I have a question that maybe someone can answer...

I started on prednisone 10 mg/day a little over a week ago. I have been

having symptoms of diabetes (increased thirst, increased urine output) and

have checked my bloodsugar level using a machine at work. My blood sugar was

209 last night a couple of hours after I ate. It came back down to 89 within

about 4 hours.

My question: should I call my doctor about this, or is this just the normal

result of taking prednisone? What have you all experieced? I hate to run to

the Dr. with every little thing.

Your ideas are appreciated. Jo from N. CA

My internist sent me for an oral glucose tolerance test and I had also been

on 10 mg of Prednisone. I did not have any symptoms-just a lot of nausea and

extreme fatigue. My glucose dropped to 41 and I felt pretty horrible. I

would let your doctor know. I will see an endocrinologist next week. I'm

not sure if it was from the Prednisone or the AIH. It seems with liver

disease we also have several other problems-like I have high

cholesterol-can't be controlled by diet they told me. Then some of the

cholesterol lowering meds can cause liver enzymes to rise and mine are high

enough so they decided to let this doctor see what he could do.

Susie,

My glucose is usually a little bit elevated except when they do a fasting

glucose test. Then it's been in normal ranges. However, it did go up to a

dangerous level briefly. I also have off and on high cholesterol and

always high triglycerides, but that goes with the disease. I was told that

I definitely can't take meds for lowering cholesterol, though Zocor has

done wonders for my husband. No one seems to worry much about the

elevations. I think that as long as the readings don't go totally out of

sight (too high or too low) it's something to be expected. However, that

low glucose would worry me. Sounds like your doctor is concerned or he

wouldn't have sent you to an endocrinologist. I hope it's a problem they

can control quickly.

Take care,

Jo,

Isn't a rise then an extreme drop in blood sugar an indicator of possible

hypoglycemia? It seems that I read that years ago. I read that eating

will cause blood sugar to rise but when a person is hypoglycemic, the blood

sugar then " crashes " and drops very low. You should definitely ask your

doctor about that. Anything to do with blood sugar levels make me nervous

but I know just about nothing about them.

Take care,

Geri

Remember a few weeks ago you suggested I find a new doctor-preferably

female-well I did. I met with her for 30 minutes and she was very

understanding especially with the seriousness of my depression along with the

liver disease. I feel she will be helpful-she graduated in 1995 from IU med

school. She is just developing her practice and I feel she has more time to

spend with me. She also said I wouldn't have to continue running from Dr to

Dr to have answers to my questions-she would get them for me from the

different doctors-she will coordinate the care instead of me busting my @#@#@

trying to figure out who to go to for answers! I see the endocrinologists on

the 14th of May-hopefully I will have answers about the extreme fatigue-maybe

it's because of the blood sugar being too low.

I also have a question for anyone: Does anybody besides me get extremely

tired after eating a meal-not a big meal just a regular meal. It's so odd

but most of the time I feel like I have to lay down!!! Sometimes I just feel

so #(*$(# ing lazy!!!! I remember when I took A & P in college one of the

professors said if you were tired after eating you probably had something

wrong with your liver.

My 15 year old daughter is now having problems with depression also. She

started struggling in school and can't concentrate and just says she thinks

all the time. I know all to well about all of it. I believe it is

hereditary. She goes to a Lutheran high school and they have been so

supportive of her and me. She had to drop her algebra class and she's going

to a partial program for teens-she is still dealing with divorce issues and

my illness-so much for a 15 year girl. As depressed as I have been recently

I felt really good that I could still be here for my daughter and support and

love her-made me feel like life is definitely worth living! I may not be

able to work right now but together we get a lot done. For mother's day my

kids are helping me paint the kitchen. My 2 kids also cleaned the garage for

me-what great kids! When you suffer with this awful fatigue they can't

believe how wonderful it is for the help they give me! I hope you and all

the mothers have a great day!

Susie,

My uncle is a prominant physician in Japan. He specializes in diet and how

it effects our health, getting diseases and such. He sent my mom info on

AIH, unfortunately all in Japanese, but one thing my mother did make sure to

tell me is that he suggest I lie down for 20 -30 minutes everytime I eat. It

sounds impossible to do with a busy life, but I am willing to try anythihng

to help. I hope to have his articles translated by my mom soon so I can hear

what else he recommends. I know he travels around the world speaking and has

several books printed so I am looking forward to hearing his input.

I am tired all the time. No matter what time of day or what I eat.

You sound like you have a great family. Painting the kitchen. I have to do

the painting if I want it done.

My daugher is 15 and if you want her to write back and forth on the e-mail to

your daughter about everday stress it would be ok. My daughter is so

supported and ofcourse she also has her bad days. But most of the time she

is great.

My husband is not very supported of me and he is gone alot with his job and

different commitees he is on so it is like and I are alone. But we

don't mind because he is not yelling at us!!!

Susie,

I've thought about you often since you last posted. I'm so happy for you

that you've found a caring and interested doctor. Even my husband has

noticed that women doctors seem to be able to listen better than their men.

Maybe some male doctors are uncomfortable with dealing with emotional

factors.

Although fatigue goes with liver disease and/or the meds, the depression is

something else and too often the cause is clinical, not psychological.

Many medications can cause depression and definitely, hypoglycemia can.

With the right doctors, hopefully now you'll get some answers that are long

overdue and also some of the attention that you deserve.

I haven't noticed getting tired after eating but I do tend to fall asleep

is I sit down and relax anytime of the day. That's because I could keep

going for 18 hours at a stretch since I don't allow myself to take it easy

most of the time. I almost inevitably get a headache after I eat dinner

and my glucose levels are usually fine. Have you had that problem?

Your daughter might be worried about you though she possibly doesn't

recognize that about herself. My nephew was still living with us when I

was very sick and often I'd wake up from one of those fatigue induced

sleeps to find him watching me anxiously from my bedroom doorway. I

realized that he was making sure I was still alive! Poor kid, first his

father died (he didn't know his mother) then his grandmother, who raised

him, died. When we became his " parents " we naturally became his world and

it must have looked like it was all going to happen over again. Does your

daughter's school have any kind of grief counseling program? Some high

schools do and they address many issues, not just death. But, it's good to

talk to whoever runs the program to make sure that it wouldn't be too

negative for her.

What a nice bunch of kids you have! One of our sons is coming to visit us

next month and told me to make a list of the things we need done around

here. He assured me that he loves to do " handyman " type jobs. We've

always been the ones who have done things for our kids and have never asked

or let them do anything for us. It hasn't been easy to accept the fact

that we now need help, but we're learning. I've seen too many examples of

family members who stay away because they don't know how to deal with

illness of a loved one.

Take care and keep in touch. Especially, let us know about whatever the

Endocrinologist tells you.

I know eastern medicine treats diseases like ours somewhat differently.

Please share with the group your uncle's suggestions, once you get them

Hi Susie,

My daughter is also 15. My family has a history of depression, so I was not

surprised when I started noticing serious signs in her. To make a long story

short, she has been taking anti-depressants for about 2 years. She just took

her ACT's (college entrance exams) and scored a 32 (99th percentile), has

tons of friends, and in general, is very well adjusted. She also sees a

psychologist a couple of times each month, which has proven to be very

helpful. Most of the times she echoes what I have been saying, but it's nice

to have a neutral 3rd party tell her that you are right! has her own

poetry web site & I'm sure she would enjoy writing to your daughter. I'll

send her e-mail addy privately if you are interested.

Yes, I have both. The liver disease for " years " so the Dr. says and the

diabetes was diagnosed for sure in January and is getting worse. My hunch is it

is my liver helping it out? All my important counts were " up " this time. I am

tested every three months, this is the first time in 4 years anything has gone

up. Yes it is a pain, trying to figure out what to eat and what not to eat, and

I have a ton of food allergies as well. I think I need a nutritionist or

dietician, too much for this old mind to figure out. I think it is probably

best to go on a diabetic diet and then take away the allergy stuff, sounds good

to me. Lynn

Dear Lynn:

I'm in Seattle area and was recently referred to a nutritionist who

specializes in liver disease. I have my appointment on the 30th. Since I

have blood sugar issues too, she's going to address that as well. I'll let

you all know how is goes. Since you're in the area, you might consider

seeing her too. She works for the hepatology department at the UW, so I'm

not sure whether you'd have to get referral there or not. I'll try to find

out.

there towards the coast. I could have someone drive me there. Lynn

I AM diabetic Lee, but with type II, and Am unable to take any meds because of

an irregular heart rate, so my blood sugar is always too high and never too low.

Yes, I have diabetes because of the prednisone. Not to say that

I would not have gotten it later in life (I had gestational diabetes 20

years ago).

I take two different drugs to help control it. When the prednisone

level drops - it is easier to control the blood sugar. I had a really

difficult time at 15mg and 10mg. I'm now at 10/5mg and my blood sugar

numbers are great.

I have been on prednisone since Dec 98 - prednisone ranges from 40mg

to 10/5mg.--

Hope this helps

Hello all.

Recents labs show a glucose level of 244. Its highly suspected that

I now have diabetes. I go in for fasting blood work in the morning and

follow up with my primary M.D. later in the day.

Anyone with diabetes as a result of Prednisone use (I'm going on 3 yrs)?

Or just diabetes in general? I'm really not familiar with the disease.
