Sorbitol can definitely cause gas and stomach pain because it is not absorbed well by the body. This used to happen to me when I chewed sorbitol sweetened chewing gum. Avoid sorbitol completely. It is an artificial sweetener and a neurotoxin.

Sorbitol may not be a good option for many people but it is not an " artificial "

sweetener. Although I rarely ingest it, I have never had a problem with it. I

have also never seen it listed as a neurotoxin but would like to know if indeed

it is. Could you please direct me to where I can verify this information.

Sugar substitute and artificial sweeteners are not necessarily the same thing.

Find below the difinition from wikipedia.

Sorbitol is a sugar substitute. Sorbitol is referred to as a nutritive sweetener

because it provides dietary energy: 2.6 kilocalories (11 kilojoules) per gram

versus the average 4 kilocalories (17 kilojoules) for carbohydrates. It often is

used in diet foods (including diet drinks and ice cream), mints, cough syrups,

and sugar-free chewing gum.

It also occurs naturally in many stone fruits and berries from trees of the

genus Sorbus.[1]

Sorbitol also may aggravate irritable bowel syndrome,[8] and similar

gastrointestinal conditions, resulting in severe abdominal pain for those

affected, even from small amounts ingested
