Guest guest
" Another note: if the tick was NOT engorged I think it is unlikely that your son got Borrelia infection from this one, because it requires the tick to be engorged for a least 15 minutes or so (and even after 8-12 hours engorgement the risk of getting Lyme is still relatively low). Some coinfections can be transferred quickly though, and maybe he was infected through another byt that wasn't noticed. " I just want to say that this was not the case with us. My daughter's tick was attached for less than 4 hours and was not engorged, yet here we are........The tick does not need to be engorged nor attached for a certain amount of time prior to exposure. At the most recent ILADs conference, one of the presenters (maybe Horowitz, can't remember) stated that some ticks can transmit a particular Lyme strain within as little as 15 minutes of attachment--pretty scary!--and definitely true in our case, unfortunately! Guest guest
PLEASE, PLEASE see a LYME LITERATE DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY. they will give the correct dosage which is usually HIGHER and for a LONGER DURATION and test for COINFECTIONS. all the alternative books i have read do not dispute the effectiveness of ANTIBIOTICS IN EARLY TREATMENT. this is IMPERATIVE. I see a naturopathic lyme specialist and i am totally alternative thinking but this is not something to mess with. antibiotics DO HAVE A PLACE in medicine, health, and healing and LYME IS THAT PLACE IN THIS SITUATION. i just hope you are not to late. best wishes, danielle On Fri, Oct 22, 2010 at 12:26 PM, skrobison@... < shannontex6@...> wrote: > > > After speaking to our doctor today on the phone (we see an alternative > doctor who is an MD) and explaining what has been going on, he said he wants > our son to go on 30 days of Doxycycline 100 mg (I will know how many times a > day when I pick it up in a little while) alongside the Buhner Protocol. Guest guest
, all i am saying is that he might be going by guidelines that are not what a lyme specialist would go by. if this is not his specialty i am almost sure of this. there is a set of guidelines you can google and print out to get an idea, they should address the dosage for early infection as opposed to late infection, if there is a difference. it is called dr. burrascano's guidelines. maybe that will help. if not you could try calling or having your dr. call a lyme literate dr. to see what their recommendation would be. you can email me privately if you want referral names i can get out my insights into lyme disease book that has interviews with dr.'s here and in europe. best wishes, danielle On Sat, Oct 23, 2010 at 5:09 AM, skrobison@... < shannontex6@...> wrote: > > > le, > > Are you saying that you do not agree with what our doctor prescribed? Guest guest
Great to hear that! Note that Dr Burascono (speeling?) guidelines recommends six week after the appearance the last symptom for early treatment of Acute Lyme. Guest guest
That's part of anti-inflammatory diet and is also just plain good all around anyways. I am glad he is willing to do that. [ ] Re: 15yo son-no antibiotics but on Protocol for 5 weeks need advice/encouragement? Thank you Jeff for you thoughts. Funny you should mention this. I eat a gluten-free, dairy-free, sugar free diet. I told my son yesterday that for at least the next 30 days he needed to eat what I eat (or like I do) and give his body the best shot at healing. He is agreeable and feels best on a gluten-free diet. Thanks again! > > 1. Diet is absolutely key in controlling/minimizing symptoms. This is > your second most powerful tool. Guest guest
To clarify: I meant that the antibiotics should continue for at least 6 weeks past the last appearance of any symptoms. This is no guarantee this won't stop it from going from acute (curable) to chronic (incurable). But it's a good step in the right direction. ph Burrascano's guidelines (http://www.turnthecorner.org/LYMDXRX_2008-October.pdf) [ ] Re: 15yo son-no antibiotics but on Protocol for 5 weeks need advice/encouragement? Guest guest
Hi , I heaved a huge sigh of relief when I read that you were able to get your son started on the doxy right away. Well done! Regarding the dosage. Here is what Dr. Burrascano had to say in his most recent (2008) guidelines: There are four types of antibiotics in general use for Bb treatment. The TETRACYCLINES, including doxycycline and minocycline, are bacteriostatic unless given in high doses. If high blood levels are not attained, treatment failures in early and late disease are common. However, these high doses can be difficult to tolerate. For example, doxycycline can be very effective but only if adequate blood levels are achieved either by high oral doses (300 to 600 mg daily) or by parenteral administration. Kill kinetics indicate that a large spike in blood and tissue levels is more effective than sustained levels, which is why with doxycycline, oral doses of 200 mg bid is more effective than 100 mg qid. Likewise, this is why IV doses of 400 mg once a day is more effective than any oral regimen. He's saying that doxycycline will only limit the growth of bacteria, rather than killing them, unless given in high doses. Also, higher, less frequent dosages are better at killing bacteria than lower, more frequent doses, i.e. 200mg twice daily is more effective than 100mg four times a day. Since doxycycline has a half-life of about 16 hours, I think it should be given at least twice a day, but I'm not a doctor! I would expect 100mg twice daily to be a safe dose for a 140lb. person, having taken 200mg twice daily in the past for a month or more at a time without issues (before Lyme!), but everyone is different. No matter what dosage you decide upon, the doxycycline is merely an interim measure to impede the progression of the infection until you can get your son to an LLMD. I agree with le - he should be seen by someone who has prodigious experience treating acute Lyme and/or coinfections successfully with antibiotics. Until then, if you have not read Dr. Burrascano's guidelines, they're packed with useful information, and the price is right! They can be found here: http://www.ilads.org/lyme_disease/B_guidelines_12_17_08.pdf. Don't forget the probiotics. Dr. Burrascano's guidelines discuss probiotics as well. They should be taken away from the doxycycline, of course. Keep us posted. we're all pulling for him! Jeff From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of skrobison@...
