There are protocols that avoid Jarisch-Herxheimer reactions but they are rare. Most of the effective regimens seem to involves herxes, but they still promote long term healing. If you get sicker and sicker and never better, then something is indeed wrong. But if you take one step back and then 2 steps forward, eventually you'll reach your goal! And I have yet to see a protocol that was 100% effective for everyone.
