Guest guest
Hi, I'm an air traffic controller with Crohn's disease and my doctor and I are discussing the possibity of giving LDN a try. However, the FAA has some pretty strict medication restrictions when it come to maintaining a medical clearance, which I must do. When I asked the flight surgeon about LDN, naltrexone specifically, they said that regular naltrexone was acceptable buy that naltrexone HCL was not. I can't find any info on the difference between the two. Is there a non-HCL naltrexone? Is is the same as thar used in LDN? Wikipedia says naltrexone is marketed generically as HCL salt, implying that all naltrexone is HCL but the flight surgeon insisted there is a non HCL version. ????? Guest guest
, the flight surgeon must be speaking about methylnaltrexone bromide, it does not cross the blood/brain barrier. However Methylnaltrexone Bromide is an analgesic, ie pain killer. I do not believe it works in any form like Naltrexone hypercholoride, HCL. I would think a pain killer, analgesic could be sedating, and may impair your senses. but then again, the methyl does not cross the blood/brain barrier. Have you spoken w/ the flight surgeon, about the small dosage you will be taking. Half life is said to be four hours and thirteen minutes, If you took a dose eight hours before going on duty, Your body would have only twenty five percent remaining, and roughly twelve hours post, twelve and half percent. Wow way over my head. Certainly don't take any of this to the bank. Just trying to help. I am hoping you can get all this cleared up and get on LDN stay well, david a [low dose naltrexone] LDN HCL??? Guest guest
Is the ATC list the same as for pilots? The list here: http://www.leftseat.com/medcat1.htm has nothing that resembles naltrexone. It is unfortunate that its utility in management of autoimmune diseases is strictly off label, as its primary use- for combating opiates addiction- would raise some eyebrows if it came to light somehow (written or oral disclosure, or a whiz test). Worse, reasoning with anyone at the FAA about halflife and so forth would be a bureaucratic headache. Naltrexone and naltrexone HCl appear to be the same drug; it's probably crashed out of solution during synthesis with chloride (maybe as hydrochloric acid), so the conjugate salt is never removed. See the molecular diagram on this page: http://www.drugs.com/pro/naltrexone.html The little " * HCl " means it's not really part of the molecule, it's just.... there. Look up " tetracycline HCl, " and you'll see the same thing. It's no different from tetracycline in a structural sense. Given the small dose (1/15th that used in addiction), it may not even be a flag on a urine panel after several half-lives. -AJ > > , the flight surgeon must be speaking about methylnaltrexone bromide, it does not cross the blood/brain barrier.
