Guest guest
My 70 lb. 11 yo daughter (undifferentiated IBD--UC/Crohn's of colon) started ldn in October. She has always been very sensitive to medications and her GI has not worked with it before, so we discontinued the azathioprine (immune suppressant) and started 1 mg for 2 weeks, 1.5 for 4 weeks, 2.5 for 4 weeks, then switched to transdermal at 3 mg 5 wks ago (concerned she wasn't getting the absorption she needed and the compounder had used lactose as a filler instead of avicel which had been specified.) We still have not seen a significant improvement, (continued diarrhea 9-12 x/day) in fact she just had several days last week of diarrhea 20+/times a day and episodes of blacking out. It has since slowed back to 11-12 x/day and no black outs since the weekend, only occasional bleeding. She developed strange rashes on her foot when starting (became infected the first time leading to antibiotics) and with each of the dosage increase that lasted about 10 days, however, it has been constantly there, but at a milder level, at the 3 mg dose. She is dealing with joint pain as well (probably related to the IBD.) She had sleep disturbances for 2 weeks at each dose increase and constantly since on 3 mg (hard to fall asleep, sleep walking/talking). We started giving melatonin at the 3 mg level so she could get some sleep, it has not been too "transient". We tested without the melatonin a couple days ago and she can't fall asleep without it.She had been on very strict (and limited--she didn't tolerate many foods) SCD for 28 months. With the ldn, we stopped using honey and switched to stevia, and have added in natural antifungals (candex, olive leaf, extract, now horopito) to minimize possible yeast overgrowth reaction. Since we reached the 2 year mark on SCD without the hoped for improvement, we did decide to start adding in limited amounts of non-gluten starches (potatoes, basmati, and oatmeal) about 3 weeks ago. We also backed off the red meat and switched to more salmon and chicken trying to reduce the acid load and inflammatory fats on her body. She does get probiotics from 24 hr yogurt. I have some Absorbplus shake on the way to try to regain the lost weight and energy. We had used it 3 years ago during/after a flare and it was useful since she could digest it before it rushed through her system.I'm wondering if the ldn dosage is too high for her, or if it just flipped things too fast from immune suppression for the past few years to immune stimulation and her body is over-reacting. I would love any insight, recommendations, or similar experiences. If ldn doesn't work we are pretty much left with remicade which we are definitely trying to avoid. We have consulted with more people/modalities (western medicine, Chinese medicine/acupuncture, chiropractic, naturopathic nutritionist, homeopathic, cranio-sacral, body talk...) than I can remember and read/tried so many dietary variations/restrictions, we really want to make this work, but can't sit by much longer.Dawn.
