Guest guest
Could you spray the jungle patch? Rita [ ] Re: ticks & cats In asking the question about ticks and cats I wasn't so much concerned for the cats getting infected as much as not wanting them to carry the ticks on the house where I'd get bitten again. It's not that I neglect my cats. I have read that cats do not typically get Lyme Disease. Both I and one of my cats are chemically sensitive, so that I' m concerned about how often I spray them with flea and tick killer. Even though it's a " natural " lower toxicity spray I worry about it. There's a kind of jungle patch in the back yard of my apartment bldg, full of tall weeds. Both cats love it in there, a natural place for ticks to reside. In 20 years of living in this Massachusetts town where my cats have lived in dune grass as well as wooded and weed patch areas, I have never seen a tick on them. Although 3 years ago I woke up with six bites on my leg -- which looked exactly like the marks ticks used to leave on my dog -- and thought the only way I could have gotten them would be for the cats to bring in a tick which dropped on the bed. But who knows? Maybe I had been wearing socks and walked through some brush the day before. Had no fear or consciousness about ticks then. Sigh. Bluesky > my vet says that cats cannot get lyme, i asked him because i had lyme and i wanted to know what to look forif she got it, and he said you can't
Guest guest
The problem with Frontline besides its possible toxicity is that it only kills the tick once it bites the cat. So your cat could bring in ticks which could end up on you when you handle the cat. My cat sleeps on the couch, my bed etc. He's also been bitten 3 times by neighborhood cats, I think he may be infected with bartonella because he periodically has a warm, dry nose, low energy and sleeps much more than usual. Bartonella is very common in cats .A bite or scratch could infect someone with bartonella. There was a scientific study (linked on another Lyme site) aimed at vets who are at high risk from infection from cat bites. My cat has never bitten or scratched anyone, he's very sweet and friendly. Make sure kids do not try to pick up or pet stray cats. I think it's best to keep pet cats indoors where ticks are common. [ ] Re: Ticks Most animals are hosts for ticks now. It's not just the deer that are carrying them. My cats have brought the ticks into my house. I've found them around their mouths. They are big into catching mice/moles and birds. I've heard that raccoons, skunks, squirrels, birds, mice, etc. can now carry ticks. They feed on just about any animal they can hitch hike on to. Not all ticks carry Lyme/co-infections, but I got bit by a few and one of them was the one I got infected by. I believe it was brought into the house by my cats. I use Frontline, and am thinking of using something else, my cats freak out everytime I put it on them. I'd freak too, it's a dangerous chemical. I wish there was something organic that I could put on them, or feed to them.
