It is one of the herbs recommended for treating lyme - maybe someone on the autism-lyme list would know more or has used it? Another question would be whether to use TOA-free or not. Not sure what TOA stands for, but often mentioned as you want brands without it, but then I have read statements that claim that is just not true... there is a big difference in price, with TOA-free ones being lot more expensive. Anecdotal reports suggest that the combination of Noni (the N) and Samento are very powerful against Lyme. Together these two are also active against many pathogenic bacteria - Dr Buttar uses them in conjunction with Cumanda (against candida) to assist with gut pathogens (be they viral, parasitic or bacterial). We have used this CBNS protocol for about 4 months now with no negative effect, steady gains, and a well-balanced gut even during chelation. If you're going to try, I'd advise titring up from one drop, especially if you suspect a high microbal load. I know some who really rate it and a few who couldn't tolerate one drop. I've not tried standard Cats Claw. BTW Nutramedix who make this, Cumanda, Burbur etc seem to have a pretty effective marketing machine. The Nutramedix people claim that this improves the health benefits of their product, but Buhner and most other specialists disagree. I agree with Buhner on this. The theory is that the TOA's work to a degree against the healing properties of the Pentacyclic oxindole alkaloids POA's. I definitely felt a difference between taking regular old cat's claw capsules and the Samento. Saventaro is another brand of cat's claw with the TOA's removed. I found the Modified Cowden Protocol and all the natural protocols much cheaper than the treatments from the allopathic doctors treatments (especially the IV treatment). One exception would be doxycycline which was like water against the lyme. It just upset my stomach and made me get nasty dark spots on my skin when I tried to enjoy the sun. Buhner herbs and similar treatments are never paid for by basic insurance. If you have extended coverage (too expensive for most) the insurance might pay part of the cost. In general ABX is cheaper for the patient (but not for society ...). I have noticed on the Dutch forums that this financial difference is alreay enough for most people to choose ABX instead of herbs. There are similar issues with lymetests, some people only get a standard form the local lab, because they have to pay out of pocket for reliable testing from good labs (PCR/Western Blot); shortsighted but quite common ... We were so ill before getting diagnosed (and young) that our disability money didn't allow us to do anything but conventional abx with just a few herbs and supplements... basically just probiotics and milk thistle. The money just wasn't there. Now that the mostly conventional treatment has allowed my husband to get back to work, we have the money to do other things like herbal protocols. This includes our daughter's treatment which has had to be conventional as well because it was covered by insurance (the prescriptions anyway, not the doc visits which were $$). However, I DO feel that conventional 'cannon' conventional treatment was needed for us at first but being able to add more beneficial stuff to it would have been nice!
