Guest guest
Absolutely YES! I started by taking a bit at bedtime and then again when I woke in the middle of the night. It helped a little within a few days, but what surprised me was that it continued to increase in effect. Within maybe 3 weeks, I was sleeping better than I have for years. Still not what 'normal' people would consider good I suppose, but for someone who has suffered, and I mean suffered, with severely disturbed sleep for the nearly 20 years of illness, its been a godsend. Interestingly, I've tried it before and not gotten as good of results. Perhaps I did not use it long enough???? Or I had other things going on???? Its often hard for us to know why things work or don't work, but after my current success with 5htp, I've been recommending it to anyone with sleep problems. I use it only at night, alhtough serotonin encourages a 'sense of well-being' according tot he experts. My needs are specifically for sleep so I use it as a sleep aid. It undoubtedly helps during the day as well. 5htp converts to serotonin; serotonin converts to melatonin. So you will get both if you supplement with 5htp. If you are low on vitamin b3, it will take more and longer to work. The suggestion I read was to include the b vitamins in your routine. wishing you success, jo > > Hi, all. > Has anyone found success with this? > I tried it once and it didn't work. > Now I am reading that it may take a while to take effect, as in take > it 3 times a day for several days. > So am thinking of giving it another try. > [since I slept zero last night!] > Appreciate hearing anyone's experiences with this. > > thanks, > ellen >

Guest guest
Hi Jo, Yesterday was the first full day I've taken 5 HTP. I took a 100 mg capsule 3 times a day. wow! I woke up once, around 1 am and went back to sleep til 6am. Just as you say, this might not sound like a lot of sleep, but usually if I wake up at 1 am - that's it! I'm up, and I do not nap during the day. Like you say there are many reasons we don't sleep, and it is hard sometimes to tease out what works. I also tried 5 htp before and it didn't work, but I sure am going to give it a long chance. I am impressed. Now I also started yoga yesterday, so that be a contributing factor. But previously, yoga would work, but it would take a while to change my sleeping habits. So I hope this 5 htp is working. I also have found (15 years of extreme insomnia) that an herb or supplement may work for a while, and then no longer work. And after a few months, may work again. So I alternate herbs. And rotate. Something else that has worked for me in the past is the Boiron homeopathic remedies of Quietude and Sedalia. Good luck to you, ellen > > > > Hi, all. > > Has anyone found success with this? > > I tried it once and it didn't work. > > Now I am reading that it may take a while to take effect, as in take > > it 3 times a day for several days. > > So am thinking of giving it another try. > > [since I slept zero last night!] > > Appreciate hearing anyone's experiences with this. > > > > thanks, > > ellen > > >
Guest guest
Robin, The 5-HPT that I take is a powder so measurements are not precise. That's unfortunte but its so much cheaper that way. Anyway, I probably take somewhere between 25 and 50 mg at bedtime and the same in the middle of the night. That is a low dose so I feel safe using it that way. jo > > What quantity of 5-HTP are you taking? Is it in a capsule? Thx - Robin

Guest guest
Thx, Jo - I've been knocking out with 25mg benadryl and it's not working as strongly anymore - I'm ready for the next sleep experiment... - Robin In a message dated 2/21/2009 8:41:16 A.M. Guest guest
Want to report that it is still working. Last night I went to sleep after 11, which is late for me. Even going to sleep that late, I would often wake up at 1 am, and be up for the remainder of the night. Last night I slept thru the nite - maybe woke up once - but didn't really wake til 6 am! A miracle. May it continue to work. Good luck with it robin. ellen > > Thx, Jo - I've been knocking out with 25mg benadryl and it's not working as > strongly anymore - I'm ready for the next sleep experiment... - Robin >
Guest guest
I take 5-HTP but how well it works partly depends on the state of your gut and your body's ability to turn it into tryptophan. I also take tryptophan, which helps, but the most effective sleep aid for me, and I've tried many, has been phosphatydal serine. I use a product called seri-phos which you have to get through a practitioner, and it's amazing. If I wake up too early I take a cap and get a couple more hours of sleep.
