WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 20, 2004 MOST OF US THINK LYME DISEASE IS CAUSED BY A TICK BITE, BUT WE'RE FINDING OUT THAT MAY NOT ALWAYS BE TRUE. AS ONE COLORADO SPRINGS PHYSICIAN SHOWS US, IT CAN ALSO BE EASILY MIS-DIAGNOSED. DR. DAVID MARTZ IS ABLE TO PLAY THE TRUMPET AGAIN. IT WASN'T THAT LONG AGO HE COULDN'T. LAST SUMMER HE COULD BARELY WALK. Dr. Martz: " Suddenly got very sick, was unable to get out of bed without help, could hardly walk, hurt all over. " DR. MARTZ WAS HOSPITALIZED AND UNDERWENT DOZENS OF TESTS. DOCTORS SUSPECTED HE HAD ALS (LOU GEHRIG'S DISEASE) AND GAVE HIM A YEAR OR TWO TO LIVE. THE DIAGNOSIS WAS DEVASTATING. HE WAS TESTED FOR LYME DISEASE THREE TIMES, BUT THE RESULTS WERE NEGATIVE. BUT A FRIEND OF HIS SON'S SENT HIM A NEWSPAPER ARTICLE ON A PATIENT WITH ALS -- THAT LEARNED HE HAD LYME DISEASE FROM A SPECIAL DNA TEST. DR. MARTZ TESTED POSITIVE FOR LYME BACTERIA WITH THIS NEW TEST. HE UNDERWENT SIX MONTHS OF HIGH DOSES OF IV ANTIBIOTICS. Dr. Martz: " One month later had more energy and by three months could cross legs without help, could get up from a chair without assistance and was beginning to look very much as you see me now. " TODAY HE'S AT 80 PERCENT OF HIS NORMAL CAPACITY. Dr. Martz: " Lyme experts say either lyme bacteria imitates ALS or in some patients trigger it. " THE ISSUE IS STILL BEING STUDIED. HIS DOCTOR IS A LYME DISEASE EXPERT IN HOUSTON. Dr. Bill Harvey: " This organism is like leprosy ... is slow growing in a living organism, so it has to be treated with heavy antibiotics for a long time. Antibiotics in high doses. " THIS ANTIBIOTIC TREATMENT GAVE DR. MARTZ BACK HIS LIFE AND HE WANTS OTHERS TO KNOW ABOUT IT. Dr. Martz: " I want people to be aware of the possibility that they may have lyme disease and not know it and that its hard to find the testing for it. That lyme disease can affect people with chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyelgia, several other disease we don't understand. " DR. MARTZ ENCOURAGES ALS AND CHRONIC FATIGUE PATIENTS TO GET TESTED FOR LYME DISEASE. IT'S SUSPECTED THAT LYME BACTERIA CAN BE TRANSMITTED FROM MOTHER TO CHILD AT BIRTH, OR THROUGH SEXUAL CONTACT.
