Winter/Spring, 2003 Newsletter

Dear Patient;

This is the fourth in our series of Newsletters intended to keep you

informed about the practice, the

environment and how we can help you maintain health and wellness during the

change of seasons

when allergy symptoms are most bothersome.

Environmental Allergies

Environmental allergies are your body's response to substances that you

inhale in your home,

school or workplace. They can be caused by dust, animal dander, mold spores,

mildew, tree, grass,

or weed pollens. Dust and mold allergies are slightly different from pollen

allergies in that they

cause allergic symptoms all year round as opposed to simply during " seasons "

.. The exceptionally

cold and snowy winter this year has caused mold allergy symptoms including

sinusitis, headaches,

postnasal drip and fatigue to be prevalent and persistent. Sore throats,

fever, " cerebral fog " and ear

infections have also been prevalent and may be due to environmental

allergies or from the common

winter flu. If you are persistently experiencing any of the above symptoms,

please call our office

to make an appointment for testing so that we can help you identify and

desensitize from the

offending allergens with immunotherapy drops.

For spring allergy symptoms which primarily encompass sensitivities to trees

and grasses, it is best

to get a head start on your immunotherapy drops by beginning sometime in

late February. Then

when spring arrives, you will have undergone immunotherapy desensitization

for a month or so,

and your symptoms should be minimal. If they persist, adjustments will be

made to the allergen

concentration delivered which will further help to relieve bothersome

symptoms. Additionally,

compliance with your immunotherapy drops is important and should be a

priority along with your

other hygiene and daily health routines.

Westport Medicals Arts, LLC Practice News

Most of you have become accustomed to the unique Listen System allergy

testing that Dr. Caprio

initiated a decade ago. You will be pleased to know that we have recently

installed the new 2003

updated version of the Listen System called the Orion System. The Orion

System is a highly sensitive

state of the art computerized system designed to be even more accurate in

the detection of

environmental allergies, sensitivities, and intolerances. We are excited to

be on the " cutting edge "

of bioelectric diagnostic testing and believe it will greatly benefit your

general health and wellness.

The new Orion System which has replaced the Listen System for allergy

testing, is a more accurate

diagnostic device.

Dr. Sabovic and I attended the International Lyme and Associated Diseases

conference in New

Jersey in November, 2002, where we had the opportunity to listen to a

variety of national and

international lecturers on the prevalence, diagnosis and treatment of Lyme

Disease in the United

States. The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease is

currently funding a major study

to further investigate the identification and treatment of chronic Lyme

Disease. This degree of scientific

interest is critically necessary to unravel the many nuances which accompany

Lyme Disease

treatment. We were also fortunate to be invited to the Lyme Disease Fund

Raiser which took place

in Manhattan. We viewed New York City from the water while listening to Dr.

Sam Donta,

Director of Biomolecular Medicine at Boston University, speak on chronic

Lyme Disease treatment.

Thankfully new and highly specialized diagnostic techniques are on the

horizon. We will continue

to keep abreast of any new developments in this area and introduce them to

the practice.

On February 1, 2003, Dr. Fallon's research group from Columbia

University's Department of

Psychiatry spent the day at our office conducting a free Lyme Disease

Testing clinic under a

National Institutes of Health research grant. The purpose of this clinic was

to identify and recruit

chronic Lyme patients for further investigation and treatment. We were very

pleased that our practice

was selected to contribute to this important scientific endeavor.

As always, Dr. Sabovic and I continue to believe that high quality medicine

must be delivered in a

gentle and safe environment. We hope your health maintenance experience with

us reflects this, as

your health and well being is our most important priority. We wish you all a

happy and healthy

spring 2003.

Sincerely,

Zijad Sabovic, MD
