I can't drink wine either. This one of the mysteries I had for 2 years until I

got my Lyme & Co diagnosis. I would get the most horrific ab and hip pain and

bloating if I had a glass of wine. My understanding is that alcohol converts

quickly to sugar and feeds the bugs (I also had to treat for candida so maybe

that was part of the mix). I still miss my occasional glass of red wine but am

hopeful that someday I can enjoy happy hour with friends.

anymore. I am wondering however what the effects would be if I was to have 1

glass of wine while on Boulouke, boneset, red root, stephania, knotweed cats

claw and holy basil. Will 1 glass of wine have a devastating effect?

I tried, and at even 1/2 a glass it made me feel terrible. I think

this has a lot to do with being properly hydrated..

i wondered what made me stop being able to drink. i was never much of a drinker

but liked an occasional dinner drink and then i couldn't drink any more without

bell pain and profound muscle weakness. it is nice to know this happens to

lymies. i don't feel so weird anymore.

alcohol has alot of sugar and you are literally feeding the lyme when sugar

is consumed. sorry :(

I don't think the 'sugar' is feeding the bugs. The Lyme bugs are very slow

growing, hard to imagine that they will suddenly thrive on a bit of alcohol.

There are always other 'sugars' that they can use in your tissue and

bloodstream.

But I agree about the effect, I can take about half a glass of wine without

running into trouble nowadays. This is with or without the Buhner herbs (I'm

currently not using any herbs but still quite sensitive to alcohol; same story

when I was using ABX).

My guess is that the liver is working overtime in lymies, or is damaged, so that

it doesn't process the alcohol as in healthy people. Or it could be related to

some hormonal inbalance that is caused by Lyme disease.

I personally don't know the mechanism, but nearly all LLMDs advise avoiding

sugar (fruit, alcohol, refined/white foods, etc.).

Here are some supporting resources (lots of other hits if you search " Lyme " and

" sugar " ):

From the above link - " Adopting a sound nutritional diet without sugar, alcohol

and caffeine is also important. All of those substances cause havoc to a

compromised immune system. Sugar feeds Lyme bacteria and caffeine causes

inflammation. Alcohol contains sugar, depresses the immune system, and inflames

the liver. "

I can't see the credentials of the author but I believe she wrote from

interviews of others. Still, so many agree on this point that it is hard to

believe it is one erroneous source that is being quoted as gospel across the

internet.

I've been alcohol intolerant for years. It makes me immediately light headed and

I just feel terrible. It happens immediately so I don't think its just the

effect of the sugars feeding the bugs although that is also an affect. Just

saying that in my case anyway, there's more to it than that. jo

I drink 1/2 glass of red wine with dinner without any problems. But, I think

everyone is different about alcohol. White wine upsets my stomach while red wine

calms it down. I sometimes have a shot of for the pain instead of a pain

pill.

I used to be able to drink an occasional glass of wine but not any more.

Interestingly, I heard Dr. Cowden speak the other night and someone asked about

marijuana and lyme disease. Marijuana is used by many to help with symptoms and

side effects of many illnesses/treatments. Dr. Cowden said he's never seen any

positive effects of marijuana use with Lyme sufferers. Maybe the liver cannot

detox it?

I can't tolerate Marijuana at all! A friend suggested it since so many people

are helped by it. But not me.

I seem to be able to tolerate 1 glass of wine on occassion but just worry that

it might cause side effects with the herbs.

Had an acid-like trip on green at a time when I wasn't really taking care of

myself or the Lyme.  Truly a near-fatal experience.  Will never do it again,

though the few other times I had tried it without problems was when I was being

really diligent about my treatment regime.

yes, however I don't notice any strange effects from drinking a few glasses of

fruit juice or other stuff that has a lot of sugar. So it must be related to the

alcohol itself, not its 'sugar' content (I guess the 'sugar' is based on the

energy value of the alcohol, as some alcoholic drinks contain very little real

sugar).

I was able to drink alcohol during the first 5 yrs of infection (pre-diagnosis).

However, when my neuro Lyme began to manifest through mood swings and crying

jags (which is how I finally got diagnosed) I could not tolerate alcohol. I

suspect it may have had something to do with alcohol's effect on the brain. I

haven't touch any alcohol in over a year (since beginning antibiotic

treatment--which I stopped 4 months ago. I may have half a glass of wine with

Thanksgiving dinner to see how it feels, but on the whole I think my drinking

(always moderate) days are over.

With the holidays approaching, many of us who are feeling OK may be tempted to

join in a bit of social libations.

I don't think you should worry too much about such side effects; the Buhner

herbs are not like normal (highly concentrated) drugs. If there is any effect,

it is probably from the alcohol itself.

An inability to tolerate alcohol at previous doses is also a side effect of Lyme

itself, so it may not be just the herbs. Again, this is probably pretty variable

from person to person.
