Hi Eve,

I have Lyme 26 years and have had many balance problems. I have fallen over

many times. 13 weeks ago I began a new Lyme treatment. Within 3 days the

severe headspins stopped and have not returned. There are also many other

steady improvements. Check it out at www.Lymephotos.com

I was wondering if anyone has felt a loss of balance and fallen done

because of it. I have fallen backwards so much , they think I might

have pulled a muscle because of it, does anyone know anything that

might help??...eve

Hi Flag,

I can't speak for Harold; but I can share why my balance was compormised

after my CI Surgery. My balance nerve in my left ear was destroyed during

surgery. When my balance issues did not resolve itself after 3 months I pleaded

for exercises to do at home and I did those exercises 3 times a day for 8 months

to retrain my eyes, ears and brain to work together on my balance. It took a

lot of hard work doing those exercises 3 times a day and I started seeing

progress after 3 months. Today, I feel pretty darn good even though I can't

walk unsupported in the dark, or in the surf of the ocean or on any uneven

ground. I have no regrets about losing my balance. I always did have a bit of

a sway anyway due to not seeing out of my right eye and being profoundly deaf in

both ears. Besides, I am in awe with what my CI has given me hearing wise! I

often think about what it would be like to have the right ear implanted but I

have no support to go for it unless I lose the sight in my left eye. I'm happy

with what I have now.

Thanks for sharing your experience!

Patti

to get my CI-right on September 23; however, I have had a vestibular balance

evaluation and the doctor says that my left side balance is seriously

compromised.  He is concerned that if the same thing happens to my right side

balance,  I would be left with little ability to balance myself.  Has anyone

experienced this?  How bad can it be?  Please advise.

When I lost all of my hearing in February, I lost my entire vestibular balance

system. It took my 6 weeks to relearn how to sit, stand, and walk. After 6

months, movements are becoming automatic. They say it takes 20 years for the

body/brain to relearn a " NEW " way to balance. I only have oscilopsia or bouncy

vision due to the loss.

So based on my experience, any balance can be relearned in a new way. Has that

happened with the affected ear so far? If your body is sensitive to CI

insertion/use, it would be a future concern.

I rehabbed 3-4 hours a day to get this far. It was hard work.

Also, the vestibular balance regions of the nerve/ear seem to be related as far

as my experience goes. Auditory and balance functions are co-related and

sensitive to one another.

I wish I had an answer, but I can share this experience with you...

Thanks for your story.  I have congenital vestibular malformations that

probably contributed to loss of balance following the implant on my right

side.  With the same situation on my left, I am extremely reluctant to

undertake the risk of the second implant.  Your comments only reinforce my

determination to pass on the surgery at this time.  I am doing very well with

the first CI and working in the education field;  it would be catastrophic to

not be able to work with up

to 4 years of hard work in recovery.

Maybe later.  Again thanks.
