Nerve pain

Hi ! Hope you feel better!

did was trip and i could feel the pressure in my back. I'm sick of

going out in public, I feel like a toddler does when they are

process. Thursday i go to PT for the TENS unit, I'm so hoping for

Thanks Things seem to be getting better, the TENS unit doesnt take away all pain but it cuts it in half for at least an hour. ill take anything right now

aint that the truth.. i think its even working better, i can go 2 hrs on the TENS unit and go 1 1/2 with out much pain. But i'm also on new meds so that could also be the reason. i hope everyone is feeling ok.

I was looking into a canadian approved drug, pennsiaid (sp?) anyway

its dmso plus an nsaid, thus tho its a drug its local, for a friend

who has arthritis in his feet.

I also have return of bouts of severe nerve pain. Some is in feet, and I get

some relief there from Ketamine Gel. Have considered returning to Neurontin

but do not want to!

My Osteopath says I have compressed nerves in shoulders from spasm, discs,

and inflammation.

Anything to report on non-drug relief of nerve pain ??

My late son was on Neurontin for years for seizure control, which it did not

do and the side effects were bad.

The amino acid, GABA, is what Neurontin is patterend after. NOW foods has a

product called GABA relaxer with inositol to help absorption.

I used to have spasms severe enough to pull the vertebrae out of alignment.

MAGNESIUM with it's cofactor, B6, were primarily responsible for my lessened

spasms for the past four years. I have added the GABA and found that to

also be beneficial on many levels.

Hi, Pain has finally gotten better. Found out that it was a very small blood clot that had come loose and that was causing the pain. The EMT said it was like having a heart attack in my foot and leg. It is unusual to feel any pain when that happens or so the doc's say. The EMT just laughted and said you should know by now that nothing is normal about her.The EMT is a long time friend and he took me to his Doc and his Doc wouldn't take any money. I sat right ther and cried. Miracles do Happen lyl

I'm also fused to S1 (T4-) and since that time I've had terrible pain in my

right side, though not all the way to my foot. My surgeon says that 25% of the

people fused to S1 have problems due to the screws in our pelvis and have to

have it removed once we're healed. 2 years is the soonest he'll perform this

minor surgery. I'm 7 months away and counting. Another woman who posts on this

forum had pain and was completely fine once the long screws were taken out. Just

a thought.

I am fused from T4 to S1 and was told that there has been nerve damage at L5/S1

and that is what is causing nerve pain in my right leg and foot. Scar tissue

has also developed around the nerves and it contributes to the problem. In

addition to pain, my foot is also completely numb. It sounds crazy to have

numbness and pain, but the pain is referred pain from my spine.

I have had several epidurals to relieve nerve pain but they did not work. I

just put up with it and take pain meds when the pain is really severe. An EMG

test should be able to pinpoint the source of nerve pain. The doc sticks

needles in the leg and the readout shows which nerves are damaged and causing

pain.

Hope this helps, and I empathize with anyone who has this kind of pain. It's

the worst.

If your pain is coming from nerves (maybe consult a rheumatologist to make that

determination), then there's a medication that definitely helps called

Gabapentin, designed to treat neuropathy

If your pain is coming from nerves than a replacement may not help you at all.

You should definitely get an xray or mri to find out exactly what is going on.

Also you should find another surgeon. Age is not a reason for not doing a

replacement if it's necessary. And if the pain is indeed from a nerve then

painkillers may not help all that much no matter how many you take.

Hi. I'm not new to the group, but have just been 'listening' so far, because I

thought my knee reoplacement was still far off in the future. I've been very

interested in hearing all your different experiences.

Recently my knee pain has become worse; a sort of nerve pain (much like the pain

when I had an abscess in my tooth...) but only in certain positions, like

driving and trying to sleep on my side. The rest of the time my knee feels tired

and achy or like it has a tight elastic band around it.

I have no swelling, no redness, no heat, just pain that painkillers don't touch.

I have talked to my doctor several times, got exercises from the physio and seen

a specialist. All of them say I'm too young for a knee replacement (52) and I

should just take strong painkillers. I have not been sent for a scan.

I hate taking any medication, but find i'm not being taken seriously because i

don't take buckets full of pain meds.

Has anyone else got the pain without the swelling and redness? Has anyone had a

TKR at my age? I'd love to hear your opinions. I live in the UK. Thanks!

I'm going thru a horrid round of sciatic pain right now. The Ortho finally

put me on the gabapentin for the incredible nerve pain and he supplemented

it with oxycodone. After 2 months of slowly working myself up to a " under

control " dose on the gabapentin, I have stopped the oxycodone and finally

(stress finally) have relief from the nerve pain. Nerve pain is wicked and

normal pain meds will not help, or didn't help me.

I would not rush into taking neurontin/gabapentin at all, but you should

definitely get a second opinion about what is going on with your knee. Something

could be compressing the nerve, causing irritation to the nerve and there could

be a simple fix. The longer you wait with an injured nerve the poorer the

prognosis is for it healing completely.

As for neurontin, there are terrible side effects with that drug because like

most nerve pain meds, they affect your neurotransmitters. I took gabapentin due

to nerve pain from surgery and suffered terrible side effects, which lasted more

than a year after I was weaned off the drugs. These side effects included

significant insomnia and memory loss.

Oh that's terrible Rose, I haven't ever had any side effects from it except

for when I wanted to take myself off them and didn't do it slowly, had

consequences from that, but had no trouble while on them I took them for

about 3 years I don't now as my chronic pain is 90% better on its own.,

It is not without side effects and warnings:

Suicidal Behavior and Ideation

Antiepileptic drugs (AEDs), including Neurontin, increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or behavior in patients taking these drugs for any indication. Patients treated with any AED for any indication should be monitored for the emergence or worsening of depression, suicidal thoughts or behavior, and/or any unusual changes in mood or behavior.

This drug is known to be substantially excreted by the kidney, and the risk of toxic reactions to this drug may be greater in patients with impaired renal function. Because elderly patients are more likely to have decreased renal function, care should be taken in dose selection, and dose should be adjusted based on creatinine clearance values in these patients

Perhaps one would try a gluten-free diet along with alpha-lipoic-acid and B vitamins as this therapy has been shown to help with nerve pain without the toxic effects of a medication.

What therapies does Dr.Weil recommends for neuropathy?Your first step should be a general medical checkup to determine if an underlying disease or injury is the cause of your symptoms, and if so, to determine its nature. Your doctor should do complete blood work and may refer you to a neurologist who will probably do an EMG (electromyelogram) to assess muscles and nerve conduction. If you have no underlying disease, you can try one or all of the following strategies:

Take one B-100 B-complex vitamin daily. The B vitamins are necessary for normal nerve function, and supplementing is a good preventive measure. Do not take more than 200 mg of B-6, as higher daily doses can actually cause symptoms of neuropathy. Take 100 mg of alpha-lipoic acid daily. This antioxidant protects microcirculation to the nerves. You can gradually increase the dose to 300 mg twice a day over the next month.

another interesting thing is that gabapentin is a neuroleptic (used for seizures). it can work really well for some people with bipolar disorder. i knew a woman who said that the only time she felt "normal" was when she took gabapentin. unfortunately, she couldn't stay as thin as she was when she was 18, so she wouldn't take it. too bad. many psychiatrists don't even consider it. ridiculous.

have they done a spinal tap? I'd be interested in the pressure of his spinal

fluid. also is his renal function ok? none of the scans showed stones or any

ducts clogged?

Subject: Nerve Pain

Hi All,

My son is currently in the hospital and has been since Tuesday. He started out a

month ago with stabbing pain in his mid-back when swallowing, It got really bad

and we ended up in the ER, went through a chest x-ray, blood work, PE study and

nothing found. 2 days later he was starting to feel better and went to

basketball practice-came home with severe chest pain, racing heart, high blood

pressure. Our thought at the time was a new med he was taking so he stopped it

and the heart rate and blood pressure came down but the chest pain and back pain

swallowing stayed. Ended up back in the ER - chest x-ray, blood work, EKG, all

normal.

Went to the doc about every three days over two and half week period, as pain

did not subside, received abdominal CT w/contrast, ultrasound of spleen and

pancreas, MRI of spine additional blood work, 10 days of ceftin. Pain still in

chest and back when swallowing, severe pain and tenderness in chest but now

worst in ribs, lost 10 lbs this last 4 weeks, tried anti-virals, prednisone,

levaquin. So our doc said admit him to hospital and he has had bone scan; which

is clean. Received endoscopy today which looked completely normal. But when he

came back from the endoscopy he was doubled over in pain. He said it was way

worse then before and he had a horrible migraine, two doses of dilauded, a

percocet and zofran he fell asleep.

So after all that they are thinking nerve pain. I know he can't go home in this

much pain as he has been on pain killers almost non-stop over the last month.

Anybody run into anything like this before??

He's also currently off of IVIG, due to go back on next month.
