Borrelia has a size of about 0.3 by 20-30 micrometers.

compared to other bacteria it is very thin and very long.

We know that other spirochetes like Treponema (syphilis) can cross mucosa or

slightly damaged skin. Some other Borrelia species (not the ones causing lyme)

are known to cross intact skin. It is often said that Bb infection through skin

is not possible, but I would not be so sure judging from how some of its close

relatives behave.

yes, I think micro-tears is a risk factor.

seems to me the risk of Bb infection by sex is VERY low; otherwise there would

be no discussion about the question if sexual transmission of LD is possible.

Yes this is true. And as my Candida doctor pointed out .. " Candida is not

sexually transmitted persay, but if the person who does not have it already has

a weakend immune system the conditions/terrain make it possible to contract " I

beleive this is true in a lot of these pesky things.

happy to fill in the few blanks between your good points.

BTW, with 'very low risk' I don't mean that people shouldn't be careful. But it

is good to see things in the right perspective. As others have mentioned, other

sexually transmitted diseases are a far bigger risk factor nowadays.

I would just advise the original poster, and anyone else concerned, to not think

of the risk of sexual transmission as low or very low, but to consider sexual

transmission a possibility, period.

As a scientist and high functioning Lyme patient, I remain amazed at the

resiliancy of the bacteria and their ability to show up in any nook and cranny

of my body at any time. So, that's why I err on the conservative and cautious

side...
