The cortisone, or steroid shot, does seem to help some people I have talked

to who have back problems. I have had seven Epidural steroid injections in

my thoracic and lumbar area, none of which have helped. After a lumbar facet

injection, my lower back pain actually increased. There is always some risk

involved especially when injecting around the spine. The good thing about

local steroid injections is that you don't have to worry about the systemic

effects of the steroid since it doesn't enter the blood stream to the extent

oral steroids would.

They are worth a shot because they do help reduce the inflammation and pain

for some people who have the shots. You don't know if it will work for you

until you try one.

With my neck...when it goes into severe spasm and my usual meds don't work, I

head for the ER or my doc and get them. It helps to break the spasm. I get the

shots about every 2-6 months, depending on how bad (and how often) I have abused

my neck.

Mixed reaction, and depends how done. I had a series of 3 series of

epidurals (9) in all, didn't do much. I then starte what is called

selective root nerve blocks, same concept, but they inject where the

nerve root coming out of the spine is (or believed to be, its also

used diagnosticly, if it helps, they know they have the right area).

They were done very precisely in a CT scan and hurt like hell, only

use local because they are trying to recreate the pain...helped a

lot, probably had them every 3-4 months for 2 years until I finally

broke down and had surgery.

If you go for straight epidurals make sure they are at least using

some type of x-ray or fluroscope...mine were done " blind " . I think I

have read somewhere there is a 50/50 chance of them helping, worth a

shot (pardon the pun)

Anyone have experience with a sholder injection with cortizone? After many

years it is my onl recourse for the pain. I know you should not use steroids

with Lyme but this will be a one time injection to be out of disabling pain. I

have heard pros and cons. I have tried every tx available until now and it will

not get better on its own

I wanted to respond to you and et you know what happened to me. I had a

cortosone shot for my shoulder May 08 and within 7 weeks the migrains

started. For me, this was all my system needed to fail against the bugs.

They took over from that point on. It appears the shot supressed my immune

system enough to tip the scales the other way.

Was I sick before then - yes. I believe that my system was just strong

enough to hold it's own against the Lyme. Until the shot.

Last Nov, I had surgery finally for my shoulder. I would never do another

shot - for me it was just not good at all.

So the first thing I would ask is have you had an MRI? Because, if you have

a tear, the shot will only mask the pain but the tear cannot mend. That's

why I chose surgery - my body couldn't get better on it's own. I have

always kept taking my Cat's claw and glutithione!

Hi Kathy,

I had a cortizone injection in my elbow for tennis elbow (this was before I was

diagnosed with Lyme) and that's what sent things spinning out of control for me.

Do you know what is wrong with your shoulder? By the way the only thing that

helped my tennis elbow was when the Rheumy I saw who said it couldn't be lyme

and must be a false positive WB gave me a Rx for Doxy for 3 weeks, after the 3

weeks I did show great improvement and could finally function again.
