guest
Not sure if it is related to the mtx or not. My youngest daughter, who is 19 and does not have arthritis, has this same thing happen to her. I am not really sure why. Over the past year she has had a couple and ended up in the ER on one occasion. They even checked her for kidney stones, the pain was so severe so suddenly. But nothing, just the UTI. On the other occasions, she called her dr and she prescribed the antibiotics for her. Sorry not much help, I know. Hope responds well to the antibiotics and feels better soon, Michele ( 22, spondy) ________________________________ From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of michelle Sent: Friday, September 25, 2009 7:24 AM Subject: UTI's Hello everyone, I just had a quick question about urinary track infections. went to the ER last night because she suddenly started having pain in her lower abdomen and pain and blood when she urinated. Anyway they tested her urine and said she had a severe Uti. I just wondered if this was something that we can expect to see often? Does anyone else on Mehtotrexate get sudden UTI's? She didn't even have any symptoms until a few hours before we went to ER. I am just so confused. How will we know what to look for in the future if she has no symptoms until it is this bad? We even went to the Rhuemy earlier in the day and she didn't notice anything out of the ordinary either. Wierd. Guest guest
, My daughter gets frequent sinus infections. She is on enbrel and recently stopped Mtx. I am an ER nurse and I see people come in just like your daughter. It just comes out of nowhere. No burning or anything. In fact the elderly will come in with " altered mental status " and it will be a UTI at least half the time. Those things are bad. Maybe she will learn the beginning signs. I have found that kids with arthritis are so tough that it takes something BIG to get them down. Find her a good article online and let her read it. Look for the pain and burning. If this continues to be a problem, I would find her a good urologist to help in treatment. Prevention is the key. Water, water, water. I learned in nursing school that cranberry juice lowers the urines PH and makes it unhospitable for bacteria. There are some good blends out there, maybe it will help. No baths, push showers. Wipe front to back. I know gross, but it is necessary. Good luck. I hope this passes quickly and she feels much better soon. Guest guest
thank you for sharing this info - esp. cranberry juice. i've long been aware that it helps but never knew the " why's " . once i understand the " why " i'm more empowered by it.  i am 48 with fibromyalgia and never have classic signs of UTI. when my systemic pain gets unbearable and i can't think clearly, it always turns out to be strep in UTI. what you shared was of great interest - there may be others who have this " masking of symptoms " going on....until WHAM! i wish i knew WHY too.  osh (granddaughter, 13, systemic) I am an ER nurse and I see people come in just like your daughter. Guest guest
Audra, Thank you so much for your post. I agree that these kids are tough and have talked to more about what to look for in the future. Talking about it made us realize that she did have a more frequent need to go than is usual for her. Hopefully we won't miss it next time. We are also making cranberry juice a regular on the shopping list! and 16 poly -- In , " audra " <wynhama@...> wrote: > > , > My daughter gets frequent sinus infections.
