That is also the reason cysts / l-forms are less vulnerable to ABX (little activity / no cell wall etc.). the tricky part is that we don't know what the 'growth phase' is. Why do many lymies have a 4-5 week cycle, while Bb has a 10-20 hour reproduction time? One would expect them to be replicating all the time unless they are fully synchronized throughout the body (possible because of quorum sensing, but I doubt it). Would be good to know what this 4-5 week 'cycle' is about, my guess it is the average time they need to produce new surface antigens similar to the 1-2 week cycle in relapse fever spirochetes. Having new antigens will start a new immune respons with clear effects for the patient. The idea of ABX is that you will kill some % with every growth cycle, so you need say 100 cycles to kill 99% (and the immune system has the kill the last remaning few). With Bb this takes much longer than with normal bacteria, because of the long growth cycle (normal bacterial cycle is in the order of 10 minutes). > Not sure if that's the case with Buhner herb protocol, but suppose so because of the high doses and length of time he recommends taking them. I plan to start naturopathic treatment including herbs after antibiotics (6 months of orals so far, in spring going IV). I don't think this applies to herbs because they don't specifically target the growth/replication machinery. I think the action of herbs might depend more on cycles of the human body, because a lot of its action is indirectly through our immune system. Because the herbs don't 'kill', I would guess you need to use them at least as long as a few lifespans of BB, which could be on the order of a month or so (cysts have a lifespan of over a year ...).
