Guest guest
-- Ataxia Hi All, Does anyone know about, have worked on, or heard of any NF or nutritional treatment for Ataxia?? Lori/Brainworks/Alaska Hi Lori, I currently have two patients with ataxia. One is an adult female whose motor functioning has been impaired since birth but whose progression in loss of functioning is stable. She stumbles more and has greater balance problems when stressed or socially fearful...such as going in front of a crowd. We have worked for several sessions on deep relaxation using Brainmaster 2.0 She feels more positive, more competent, and better able to handle her balance and leg movement when she does weekly NF in this modality. She's been " on holiday " from training for about 2 months but has continued therapy with a lot of support to maintain a predictable daily routine and to be sure she gets enough rest. She has always tried to maintain a lot of exercise as she fears loss of function so this is not a problem. Nutritionally...less red meat, more chicken...broiled etc...fresh grilled or steamed veggies, some fresh fruits but better poached than raw as she has IBS symptoms that are more likely autonomic effects of the Ataxia complicated by gall bladder surgery and rapid transit of food incompletely digested. Another adult patient is severely affected by an ataxia of unknown origin. His brain activity on NF at C3, C4, and Cz is lively but well distributed across frequencies with elevated Theta as might be expected. He is losing ground with frequent falls and poor energy primarily because he's been sitting in a quiet, clean home where his elderly mother does everything for him. NF SMR has been both relaxing and energizing for him. I have included guided relaxation during training using my hand initially to place sensory awareness on the body area on which to focus breath and energy. He can do this on his own now. I note straightened posture occurring within 10 minutes of a 20 minute NF practice (without prompting). The dilemma is it is not often enough and he needs occupational therapy at home daily but it's not available in the frontier town where he lives. He now has agreed to move more frequently during the day and to assist...even if slowly...in household tasks. He desperately needs to keep motor function intact and active to slow progression of cortical atrophy already present. I am making no pretense of treating the neurological conditions for these folks, just trying to relieve the incongruences and associated stress with the NF. Guest guest
You are welcome Lori. I hope this is of help. I would be interested in learning of any approaches you discover that may also help stabilize and/or improve functioning.
