Guest guest
Hi all, I seem to be having a hell of a rough ride with this doxycycline. Anyone have a clue as to how long it should last? I'm on my fifth day and the worst symptom is severe headache followed by nausea, fatigue, and a sore throat. I'm on 200mg daily at the moment. Anyone with any ideas? I'm wondering about ringing my doc to see if the dose should be reduced to 100mg. If the above is normal I'll persevere for now. Thanks for any advice, Kezzi. . . LYME UK... Guest guest
Kezzi, Is the dosage broken up during the day? For example 100 mg intervals or 50mg intervals. I don't know the strengths they are available in. If not call the Dr and ask if you can have it in smaller strengths to tolerate it better and the herxs aren't so bad. You have to get worse sometimes before we get better. Also when you feel so crappy from the meds, you need to stop them as you are herxing. You then restart them when feeling better or worse than you are now. This was per my LLMD. Check w/your LLMD on this and he should tell you the same thing if he hasn't already. Guest guest
I felt like crap for over 6 months. I would drop back to 100mg and work your way up slowly. Otherwise it is too hard. I did 100mg for a long time, then when I went to 200mg that was too much so I did 100mg and 2-200mg on alternating days, finally got to 300mg a day. You have to get worse > sometimes before we get better. Hi , I am taking 100mg capsules twice a day. I think 100mg is the smallest strength available to me. I did expect a worsening at the start - I just didn't expect to feel so bad. This morning I feel much better and last night I had a nagging headache but it wasn't 'getting in the way' if you know what I mean. I spoke to my doc and he said the first 5 days might be rough. Anything longer than that and we may need to try something else. Anyway, today feels promising - day #6! > Also when you feel so crappy from the meds, you need to stop them as > you are herxing. I didn't know that, or it hadn't been mentioned to me before. My LLMD is so busy I could ask that question of him now and I'd be lucky to get an answer by next month. We have limited resources to such docs in the UK. In fact they are so few and far between. I'll try to get a response but would be interested in anyone else's view on this as I'm not sure about stopping abx and restarting as in the past this has always caused a major relapse. Guest guest
Kezzi It won't cause a relapse. You just stop the meds for part of the day or day. Just depends when your body recovers from the herx. When it recovers then start again. I only herx now for a few hrs and then I recover. It did take me a day in the beginning. You will either get better or worse after the herx. When you feel better restart meds or if worse than you are now that is when to start meds again. Everyone on this site will tell you this is the protocol. I know how the UK works w/drs. I am half british and the public health system is swamped. I am American so live in the USA. Guest guest
Drink a lot of water. I mean really a lot. That helps the headaches. The lemon / olive oil drink is good too. 1 whole lemon in a blender with 1/4 cup olive oil, and I add metamucil to sweeten it up. I think people are crazy if they think you can do this without herxing at all. But on the other extreme, you shouldn't push yourself too much. I would expect to feel crummy but not unbearably so; then it is the right balance of killing bugs and not making yourself miserable. Guest guest
Thanks Doris, I'm feeling much better now. Yesterday was an improvement and today I feel relatively normal. I drink a lot of spring water and tonic water (our tap water is a health hazard) but I'm prone to headache, especially cluster ones... It was all the other symptoms on top that made me feel really lousy. Anyway, I seem to be through the worst though I expect it's not going to be the last time. I have had severe chest infections for many years with lung abscesses and am no stranger to antibiotics, though each previous treatment had been for 10 days or so and then stop!! Wow... would I feel ill afterwards!! Through the worst of this one... Thanks for your mail. I'll give the lemon/olive oil drink a go too. I'm not sure about the Metamucil as I have a bowel neuropathy (oesophageal achalasia - the cause of the lung infections/abscesses) and it may contribute to the swallowing or nightly regurgitation problems though that part of my system is 'under control' at the moment Blessings, Kezzi. . . . Guest guest
Thanks , I'll do that next time... All this information is very useful. As I have said before, I am my GPs 'little Guinea-pig' - he's learning as quickly as I am so a bit of experience goes a long way. Regards, Kezzi. . . .
