Guest guest
Zahavi,My doctor who prescribed LDN also told me to take Alpha Lipoic Acid daily. I questioned that when I read your email regarding Dr. Berkson. I researched it on the web and found this:Alpha Lipoic Acid is very beneficial and no wonder many people are taking it as a supplement. But there are a few things you have to know before purchasing Alpha Lipoic Acid supplements. If you look at the label of conventional lipoic acid supplements, you’ll see just “lipoic acid” or “alpha lipoic acid” and the number of milligrams per capsule. What the label won’t tell you is that you’re actually getting a 50/50 mixture of two different, mirror-opposite isomers of lipoic acid in such supplements. When a molecule exists in just two isomers, and those isomers are one another’s exact opposites – as is the case with lipoic acid – the two isomers are called “enantiomers.” Of the two isomers of alpha lipoic acid present in conventional supplements, the enantiomer which is identical to the one made by living things for their use – the natural form of alpha lipoic acid – is the “R(+)-enantiomer,” or “ R(+)-alpha lipoic acid”(R ALA). “S(-)-alpha lipoic acid” is a purely artificial molecule: it does not exist in nature but is produced as a byproduct in the normal method of producing commercial lipoic acid. The S(-) form that is taking up 50% of your supplement is not just a weaker cousin of the real thing. In fact it is the evil twin. In some cases the S(-) form is simply less effective than R ALA, but there are also cases where the S(-) enantiomer actually conteracts the benefits of the R ALA.So, in order for you to take full advantage of the Alpha Lipoic Acid supplementation, make sure you get R Alpha Lipoic Acid (R ALA).Another detail you have to pay attention to is whether the R ALA is stabilized or not. But this would make a subject of a different article. Is this what Dr. Berkson meant when he said it is contaminated from the process? Do you think it's okay to take if you make sure the bottle says R ALA & stablized?I appreciate your opinion! On Feb 26, 2010, at 11:57 AM, zahavi wrote:dr berkson is against R-ALA because it is contaminated from the process
Guest guest
Thank you Zahavi,It seems it's good to take oral ALA but not oral R-ALA. For everyone's information Dr. Berkson says it you do take ALA you must take B-complex vitamins or you could get cancer. On Feb 26, 2010, at 4:12 PM, zahavi wrote:here you can hear dr berkson at the last ldn confernce answer a question about R-ALA.he said that he was told by the german producent that there is no way to make R-ALA without the leftover of the poisons that are used in the process.he does not give it to his patient and he did not want to write article about it because it is not pure product.he recomends ALA with german matrials like they make in metabolic maintenance
